That is my buddy Scott Whitney. He is training for Dakkar. He has a Harley V-Rod engine in it.
I used to race Sidehacks with him in the District 37 GP series and the AMA West coast mx series. He is still working the bugs out of the bike and it is extremely heavy when it is fully loaded, unlike our usual MX sidehacks. Mine is a CR500. Thanks for the intro Dave. Hope you come back soon.
We were entered in V2R but my passenger (coming over from Belgium) canceled at the last minute. I tried to pick up another passenger, but failed given the very short time. I wasn't going to put a rookie on for 500 miles! So, we were a no-show. We did do Parker 250 earlier in the year. That was lots of fun, but a very difficult 5 hours for my passenger.
As Dave said, our ultimate goal is Dakar in January 2005. We have been doing a lot of things to the bike, and testing a lot in preparation. You can see a bunch of cool photos and a wild sand dunes video clip on our web site http://HogWildRacing.com There's nothing like blasting around in the desert on a Harley!
We still need a good sponsor to help get us to Dakar. Our sidecar has huge panel space for large sponsor logos! We get a lot of great Press given that we are doing something so different with a Harley. See our web site for lots of examples of our TV and magazine exposure.

Scott:
The ONE time I make it to The Peak, you weren't there. No chairs. I wanted to see a spirited battle between you and Krohn/Cass.
What sort of fuel load do you envision? That big motor has to be pretty thirsty ...
Why the small front wheel/tire combo? Floatation in dune sand? A REAL LONG shake-down run seems necessary ... the Baja 1000? If I can help in Mexico, lemmee know.

[/ QUOTE ] Bummer, I was planning on V2R on that same weekend till passenger canceled. It was too late to head for Pikes Peak. Sorry we missed you. Krohn/Cass quit coming to Pikes Peak after Pete and I and a Swedish team left them a minute behind. Pete died last year in an auto accident. Now I'm driving, not quite as fast though. Looks like a good year to miss Pikes Peak with the snow and all. Did you freeze your A** off up at Devil's Playground? There is a plan to bring back sidecars to Pikes Peak next year. Possibly more sidecars than ever. Just hope the race survives. I've got cool stories and lots of photos of our Pikes Peak racing on my other site here: Pikes Peak Sidecars (http://www.sidecarcross.com/pikespk/)
Oh, and Monster Garage called me to help build that PP racer for Jessie James. I turned them down. They only pay $500 for the whole week of work, and then they abuse you and make ya look bad on TV. I'm still happy I said no. But it was cool that he made it to the race. That show is supposed to air Aug 2.

[/ QUOTE ] We've got 4 tanks totaling 15.5 gallons for the Dakar setup. The V-Rod is fuel injected, so it's not too bad on gas. There's a "technical" page on HogWildRacing.com that shows ALL the details of the bike.

Why the small front wheel/tire combo? Floatation in dune sand?
[/ QUOTE ] Yes. The sand dunes are the death of all sidecars in the Dakar. If we can't go well in the sand, we won't go to Dakar. Fortunately, so far so good in the sand! Also, the tires are super heavy duty Rally car type with double beadlocks so we won't get many flats, and can run flat for a while when needed. All 3 wheels are interchangeable so we can move a flat to the side in a bind. This whole sidecar was specifically designed for Dakar starting from the first tube bend.

A REAL LONG shake-down run seems necessary ... the Baja 1000? If I can help in Mexico, lemmee know.
[/ QUOTE ] The V2R race was sorta supposed to accomplish that. My passenger really messed up my plans. We'll get in more testing over the next 5 months. I'm not sure a race is really the best shakedown. The conditions in these local desert races are really not at all the same as what's in the Dakar. They don't have hundreds of miles of big whoops over there. You're right though, we do need to beat the hell out of this thing before we go to Dakar.
For now I have to concentrate on finding a big sponsor. If something doesn't come through, we'll have to stay at home. I need all the help I can get in finding a sponsor! Worldwide TV ! ! ! And you KNOW a Harley in the desert is gonna attract a lot of press! It's a great opportunity for someone who wants their logo seen around the world. Check out the Press (http://www.hogwildracing.com/press_clippings/) page on our web site. We've already started a buzz in the media.
Tony, that photo you attached is quite an oldie, 1976? If so, I was there too.
