View Full Version : the end of SCORE off road race in the US

After Laughlin ....that's it.
for us that don't race TT or class one, all we have left is the super expensive Mexico races.
In my case, the Blazer is too heavy for stadium races, even just to spectate in the Vegas SCORE stadium race is 39$ a piece.......
The typical off road racer brings the family....friends and tells tons of people about it and they do show up to see either contingency or at least the start. They are used to get there and have fun....for free.....
That will be no more, just like I saw drag racing go away from the rank and file, circle racing followed and they became a money pit... and stadium racing will be that way also.
What can we do?
Barstow?
Snore and More?
But the courses are always the same and so tore up!!!
Sadly the little people loose again!!!!
To all the guys that raced SCORE and are not able or invited to run the Stadium race (s)..
reply with your opinion, don't be afraid to voice it...I'll take the blame, I am not afraid to step on toes, I never kissed any ones butt and I wont start now.
I just hate to see my grand son not to be able to experience the fun and excitement of flying through the desert, jumping the Laughlin leap, getting snowed on at parker, boiling at the 122* Henderson race, and just being part of a terrific bunch of people.
At least us older guys have memories...

You bring up some interesting points.Racing in general has never been cheap. As far as spectating goes, Mexico is still a blast and can be done for cheap. And I think most will say that the good old days are gone.It will be very intersting to see where the sport goes in the next decade.

Jim, its not over yet. I know you've always been a patron of SCORE but lets not forget that BITD and SNORE exist as well as the local MDR and MORE races. I can understand you not wanting to run the blazer in short course or stadium since it is a bonafide desert truck but then again, with the talent in your camp, I'm sure you guys could throw together a short course/stadium truck if you wanted to and I have no doubt that you could figure out how to get a lot of power out of a pinto motor. You're right, it could get crazy if factories get involved again but it might be a damn good run until they finally stick their nose in it....and....if it does take off like a rocket, like any other form of motorsports, the sponsors that want to get in will be looking for a team to fund.
It may be the end of an era for you in terms of racing SCORE but it certainly does not have to be the end of your family's involvement in off-road racing.

Jim,
CODE might be your answer... look at the entry lists for class8 and 18(8 sportsman). The two big guys in 8 are the PIN team from Tecate and Cancholas from MXL. next race is the December race ENS to SF. Its a combined race with Ensenadas promoter Record....should make for some extra entries.

we will run snore and more and if we are legal for BITD, we changed our width to 80 " so we should be ok there.
I for sure wont quit till i am ready for the course up in the sky, or if I hang out with Klaus...down where the drinking champs go ......I have been wanting to race CORE, may do that after Laughlin

Jim, I understand your concerns.
I will attend the LV Speedway race and I'll gladly buy tickets for my family. I do not expect the ticket price to be $39. Personaly, I don't think Sal will present such a hig ticket price. Please, correct me and point me to your basis for that if I am wrong.
Furthermore, I hope that SCORE allows for varying types of spectator access that is popular at Crandon. Overnight camping and all.
As for being on tired old race courses. Yes, I understand how bad the courses are in SoCal. On the flip side, here in Nevada, BITD and SNORE hold races on a wide range of race course routes all year long. As Kenny Freeman has said, the Caliente race is through spectacular country. The BITD McMillin - Nevada 1000 promises a whole lot more of the same. Come on up and partake!

Pat, i forwarded to you the score news letter, for others that may not have heard about it or read it, i'll paste part of it.
The early-bird sale is for the SCORE Super Pass packages in the two reserved-seat sections at LVMS, not single-day reserved-seat or single or two-day general admission tickets.
Special SCORE Super Pass packages, including a reserved seat and pit pass for both nights in the Blue VIP Section will be $39 each. The SCORE Super Pass package for the Red Section will include a reserved seat and pit pass for both nights in the Red Section, will be $34 each. The regular price for each of these packages is $69 for the Blue VIP reserved seating area and $59 for the White reserved seating area.
Starting January 1, 2005, General Admission tickets will go on sale along with any remaining SCORE Super Pass tickets at the regular prices.
thats what i was referring to...four in the family at $34 each member? 136 bucks....

Jim, how are the tire tests going? The blazer ready to race again? Here is a link to the new section for the "official" press release we posted.

Jim,
The COCE races are a lot of fun, good turnout of class 8, courses well marked,
and Alfonso is a fair straight shooter. Let us know if you plan to make a race
and I'd like to help you with pit and chasing. The CODE series has a mix of tracks.
The Laguna Salida tracks are just outside Mexicali and offer classic Baja open desert
racing - great tracks, not too tore up - just like the old days in Baja. The San Felipe
race runs two laps of the SCORE north loop and is tore up with huge whoops but still
fun since it's San Felipe after all. The Jacume race is a 15-20 mile shorter course
loop race on terrain that is like a rally race for most of the lap. Very fun track!
Then the season ender is a great point to point race from Ensenada to San Felipe,
a 400+ miler. Code Baja races rock, come on down! Leave the BS at home.

Jim the Sky is not falling! Score is adding an event as a non points deal and until it goes down lets reserve our opinions. Sal has been promoting races for over 30 years and I will support his event and be glad to put down my $39 bucks. The Baja 1000 is going down in a few weeks with record numbers, entries seem to be up at all the races and I feel with Dust to Glory and the NBC TV deal it will only get better. As in the late 80s we may get some of the spotlight and loosen up some corporate wallets. Outside money in our sport will only help fuel the passion and progress our sport to the next level. If having to run on some short tracks to build a TV following will help pay for my desert racing addiction I am all for it. I am Glad to see Score promoting new events and thinking outside the box. Good luck Score, Trophy Truck #7 will be in Las Vegas next July.

Hold on a second.... No more SCORE desert racing in the US after '05??? Did I read that right, or is that just refering to the Patelli team? I remember seeing Mark Weyhrich's post a while ago about the Primm and Laughlin races, the land that is being raced on is being bought? Is this true? Is that the reason why? And if so, why doesn't SCORE find other places to run, there are still tons of places all over California (that aren't Barstow), Nevada, and Arizona. What is the deal and when was this announced that this is the end of it?

Chris...
thats my kind of racing!!!!!
after we get the tire tests done we would like to run a race before the Laughlin event, maybe that would be the place to run..
Thanks for the help offer.....your on.

Score has there schedule up for next year which includes Primm. Airport or not they always have the other side of Interstate 15 to run on if need be, they have done this in the past. Score will continue to put events on in the USA and Mexico. Again the SKY IS NOT FALLING!

Scott, I agree about Sal helping off road racing....
Laughlin will have a big concrete slab poured where the starting line was.....Primm an airport built there, if they can race on the other side of 15 like in the passed days it would be a blast. What really got to me is that the Sierra club and similar associations would take the BLM to court if anyone even stepped on the desert besides the allowed stamp sized areas.
Why aren't they sewing to keep the airport or the casinos away from their precious grounds?
Sal and BLM are not to blame, its the do-gooders that go against the small fry but scared to battle big money (or are they getting their share?) that are to blame.
And I may be all wrong, done that before!!!!

Jim the cost of a ticket is about the same as the $25 i paid at riverside in 1988 if you take in inflation. i would rather race desert but riverside was a fun time. i think that score is missing the boat by not having all classes racing at this event. as everyone knows a tt will not be that good of a show on a tight track, but a class 10, 12 or 1600 will be a good tight race. Scott as you know the primm track that we all know will be gone after Aug. 1 2005 because of the new airport, making the buffalo bills 500 the last primm race. the west side of I-15 is a turtle reserve and racing could happen but the blm will make it tough on the promoter. snore was going to race there in 2002 and the blm wanted $20,000 extra to protect to turtles

marc knowing that the primm airport was going to happen snore tried to find another way to get under the union pacific railroad. in 1987 snore ran just south of the state line border and crossed there. this rout was used many times from 1970 to 1987 then the California desert protection act stopped it. in 2001 snore got permission to run on the railroad right of way and cross under south of primm in California. the Nevada blm said that it was OK with them because it was on private land. the California blm came out to look at the track and said that the railroad had never had a section 7 tortoise survey and would sue is the race was held. the Nevada blm made snore change the track 2 days before the race. the problem is the airport land runs just south of Jean from I-15 to the railroad tracks and to primm so getting to the other side of the railroad tracks will take some doing like someone like a senator or president getting the cal blm to let the track run 1.5 miles into the state. chances of this happening are slim to none from the 2 losers that Californians elected to the senate

actually the question is what is going to happen to all of the
toirtuses and other animals that were in danger when we raced there but now are going to be cemented over .........
Am i too obtuse to understand the ways that the BLM and the enviromentalist minds work?
It does not make too much sense to me......

John, we will be tire testing after we get back from the SEMA show.
Bring a couple Race dezert logos to the SEMA
in case I see you there and I'll put them on the Blazer during the test
as the guy doing the write up is going to take photos.
Also I'll let you know of the date so that if you have time you can meet us there,
Joe will take you for a ride as they test.
Maybe you can give your opinion on the different tires and their attributes.

What funny about the tortises is off roaders are not the ones killing them like the Blm thought. It actually the Ravens but they don't want us to know.Just like that plant that was ordered to be demolished in the early 1900's that closed half of Glamis.

Speaking of tortises, they just had an article here in the san Bernardino paper about the fires last year, in it they spoke of a family that lost everything, except for the DESERT TORTISES, they had in a pen outside their home.

Marc, there is a lot of land but nothing that creates a "venue atmosphere" that SCORE requires.
I kinda wonder about this because back in the MInt 400 days it was a long ways from downtown to the race course. Of course now there are homes built on areas that were race course.

It would be nice if the BLM would open up some land for us to be able to use after they close down the Primm area. To replace the land that will be not available. As far as Score goes, I think they have slowley been backing away from events in the US. The Fireworks 250, Great Mojave 250, Parker 400 come to mind that Score has given up.
racer951
October 31st, 2004, 20:50
It has been said the Fireworks decision was strictly financial, and as for Parker, it was a land use issue, permits or something of the sort (maybe more $ as well). Whiplash worked for that race and got it, now as everyone knows BITD had it. I think I'm too young because I have never heard of the Great Mojave 250.

I am not 100 percent sure but I think it had to do with the lack of amenities in the area.Like hotels and stuff.Somebody correct me if I am wrong.... Contingency was near the Chamber of Commerce. It was a really cool event. I loved that race.

i find it amazing how all the tree huggers demonize the off roaders, you know cuz we tear up the land, purposely run over bugs and lizards. Yet its fine to build a FRICKN AIRPORT OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!
yea a year round airport is MUCH better for the envirenment than running a few races a year.
that's it, stop the planet, i want off.
