What if our goverment disables the GPS system last minute during the Baja 1000 race this year and you would actualy race it like they did circa 1990?
Now it comes down to who knows his way around. What do you rememeber from your prerun. Who actualy pays attention to the coursemarkers.
Who would be your pick for the overall now assuming there is no GPS and we only find out right at the start of the event?

With all the prerunning Scott does to plot the course I would say #7.

Agreed with Jason, Scott, or Rick Johnson who preruns alot down there. The McMillins are also very Baja knowledgeable. I wouldn't discount the locals, Vidisola, Salazar, Yee, etc.

What about the guys in the single seat cars.
Guys like Chuck Hovey, Jeff Darland, etc.
They have no time to look at a GPS screen.

Dan Smith and Dave Ashley definately know their way around down there, now if they could just get the tranny to stay together.......

not to take anything away from anyone else in single seater but I know Chuck remembers a lot of info from pre-running coarses. When we campaigned the Aceco 2-seater his co-rider was Trey S. a lot of the time, would tell me Chuck would call stuff out before they'd get to it, having pre-ran a week 10 days before. Now being a single seater he has NO time to look at the GPS but it's there if he needs it. Guys an animal, will be driving the entire distance solo......again.

SO if you had to pick what kind of animal he is, what would it be. I am doing a study for a Baja 1000 thesis.

It would be Dan Smith and Dave Ashley. They have NEVER, EVER, used a GPS in their race cars in the entire history of Enduro Racing. They also have never pre-ran a course with a GPS. They were once sponsored by Lowrance but only the chase trucks used the GPS's. For as many wins that they have had over the years they have all been done without a GPS.

I'd put $ on L.R in the Herbst Truggy also, with either McMillin or Ragland on his arse.

Steve Scaroni is my bet. He could drive the course blind folded. Has an amzing memory of baja.

Any of the bike guys. JC, LR Darland etc....... Even with the GPS systems there is no substitute for knowledge and using GPS just enhances it. By the way, anyone using the GPS tracking system so us that cant go keep track? Kinda like what Steve Sourapas had a few years ago. That was really cool being able to see their progress real time.

What's an Aceco?
desertracer
November 7th, 2004, 11:50
The Aceco I believe they are refering to is a buggy chassis maker. Same idea as saying a penhal, jimco, or porter to describe an open wheel buggy. I remember somebody in motion tire used to have have an a-arm aceco in the that was run in MDR and still makes some appearences. Heres a random info I found Aceco (http://www.racerimports.com.au/aceco_race_cars.htm)

Mark McMillin no doubt would win it he's won the penninsula run many of times. he also knows a bunch of access roads he even remembers what routes the baja 1000 ran way back in the day, and hes been racing for a long arse time
Brian Mapes
November 7th, 2004, 22:04
I would have to say Johnny Campbell but in a truck I would say probably Steinberger because like others have said, all that prerunning he does for programming the gps has got to be stuck in his head.

Without a GPS?
If we couldnt use GPS the race would be won by somebody "Old School"
Mark McMillin and Larry Ragland are the guys who have won the most races back in day and at the present time. Both of them are entered in this years Baja 1000 and both of them are tied for most overall wins in the Baja 1000 at 7 each.

Doug Fortin Jr???? i could name atleast once when he got lost and remember it goes all the way down not an 800 mile loop. @ the '98 Baja 1000 down around San Javier Fortin went by our pit and then about an hour later he came back up the course lost and pulled into our pit were he waited about an hour and a half for his dad to show up to fix his car and get him going ....
....so yes i would have to agree with SMD and go with McMillin's
racer_dude
November 9th, 2004, 11:46
mark miller can get it done with no gps he pre-runs on a huge ktm bike...
scott is a good pick also
rick l. johnson knows his way around too and has dane cardone and tony vanillo splitting up the long haul and have done their sections twice now...
then there is my mom.... she is a human gps, she can get you where ever you need to go in baja, good food and 24 hour pemex stations that have diesel down the penninsula all at the same time while making lunch

First of all, a GPS does not win races. It is merely another tool in your toolbox. Anybody that drives by the GPS will get bit. You should only drive what you see. Whether or not you are in the dust. The GPS definitely helps with surprises, (dangers, degree of turns, etc) but it will not mark the cow, the fallen tree, the thirty drunken Mexicans, the washout from yesterdays rain, or the stuck vehicle around the next bend.
So now if we are comparing who is the most familiar with the trails in Baja, I am putting my vote with Larry Ragland. He is a master of all things Baja!

No one has mentiioned Ted Hunnicutt, Many Baja, district and other wins on a bike sans GPS, and first off the line has to be of some advantage. Mat not be first but, could be in the hunt? I may be bias, I have known Ted ( aka nosebleed) for many years and I am rooting for him.

The Sky will not fall, The GPS will work at the Baja 1000, and I have a $100 bucks says the winner 4 wheel will have a PCI Hi Def GPS guiding them on to victory! If the fog hits like 2002 you will flat be lost without it! Good Luck in Baja!
