F350 PSD lift vs towing?

Asking for a friend,

He has a 2004 F350 PSD long bed and wants to lift it as high as he can with the largest tire BUT he wants to retain as much towing capablity of a stock truck. What is the happy number?

Seriously though, I don't know what the "magic number" is, but I wouldn't go that high.

hell, those RBP guys have their stupid duties lifted like 4 feet, on 44's with like 25" drop hitches with heimed triangulation bars and they tow 30+ ft. cigarette boats.

no offense but your question is kind of an oxy-moron... no lifted trucks tow as good as a stock truck does. like helton said there are guys with 44's towing big toy haulers/boats/rails everywhere but there is no way they tow as good as stock. if he is going to lift it and want to tow big stuff i wouldn't go any more than 8 inches.

As PBR said, any lift /bigger tire will hurt the towing capability. we used to have 285 tires on ours but it hurt the towing enough we went back to 265's! it's all a matter of what you're willing to sacrifice, towing 15,000 lbs 1000 miles at a time we weren't willing to sacrifice at all!

towing resonable (<10k) trailers mostly local should be no problem with up to 35's and a 6-8 inch lift.

and just to add to the thread..... if he was interested in towing a fifth wheel.... you wouldn't want to lift more than 4" (although I know some people are doing it with a 6"... but their trailers are raked).

Ya, if its a 5th wheel, dont lift it much. But if you are using a regular class III, My buddie's is lifted 8" with 38's, It tows his toy hauler great. any higher than that is just stupid.

We put about 3" of lift on our '99 F350 with Alcan springs all around and 295/75 BFG's and it tows pretty nice and isn't too bad to work with loading, unloading, hauling the gooseneck, etc. We went lighter on the rear springs and added airbags because we wanted a bit more wheel travel and a softer ride for rougher roads. It's running RS9000's now but may end up with procomp Mx6's or some bilsteins.
We also moved the front swaybar up an inch or a bitmore to keep it out of the rocks at the same time, so if you're after more off road ability, that's an easy fix that helps keep one more part from being bashed.
Just one combination that works for towing relatively large loads long distances. The total GVW is usually around 20K# which isn't a huge load these days but is respectable.
