I was looking into doing some Hair and hound or dezert races ( I have a strong mx background and some Dez truck exper. but none on bikes) What do you guys do to keep a little two stroke alive in the Dez? Run um rich? Gear them up tall? How big a tank? I run a 250 for my moto bike but came across a new 125 at a super deal and think it would be fun to run it, and leave my 250 alone for the track.

there is nothing wrong with a one duce five in the dez... get a nice 3 gallon tank or so get a nice gear 14-47 or 48 and dont worry about the rich part just be easy on it on the long long wide open straights...

me and 5 others made a 125 last 24 hours at the 24 hours of glen helen first ever to make it past 10 hours on one (two years ago)

The buck, deuce, and a quarter can be very competitive in the desert. The 2004 1c(#1 125 racer) is in my club and he would place top 10, very often and top 20 in the nationals...hes on a 250 this year.

Its not the bike, its the rider. In most D37 races a 125 has an advantage for half the course but a disadvantage on hill climbs and valleys. Tight and technical a 125 can smoke the big bikes since its light and peppy.

Get a tank and some skid plates. Regear it and race it dont believe the hype that 125s arent competitive! Unless you weigh too much for the bike you should be able to hang with the best of them.

I'm gonna ironman a CRF250 this sunday at the Glen Helen 6 hour. It's one of our ooooollllldddddd test bikes that's got a lot of time on it. I checked the valves and they were perfect....I'm hoping I can burn it up so I don't have to do the whole six hours!! ;)

Thanks for the replys. I been trail ridding it a few times and have no problems hanging with the herd or 450's ( they just eat me up on the long smooth fast stuff) need a little gearing. I did 35+ miles ( almost out of gas) and wasn't even tired. My old 426 would have had my arms in a knot. It feels like Im on my Mountainbike. Im 185 in street clothes so Im sure im pushing the weight a bit. My only other concern it the 19 in the rear. what do you think, run it till its square, then go with a 18?

Great question, I was wondering the same thing (125 good for dez racing). I guess Im ditching my blue forked 250 for a new(er) 1/8th liter within the next couple of months.

I believe it was Duane Summers and John Rudder took 3 or 4th overall bike at the 1986 B1k. Was on a Cagiva. Those guys were awesome on 125`s. I may be wrong on the year but it was back than sometime.

First off racing desert is a great way to spend a weekend and the best bang for your buck. I have seen 125s over all a desert race. I would recomend a steering damper (Scotts) and a good skid plate. I have a friend that races MX and holds a pro card, he was held up at sign ups because the lady didnt understand the procard/expert thing, after finally getting signed up he made it to the start line about 30 seconds after they left. He took off way dead last and at the pits, 32 miles into it he was in the top 10 with TWO flat tires. He quit at the pits to save the equipment. Have a great time and check out the district 37 web site.
