View Full Version : Supecrew frames... 2WD vs. 4WD?

What's the difference?

Bottom line: I'm building a 2wd supercrew, but have found a 4wd supercrew roller for a good price. I'm going to be replacing ALL the stock suspension with aftermarket stuff, the only thing I require is a frame and cab, as well as the brackets for mounting the aftermarket front control arms (2wd). My question is, what are the differences (if any) between the 2wd and 4wd frames? I realize there will be some "extra" stuff on the 4wd frame (torsion bar brackets, for example), but I need to know the other differences, particularly if the front control arms, mount similarly to the frame on the 2wd and 4wd models. Older Chevy trucks, for example, utilized the same frame with different tabs on the front. In an afternoon you could switch the spring tabs, control arm brackets, crossmember, etc, and build a 2wd out of a 4wd frame (or vice-a-vers-a). Any body know if the F150 Supercrew frames are similar? Is it more work than it's worth?

THANX!!!!

The 2wd and 4wd frames are completely different from each other. From the firewall back they are the same. There is no way to adapt 2wd parts to a 4wd frame. Different mounting widths/heights/offsets/etc... Build a 4wd!!!

The stock 4X4 system is good, depending on how much hp you are going to put in it. But you just need to get some longer CV's made........assuming you are going to put a longtravel kit on the front..........

Go 4x4, you never have to worry about being stuck, and you always have a second drive axle to fall back on..............a definite plus anywhere.

ShrekNot to mention the far superior handling IMHO.

I just checked out the Dixon Bro's website. They produce a "14 travel 4WD front end, but I was hoping for more. Is that the realistic limit for a 4wd front end? Any other guys out there building a semi "production" front end?

i second that (r gordon red bull) !!!! and better yet they use there stuff and test it in the desert on a regular basis. 14" of good tuned travel will do more then you think. dont be fouled by big travel #'s. untill you move the pivot point inward your only going to get so much travel with out making you truck 10ft wide. good luck with your build!!
