Steve,
Been using Tivo since they first came out.

Could talk your ear off on them.

My 2 cents in a nutshell:
1. DirecTV is phasing out Tivo and using their own boxes.
2. The combo units (DirecTV/TiVo DVR's) allow you to record 2 shows at once with 2 feeds while the stand-alone units do not.
3. The stand alone units allow: Multi-room viewing (DirecTivo units can if you hack them), picture & music sharing from a server, extraction to a PC for remote viewing or DVD and a few other things.
4. Standalone units from Tivo are a pain because channel switching is slow.
5. If you want a DVR for high def Tivo is the only option for DTV.

So....
I have mostly DirecTivo units but have one standalone Tivo that has a DVD burner on it that I use.

If you want more info I can give you a call.

We got our DTV with Tivo in the same box for $50 installed and only costs I think $5 a month for the service, close to that but alot cheaper than the normal Tivo box and service. Only draw back so far is the amount you can store on the all in one $50 box is about 1/2 of what the more expensive models are.
