I feel in love right away with a whole different aspect of racing that I was not familiar with on TV. I then started my quest to build a budget prerunner, after starting and selling a couple of different vehicles(one more extreme then the following) I came upon the blazer and fell in love with it. Well like any project I took it in for a rollcage and we ended up cutting the whole thing up, built a few things and rebuilt them again. The fabrication completion date should be around January 31, 2006. Then it will be off to dash, wiring and plumbing. I will be doing a lot of the finishing work myself with the help of friends in the industry. The goal of my prerunner will be to prerun the bigger SCORE & BITD races and some chasing at select races. </span></font></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="50%"> </td> <td width="50%"> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="100%" align="right" colspan="2"> <div align="center"> <center> <table border="0" cellpadding="2" style="border-collapse: collapse" bordercolor="#111111" width="80%"> <tr> <td colspan="2"> <p align="center"><b>Project Subsections:</b></td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2">- <a href="http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16296"> Vehicle Specs</a></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2">- Dash - Custom Aluminum Dash being built</td> </tr> <tr> <td>- Steering - HOWE shows me how to setup a steering box with internal stops.</td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>- Wiring - Wiring a prerunner from scratch</td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>- Plumbing - Plumbing a vehicle from scratch (brakes, fuel, cooling and steering) </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </center> </div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="50%"> </td> <td width="50%"> </td> </tr> </table> </center> </div>

Love that blazer. I have a set of factory slider side windows with the deflectors if you are interested John. What color will it be? :)
John_Bitting
December 17th, 2005, 13:09
I am not sure what color. I thought about going all crazy with several RDC colors(red, black, grey, white) but then like the look of just white. We will just have to wait and see.
I dont know about those windows, seems like more to go wrong.. We can chat pm about them.

Was the Blazer a 2WD or 4WD model originally?
John_Bitting
December 26th, 2005, 17:13
The blazer was originally a 2wd. When I sold the long travel kit that was on it when I bought it, I just gave the new owner the whole crossmember with everything still mounted on it.

Yes it was Aarons. I wanted it from the very first time I saw it and after a couple of years he finally sold it to me. Then I took it into get a cage and SNOWBALL.. 2.5 years later only the shell and doors are left.

I saw that you will be running the howe GM box with their pump and ram. I have a chassis setup simular to yours and am using a GM steering box. Are there anymore detailed pics of your steering setup somewhere? Or will there be more when you do the steering writeup? Thanks~Erik S

I am currently working on the steering setup as I type this. We have marked the box, set the alignment, finished the pitman arm and now it will go to HOWE for internal stops. I will find pics of the steering during mockup. The only thing you cant see is the ram mounted under the oil pan.
**disclaimer, this was only mockup to determine location of everything**

Here is a copy of the drawing that was sent to Elite Laser Cutting for the steering. It will give you a better idea of what is going on. The box is off the front and the pitman arm parralells the front slider piece.

Looks great John, may I ask why you did not try mounting a power rack? I know the engine is kind of in the way but it seems a rack has less moving parts & could be mounted backwards with a gearbox. After visualizing what I just said, the way you are doing it is probably much better looking and we all know it works! I think I might have answered my own question.
John_Bitting
February 2nd, 2006, 00:02
Exactly as you said. The rack was too tall to fit once we mounted everything(rack was an after thought) I had already purchased the box, pump, ram etc. So with that in mind, Nate fabricated the slider system. When all is said and done its about the same price as running the big Howe Truggy rack so I am alright with my decision.

Sounds like a good plan. I cant say that I have ever seen a blazer as well thought out as yours. I guess you have had some time to ponder! Here are a couple of pics to hold you guys over while I write the steering article. Steering is all done now, the box will get internal stops next, I am dropping the box off at Howe this week, and the front bypass shocks will go back to FOX to get clocked. Enjoy
The side skirts will be started hopefully in the next week or so.
Very little fab left, mounting hood, fuel cell and patch up rear floor, mount steering pump and other accessories. Then should go get dash then wiring and plumbing. No date set for anything after fab, it will be as budget allows.
Can you tell the wheelbase has been stretched just a tad?? ha ha Stock wheelbase is 106.5, mine is 110.

John, make sure you put the u-joint in the center of the two 3/8 bolts on the tilt column. Since Kar-tek started selling them I have noticed that numerous people have not done this. If it is not in the middle, the shaft will grow and shrink as you use the tilt. We asked Kar-tek to start telling people how to install it after we saw a few done wrong. Keep up the good work.

Hey Klaus
I like that front light setup. Those 6incher might be small. Are you planning on doing a light bar up top? I like the idea of a removable front light bar. Do the HID ballist boxes stay on blazer? Looks nice even for a chevy, ha ha. Just kidding.
My Bronco Project is coming along. We finished the inside tear out, but the dash is next. I have a ways to go still.
John_Bitting
April 27th, 2006, 13:58
I will eventually build a light bar on top but for now the 4 up front should be enough for what I will be doing with the blazer. As far as the ballasts, the new Vision X lights have internal ballasts so I did not to worry about trying to mount anything external.

I chose Ronnie at Source Prep Fab(SPF) to plumb the blazer and I cant be happier with his work. Its turning out way better then I imagined. He had the whole thing laid out before he even purchased the first fitting(so much money for fittings DAMN). I am going to take some pics on Tuesday night when I am back down there. I am working on one small issue. The TT power steering pump I bought is too big for my application so mounting it is giving us problems plus I found out I dont need such a big pump for the small throw on the ram I am running. I will let you know what I figure out this week, I think I will be downgrading to the smaller pump.
Also the Exhaust is 50% done(driver side), Adam Diaz from this board is doing it for me as a favor/sidejob. All stainless with magnaflow mufflers. I will post pics of that also.

Most of the road race stuff I've worked on had tubing everywhere flex wasn't needed. In a crunch once we temporaily plumbed one IMSA car's brakes all in SS hose. Did the whole job in about an hour & a half. The driver commented that he couldn't tell the difference in pedal feel. So it stayed that way for the whole championship winning season.

Nope, its a long term project and there is no end in site. As with every build I took it in to get a rollcage and came out with this so far, everyone that has worked on it has done amazing work and the day it does hit the dirt, all of the waiting will have been worth it. Jonny does great work, really happy with the way my car turned out. Took 3 days from start to finish.
Little peek.
Jack does great work too, he's outta Vegas now though.

All sorts of little stuff can be added. Dome lights, turn signals, wipers, race radios, intercoms, sat radio, sat phone, heater/AC, electric cooler, GPS and a lot of other little stuff you wouldn't believe. Sometimes the nicknacks take longer to hook up then the stuff to make it go.

Made an appt with Ronnie at SPF to do all the finishing work, bolts, belts, oil, rear end assembly, etc in two weeks so it will go from him to wiring and be running.. Could it be

Nope, its a long term project and there is no end in site. As with every build I took it in to get a rollcage and came out with this so far, everyone that has worked on it has done amazing work and the day it does hit the dirt, all of the waiting will have been worth it. Also, I would rather do it right the first time by using the right people rather then finishing it fast for cheap.
Amen. :)

Just got the blazer back from E&J Wireworks in Poway and super stoked on the work and the fact the blazer is that much closer. Monday it returns to Ronnie Imhoff at Source Prep Fab (SPF) for fluids and final prep and she will live and breath. Here are some wiring pics I took today and I powdercoated the aluminum dash Marty at MME built me a flat texture black.

I dont need a clip, I am just gonna sit on it the whole time so its nice and close? Whats a stuck mic?? ha ha The clip will be mounted.
It will be done for Terribles Cup but I am not bringing it out there. I wanted to prerun Vegas to Reno but dont know if I will have enough test time before then. Maybe Night race to shake it down prerunning and then primm prerun.

The blazer is closer then its ever been, all I need to do is install the distributor and limit straps then I can test, everything else is complete. Here are a couple of pics I took after it came back to my shop. Nate at Blitzkrieg built me new uprights and Ronnie got those on. The only thing left on the outside is to pick up the bedsides, mount them and build skirts for the hood to match my doors. Then its test test test, then paint and interior. The seats currently in it will be replaced after they are sold.

But wait a minute, it's been a few weeks and no one put that distributor in for you yet? What an appreciative group we have here...
It takes anywhere between 10 seconds to around 5 minutes, to put in rough time and a few more with a timing light to finish it up. I can walk you through it, if need be.

cool, i bet you just can't wait. where are you going testing first?
for the inside you should check out "lizard skin". i sprayed the inside of my cab and that’s it. they have 2 types, one just for sound and one that’s for both sound and heat. i just did the combo but, if i were to do it again i would do the sound first then the heat (as they recommend). I could lend you the gun.

The good news is, SHE IS ALIVE and running amazing.
The bad news, the main seal is puking oil so the motor has to be pulled. I am super sad I wanted to test this weekend. I guess that happens with a motor sits in a project vehicle for 4 years.

that's a major bummer...will the truck make it out to primm???
John_Bitting
August 21st, 2007, 13:19
It wont make Primm. The seal has not leaked again after we ran it that night, so either the oil level is so low its not leaking or once the thing ran it sealed itself up. I did buy a new seal in the event I need to change it. I have not gotten a chance to test yet. I need to mount my new seats and the bedsides. Its close but I have been busy with family stuff so I have not touched it in two weeks. Its super close I could test this week but time is not on my side. I will shoot video and take pics when we do finally test so all will know. Then I will have to take PCIs GPS class so I know how to use this thing I bought from them.

Well with any project changes are made all the time. I actually gave it to a buddy to help me finish up some little things on it. I bought new seats so he is changing the mounts for me. It will go to paint this Friday and be there until the expo. I have not tested in the dirt yet as the painter was not happy with me wanting to bring it to him filthy. We are undercoating the belly of it so its just smarter to stay out of the dirt until after the expo. I am looking forward to finally getting it in the dirt, its been a long time and I cant wait to see how she does. It sounds mean as hell though running.

A huge thank you goes out to Keith and Tony Sato for taking time out of their own projects to help finish mine up so I can enjoy it. Keith and Tony are probably some of the most under rated fabbers/mechanics involved with our sport. Seats are mounted up, I bought some Sparcos after reading all of the threads from UPR in AZ whom is also one of our advertisers, it made a ton more room for the third person and my seat is back about 3 more inches so I can stretch out, the bedsides are finally all mounted and look good. It goes to paint on Monday where my longtime friend and class 8 racer(Toyota Tundra) Cory Susag will get this bad boy ready for the expo. The only thing it wont have at the expo are the mini fenders for the front clip. Those still need to be made as the budget has runneth over and I dont need them to drive it.
