I sold the race truck toward the end of 2002 and decided to put the money into a prerunner that I have wanted to build for a long time. I decided on a Toyota T100 and found one in December of 2002. Build a 4-link rear suspension and a custom a-arm design for the front. A couple of advantages I had was this isn't a race truck and not my daily driver. So I could take my time to build it right.</font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Next I needed to figure out what parts, materials and additional tools I had to buy to get started. We already had a JD squared tubing bender. I bought a cheap $40 tube notcher from Harbor Freight. I paid about $1600 for DOM, 4130 tubing and also 1/8&quot; chromolly plate for the lower 4-link arms. This was over 2 years ago, I know it would cost allot more for the materials now. </font></p> <p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Then I headed up to Camburg where I picked up my shocks, air bumps, uni-balls, heims, ordered my Beard seats and my rear end. I am leaving each subsection open for posting in case anyone has questions that are specific to that part of the build. I will be adding those sections over time.

If anyone has any other questions please feel free to post here.

It is good to see someone giving the T-100 the recognition that it deserves. I myself have a 96 2wd T-100, and have been building it for my desert toy as well. I have installed a LT front end, and glass front and rear, plus some other little things here and there. Keep up the good work brother, and good choice on the right Toyota to build. See you in the desert.

To do this I made the mounts for my lower control arms of the 4-link. Then I could cycle them up to see where they needed clearance. I ended up cutting the frame right behind the lower 4-link mounts. A cross tube was put in behind those mounts off of the frame and that is where the upper 4-link mounts are built (I will have another section about the rear suspension components). interested to see your A-arm setup. have you considered using an 86-95 4wd spindle converted to a lift spindle?

I had Mark Newhan build the front suspension and used his old spindles he built that were on his Chevy. Click here (http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7420)
And here are a couple of pictures before it was done. He modified the top mount on the spindles and it wasn't done in this picture. The spindle had to be taller and he made it a verticle uniball mount.

and I also attached a couple of pictures when after I painted and assembled everything.

I will have more details and pictures once I write the front suspension section.

Looking forward to seeing how the T100 project goes. A friend and I have been going down for every SCORE race for the past 3 years and have been going to Baja for 10+ years. Love the people and Baja and all the stories and experiences we have everytime we go. I have a T100 also and we are planning on building a race truck out of it (Only have our XR650R's for fun now). It's cool to be able to see a play by play review of your project. I'm in O-side also so maybe at the Baja 500 in June we'll have a chance to meet up and I can buy you a beer or 5. Keep the pictures coming!

Simple and functional is what I was shooting for. Also a truck that not many people build. I think the only thing holding it back is the lack of a V8 in it... I've had it out many times but the big test was a 10 day prerun / Locos Mocos trip for the 1000 last November and it did great.

Upper links for the rear? They are just straight tubes with 7/8 heims. I still need to post everthing for the front of the truck. I got busy and haven't worked on this for awhile. I'll try to post more soon.

There is a 90% chance I will have the t100 at the Expo this weekend at our outdoor display spot. I wanted to have it painted and interior in by now but that didn't happen... check it out in person if you get a chance.

I did it myself. I have a 24" vinyl cutter here. Its black and two shades of grey on top of the original paint, not a full wrap. If you look at it up close its definitely not perfect with some small wrinkles on the curves and bubbles where the old paint had nics or whatever. But its a prerunner that gets used so I don't want to mess up an expensive paint job anyway...
I have been wanting to paint it but haven't been able to decide on a design and money is the other problem. So doing this in vinyl turned out to be the best option

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot to post about that.

I found some of the splined collars at Kartek that Sway-A-Way used to make. Then we used some chromolly rectangle tube and made new arms.

Hmmm.... What --does-- and LS1 go for these days? Wanna sell me your turbo and automatic for my piggy T-100? My wife would love to be alble to drive it...

And I allready drive your old T100, Curtis... you should just keep selling me your hand me downs. I mean, how hard can it be to swap a 2WD automatic for a 4WD manual? (Tho I was digging the manual in the silt beds south of RM 837 at the 1000...)

Hey Curtis are you going to bring your truck out to the DASH......

Curtis Guise
December 26th, 2006, 10:56
It has the SC and a kit from URD which is bigger injectors, colder thermostat & piggy back computer. The main problem is that its a 1995 so the stock computer limits what you can do with it. The engine also has over 200k on it so pumping more HP into it isn't going to help it any. I just hope it lasts until I can afford a V8. Santa didn't bring me one so I'll have to keep saving... ;)

I plan on going to the Dash but not sure if the T100 will make it. I broke the crossover exhaust tube on the engine during the 1000 and haven't pulled it out to weld it yet.

Mini update....

Before our trip the the 1000 last year I decided to update the spindles on the front of the truck. The spindles were originally built by Mark Newhan for his Chevy and modified to work on my truck after he built new ones for his. The spindles used pins and hubs from Stock Car Products. They work good but the diameter of the pin is pretty small. I decided to get snouts and hubs that are the same as on the rear end of my truck. I had my friend Chris machine the snouts to fit over the existing spindle.

Advantages are that it's bullet proof now, and all the parts are interchangible from front to rear. I also have spare drive plates on the front hubs that would work on the rear now and the spare bearings I have work with all four hubs.

I can't find the pics of the finished spindles so I will post some later when I make the front suspension thread. I attached what the old spindle pin looks like and the used rear end snouts before we modified them to fit.

I built the 4runner a few years ago. Ran it for about a year and had to sell it before we moved to SoCal. It came out pretty nice for being a budget build and doing all the work myself. It worked really good. It was a 1985 with EFI.
There are some shots of it in the Gription DVD (rubicon section) I put out a couple of years ago.

Hey there Curtis,

I'm wondering what kind of steering your t-100 uses?

It looked like some kind of beefy hydraulics, but I didn't look at it long.

Fox Racing Shox have been long time supporters of the Dezert People Video Series and race-dezert.com. In April I changed out all four of my bump stops to 2" body by 4" travel Fox's. Yesterday I installed my new 3"x18" 3 tube bypass and 2.5" coil-overs in the rear of the T100. I went with piggy back shocks for a cleaner setup.

Next phase will be to swap out the front bypasses and figure out if I can fit 2.5" coil overs instead of the 2" ones that are in there now.

looks like a lot of pre-load on your springs. what are the lengths and weights?

Curtis Guise
August 20th, 2007, 07:11
I don't remember the specs on the springs right now but there is only about an inch of preload. If I take off the second spare tire (I do for shorter trips) then I back off the preload at least 1/2".

charlie_brown
October 7th, 2007, 08:29
saw your truck at the expo for the first time. question about your lower 4-link bars, it seamed realy long, do they mount at about the same place as your out put shaft is on your tranny? how much plunge do you have?

Curtis Guise
October 20th, 2007, 10:00
They are 60" long. It's an extra cab so I had to use a two piece drive shaft. the center carrier bearing is somewhere between the front lower link pivots and upper link pivots. The plunge isn't bad, I think 1/2" to 1". But its been years since I checked it.

Good question, I think I lost track years ago. I bought the truck for about $6k. I sold my class 7 truck for about $11k and that was spent on shocks, all the tubing and some other parts. And it's been a money pit ever since :D

yah but theyre cheaper than women right? plus theres benfits to ridin when YOU want. out of curiosity, do you mind the regular steering, moreso would it be beneficial now that youve driven it with the new box, to run a reduction box? im debatin it on my rig, think the benefit may be worth the effort

Curtis Guise
March 17th, 2008, 18:18
My steering is perfect. Inside the cab is all stock except for the steering wheel. The PS pump is the stock Toyota one (3.4 V6 engine) and I plumbed it to the GM steering box. No reduction box.

My race truck had a 2:1 quickener because I had to shorten the pitman arm. That made it harder to steer. I'm sure the stock PS pump on the 22R engine was the problem.

After a year and a half of collecting parts we finally got the rear end installed a couple of weeks ago. Big thanks to Mark Newhan for all the help with this project.

What we expected to take two days turned into four after realizing the rear cage needed an X built into it. There is allot of cracking in the floor at the back of the cab and one of my small cross tubes that is for my cooler mount is cracked. And the new upper track rods for the 4-link needed new mounts so that took some extra time.

Parts list:
Dirt-Tech 4" housing. (http://dirt-tech.com/)
Desert Specialties 2.5" hubs. (http://desertspecialties.com/)
40 spline axles (thanks to Summers Bros for helping out with an issue on the splines. They are not SB axles (http://www.summersbrothersracing.com))
Wilwood 6 piston calipers from ORW. (http://www.offroadwarehouse.com/)
13" rotors.
Redline Shockproof gear oil. (http://www.redlineoil.com/)
1-1/4" heims for the upper and lower links from Rod End Supply. (http://rodendsupply.com/)
New Currie 9+ nodular 9" case with Strange 40 spline spool and Motive 6.00 gears from Nate at Blitzkrieg (http://www.blitzkriegoffroad.com/)

Unfortunately the new gears are whining so I just pulled out the diff and will be taking it to Currie for them to check out. Hopefully they can fix it for me.

Next project in the next week or two is to make all new brake lines. (thanks to Wally at ORW for getting me all the parts) When I first built the truck I went with allot of braided line (someone at Wilwood said it would work fine... no it doesn't...) The brakes are worse now with the bigger calipers so I am starting with new lines. Then will change the master cylinder if it needs a bigger one.

I went with 6.00 gears for now because I changed my tire size to 37" last year and the Toyota engine has been having a hard time with it. The next big project will be installing the Turn Key LS2 so I might need to change the gears again when the time comes.

Here are some pictures. Starting with the old rear end still in the truck.

High pinion diffs are available for the 9" but they are mostly used for rock crawling where you want as much clearance as possible. From what I have seen there are less gear ration options and they are more expensive. Not really necessary in a prerunner or race truck application.

The gear ratios are limited, but the main reason not to use them in a race or prerunner application is you're running on the coast side of the gear so the are weaker..

Update - The second set of Motive gears were whining more than the first set. So I ended up taking the diff to ORW in Escondido and had Ken check it out. He made some changes and now its better but still makes some noise. It's more noticeable at lower speeds and not so much on the highway so I will run it until I change gears after the LS2 goes in.

Next project, new brake lines & mount Vision X LED bar on the front bumper.

they are all going to make that noise. i have had 2 sets of 5:88 so far and they all make that gear noise. when you have a fully built linked, solid mounted cage, and low gears, its going to whine. i tried all different types of oil, had the gears reset. everyone sounded a bit different but its there.

for short drives its ok. for the long ones, i bought a intercom.

Curtis Guise
October 27th, 2009, 23:32
I've had an intercom since I built the truck. The old rear end had 5:29's in it. When I first built it they whined like it does now. They were Yukon gears and I heard they weren't very good after I had the diff put together. So I had them replace them right away and the new set were quiet, didn't hear anything. It was great the last 4-5 years until now with the new rear end. I think its a combination of the 6:00 ratio and Motive. I have heard of allot of people having problems with Motive's making noise. But some do have quiet ones also.

No, you just have to unscrew the clamps that hold hard line down to the housing and the the caliper will move out of the way. And you can use something to tie it up.

Here are a few pics of the new sway bar we built a few weeks ago. I also installed a pair of the new All German Motorsports coil-over sliders. Review of those coming after the Baja 1000. And a couple of pics of the new Off Road Warehouse limit straps I picked up last week.

Did a sway bar like this on another DD truck, works amazing and saves a ton of money on the high dollar parts.

Wow I have never seen this design before.. Was looking at buying the LeDuc set up from Kartek but this looks simple and alot cheaper! What material is the cross tube? chromo? Anyone else ran this setup on a racetruck? Thanks..Robbie

Looks like a real nice setup. For what its worth we broke a Cal Prefun bar and were told congratulations your the first to break one ever and they would not replace it.:(

Why should they?

I was told by Curt at the time there was a batch of bars that may have had a bad heat treat. Oh well water under the bridge at this point, and the truck seems to work better without the bar anyhow.

Looks good Curtis!

Tom at S.I. Motorsports built a sway bar like that for Stu's F-150 and it works great.

The tube is 1.75" x .156 4130. It actually sways a little more than I would like. So I might eventually go with a bigger tube.

My friends made the exact same one as this for a full size Bronco and they love it. But it never had a sway bar so there was nothing to compare it to.

Are you talking about the ends of the sway bar mounts? Those are custom made by us and we used a bronze bushing that I bought from Mcmaster Carr. Or of you are talking about the shock coil spring sliders those are made by All German Motorsports. At the 1000 last year I noticed cracks in the stud areas on my front hubs. 3-4 on each hub had cracks... They are rear Speedway Engineering hubs that were drilled for 5on5.5 spacing and I think the hubs aren't big enough for that spacing because there isn't much aluminum in that area.

Nate at Blitzkrieg took a set of his 7200 hubs and made the bearing spacing work with my spindles. Pictures of the new hubs will be posted soon.

Scary stuff right there, its never a comfortable feeling when one of your tires passes you with the studs attached. Especially one of the frts, and Ive seen some really nice race cars destroyed from failed hubs over the years.

...studs being pulled through, aluminum corrosion. Good thing you cought it before it decided to ruin your day. Good inspection payed off.

You have to remember that they are not cracked in the center, only at the thinnest point, and you would have to pull a stud through a lot of material before they would come apart. I've seen a ton of miles put on cracked hubs like that with no damage - but I would replace them too.

Yeah it scared me at first but after thinking about it I think I would have to drive it super hard to actually break them. Either way it's still time to update to better hubs. I have all of the parts now I just need some time to do swap it all out. I have a new set of Wilwood 6 piston calipers and 13" rotors I am upgrading to also. The back was upgraded when I put the new rear end in it over a year ago.
