CAL-CITY GP#4 - BIOLOGICAL REPORT

Some of you might be interested on this:

Here are two links for the Biological report made pre- and post-GP #4 at Cal City.
We got dinged a bit regarding cutting or rounding-out some turns/corners. We are going to make a conscious effort to mitigate that for next year. WE MUST STAY ON THE MARKED COURSE AND MARKED CORNERS if we hope to continue to have great events in California City, in 2006.

Being a Registered Professional Geologist in California who works primarily in the environmental field, I thought the report was well done. This type of effort will allow us to continue to enjoy the desert, IF people don't over shoot the turns and stay on course.

Although I typically, don't get involved in Environmental Impact Reports I would be more than willing to help out if you ever have the need.

Dosn't squaring of a turn (direct 90 degress) do more damage (diging big ruts) then making a turn over a longer distance?

Jack, NO.
Since we are using existing roads, trails, streets, easments, etc., it would just damage the corner which eventually would be renewed by the desert and its climate, since we won't use that same course and direction for at least 12 months.
What they are worried about is that by cutting or "rounding the corner" we may hit some type of species (they call it a "take") and also damage some flora and fauna.

It's a minor thing that we have to comply with in order for us to keep using our desert. Small price to pay, we say.

When you think about it: At last week's GP there were almost 100 riders racing over 2 hours and logging about 785 laps, and after all that, those few corners were the only visible damage on the entire course! We must be doing something right. If we correct this, we should enjoy a lot of racing in the future.

On some of our courses in Northern Nevada, we have begun to stake out the corner with tee posts and stringer pennants. It's more work during set up and tear down, but has saved us the rath of BLM... During the pre-runs drivers see the tee stakes and so far have avoided them. No drivers have complained, but the understand the reasons for the marking off of the corners.

Good Luck

Rich. Excellent suggestion. We're planning on something similar. We will either station a check at critical turns, or stake, rope, banner, caution tape corners to funnel all racers into the same corner. We will also sign the corners and cover these matters more emphatically during the competitor's meeting. We agree with you.
These are small matters that if are taken care of, will really help the future of our sport out here in Cal City. Thanks.

Good news!: We are delighted to report that we've heard back from the Director of Fish and Game and he is delighted with the biologist report(s) we've sent them, and the way we have preformed all year long and would like to meet with us, the City and County ASAP to plan out our 2006 event. As he said, "We'd like to stay out of your hair and let you do your events," as long as you and your racers keep doing what you've been doing.

Needless to say we're jazzed about this and we'd like to meet ASAP as well. We've submitted out proposed 2006 schedule and also posted it on our website. Check it out: http://www.bpmotorsports.net/06-PROPOSED-GP-Schedule.htm
