Anybody ever use the Coleman Cold Heat soldering iron? I need a new soldering tool and can get them pretty cheap, but I don't want to waste my time/money if they are nothing but a POS.

The electrioncs guys at my work needed a reason to buy on and try it out. They finally needed one when they were in the field and they couldn't use a normal soldering gun. Long story short....it sucked.

soldering guns are fairly inexpensive, get one with a trigger that you can control the heat, not the fixed amperage type. 30 amps is plenty for soldering wire connections, 15 amps is for circuit board stuff. for large wire, like welding/battery cables, i just use a small propane torch.
just my $0.02.

Thanks guys. I'll pass.
I have one, and I like it for small stuff in the field, but it does take if different techneque to use. You can not hold a warm pudle of solder on the tip, you must make contact with the two tips and what you are soldering then add the solder at the same time, can be trcky but does work without running power and they are cheaper and more durable then the gas irons.

Mine was a gift and had thought it saved me when I needed one at the shop and all my soldering stuff was at home in the garage. But the thing broke/overheated/melted before I could solder a wire! I took it back to Costco and when I showed them what I had to return the girl said to her supervisor "We have another on of those solder things again..."

I love my butane soldering iron... it's a Weller, and it's done work from San Francisco to Parker to way South in Baja... a few years of bouncing aroudn in a canvas bag w/ all my connectors/spools of wire, etc, and it's still going strong.
