Bronco Trans Help

OK I am used to helping , but it is time for me to ask for help. I have a 96 bronco with auto trans. After going out to the desert last weekend the warning light on the OD came on and speedo started acting up (go off and on when driving) and the trans was shifting rough. I hate trouble shooting so where should I start to look for the problem? I know it is electrical but don't know much about the sensors for the transmissions. Location of problem area would be nice. You need to start by checking for trouble codes. If it has stored a code, which it should have, post the code and I'll try to help.

First pull the codes like said above, your`s being a 96 I belive you will need a obd-2 code reader. vatozone will usually have a reader they will loan you.

with the speedo coming and going check your VSS,(Vehicle Speed Sensor) for a lose conector of a torn wire etc. if all looks good pull the VSS and see if the pick up is full of junk(kinda look like you stuck a magnet in dirt if that makes sense to you). If so clean it up reset the coputer and try again, if it look like metal slivers pull the diff cover and check the tone ring on the R&P for any worn looking or teth missing.

I have the same problem on my 94 f1, except my speedo will bonce once I get past 75 then shift hard from 1-2 once or twice then clear its self up. till I go past 75 again.

If you dont come up with any codes and the VSS or tone ring is not your problem I can post off my ford service/repair manual cd, on how to make the computer throw a code in a driving test.
I would post up the whole tranny and wirng section but my CD is for 93-94`s and Im sure the wiring has changed a bit for the 95-96 years

According to the junkyard that I got my 94 E4OD tranny from, the wiring for the E4ODs did change in 95. I don't know if the codes changed any, though. Either way, it sure sounds like a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) issue.

Speed sensor in the rear end was the problem on two of my fords with those sensors. It is magnetic and will collect steel shavings etc. Sometimes just taking it out and cleaning it will cure it and of course change the oil and check the gears. There is also a couple of the same type sensors on the trans.

same problem in my bronco. I have a 95 with a 9inch and installed calprerun senor on
the transfer case out put. I am gooing to install a gated shifter and manaul shift body.
when you fully accell the truck allways bogs down then shifts really hard. good luck

i would blame operator error on this one, but i use the bronco sometimes too.

I forgot to thank you guys for the responses. I took the rearend sensor off and cleaned it, it seems to have stopped. Thanks' Ron Plunkett

I had the same problem when i installed a 9 inch rearend. there was no where for the speed sinsor to plug into so i called curt leduc and got the VSS relocator up to the output shaft and have had no probs since.
