How To Install Harnesses???

Ok, iam prerunnin my truck, and i want to run a prp seat set up, up front, now i want to also run harnesses, but i cannot afford to get seats, harnesses and the All pro off road cage, ALL at the same time, how could i install them without using the cage? has anyone run harnesses without a cage

It all depends on whether you can find an appropriate place to anchor the shoulder harnesses. Visit some of the websites of companies that sell harnesses for road-racing and rally cars, like Sparco, Schroth, MOMO, etc. Many of them will have instructions that you can download that are specifically for applications where the vehicle does not have a rollcage. All that said, make sure that you build some decent seat mounts. The vehicle-specific seat brackets that I've seen and used are all JUNK.

installing seats and harnesses w/out a cage, is a VERY bad idea. especially if you plan on driving hard. in the event of a rollover, you will be unable to move away from the crushing roof. (because of no cage). cage first.....then seats and restraints

Just tape the harness to the back of the seat that way when you roll your truck without a cage the coroner can pull your body out easier.

Even though there is a lot of sas in the previous posts....... They are dead on. (no pun intended). If you are going to run hard you need a cage. Wait a bit longer and save your cash. Get a good cage built, buy the seats and harnesses and then go haul arse. Those belts are just added bling without the cage. Do it right and you'll live to do it again.

In my ranger I had the factory seat belts, but when chasing / pitting is sucked because the belts would always tighten up and not realise choking me in the seat. What I did was get some Impact belts with the clips and I got the eye bolts from them also. The seat belt eye bolts were the same size and thread as the factory bolts holding the orginal seabelts to floor. I put the eye bolts in place of original bolts. This way I would still have the factory seat belts for daily driving and I could clip in the Impact lap belts if I knew I was going to be chasing or pitting. Not the best situation as I had no sholder belts and this is not for hard running, but it worked well for what I was doing.

I agree that a rollcage is a great addition to any vehicle that will be driven hard off-road, but you guys are making it sound like 4/5-point harnesses are MORE dangerous than regular seatbelts in a vehicle without a rollcage. But if the harness is installed correctly, that's not true at all.

I agree. They are defiletly not less safe. If it is a matter of comfort while chasing or cruising the desert that is another story. They are a more comfortable restraint (adjustability) while driving in the dirt and a worthy addition. Just don't expect them to be much of extra protection in a high speed crash without the other components.

In a truck, you can go to the back of the cab to get the proper angle for the shoulder harnesses. you just use LARGE washers and sandwich the body, and if you do it right you can even hide it behind the interior plastic trim. You could also use (or make) someting similar to this :

We preran parts of the 1000 course this year with seven other prerunner trucks, one went over the side with stock belts and a cage he'd installed ONLY 3 WEEKS prior to the run. He got 10 stitches in the noggin and his wife got some bruises. Without the cage, it would have been much more serious, maybe deadly. If I gotta choose between a cage and 5-point belts, I'll take the cage. Just my 2 $ents.

i say no cage/ no harness.
The harness is very strong and safe, and will be a great addition for an serious truck with a cage. The fact is very simple,

Harness holds you in and upright
Rollover brings roof closer
Harness then holds head up to meet with roof
Then you are not doing so good.

Regular belt holds you in
Rollover brings roof closer
Regular belt allows body to tuck into seat area
You are better off, and still have head (hopefully)

My brother survived a 75mph rollover in a regular cab Toyota with no cage. He was wearing his stock seatbelt, and the roof caved in flush with the hood and bed. He was pushed to the side by the roof. NO DOUBT AT ALL, WITH A 5 POINT HARNESS HE WOULD BE DEAD, really really dead.

I support the cage and harness as a combo idea, and the cage should be first. My 2 cents;)
