LS 7 in a Class 1 Car

hopefully you motor guys can help me out.. we are running a LS 7 in our class one car.. its a crate motor with a cam, approximately how many race miles can a motor like that last? a basically stock motor consitantly turning 5500 to 6000 rpm concerns me.

what kind of service needs to be done to enhance the life of the motor, and what should we be looking for as signs of trouble?

You'll get a lot of miles out of it. Keep the dirt out (filtration), use premium lubercants, send oil samples for analysis (Blackstone Labs) and do leak-down tests. A full season or two is very do-able.

I agree that it should be able to go a season. I would check it at teh end of the season. I know that some of the Class 1 guys that we deal with, freshen them up at after 2500 race miles. This is a good rule of thumb in my opinion.

We ran a Northstar V-8 in our 1 car for about 3 seasons. I know it isnt an LS7, which has much better components, but we went about 3k race miles on it running pretty hard to keep pace with the bigger motor guys. We had a leak down done and it was fine, had great power and burned no oil. All we did was change the oil after every time out and had a dual UMP air cleaner setup to keep it clean. I heard guys going about 5-7k with the same motors.

Story has it that when GM was road racing the C5R (supposedly almost the same motor) they didn't do any major work in the pits like some of the other teams. They would use the same motor all weekend and just change the oil. It is supposed to be a REALLY tough motor.

Of course we all know how rumors go.

Use quality gasoline and your engine will last alot longer
