The following is a problem my buddy wanted me to post on here for him;

I have a 98 GMC 1500 that I built into a prerunner race truck. I just installed a fuel cell and after-market fuel pump on a stock Votec 5.0/305. the truck was running good for about 5 hours and then it started to miss/hesitate during acceleration. It will either do it in low RPM or higher RPM's. When I put the truck in drive and floor the gas it will accelerate then miss/hesitate just before it shifts into the next gear, then there is a surge in power and it will shift into the next gear, then it starts all over again for 2nd & 3rd gear. 4th & 5th gear is ok.

I have already checked: all the wiring to the fuel pump, catalytic converter, all the ignition electrical components, replaced the fuel pressure regulator, replaced spark plug wires, cap & rotor, I cleaned out the fuel pump filter, I fixed/cleared the TDC codes that were in the computer, I wired the stock fuel gage into the after-market sending unit for the fuel cell, rewired the fuel pressure sensor from stock tank to the fuel cell.

The after-market fuel pump puts out 100 PSI before it hits the stock regulator. The stock regulator regulates fuel pressure to 52 PSI.

I CANNOT figure out the problem...if anyone has ANY suggestions please let me know. Or, if you have had the same problem please let me know how you fixed it. THANKS SO MUCH!

First of all you need to check the fuel pressure when it is showing the symptoms you are describing. Then you can diagnose if it is fuel or spark. You can do this by running the gauge up on to the hood so you can drive it while you look at it.

Second check the timing and the distributor. Sometimes the cap will crack and slop will develop causing irregular timing.

Finally look into the ignition control module. try and find someone else with the same one and borrow because i'm sure it is not cheap.

He checked the fuel pressure when he was driving and it does drop. He also has replaced the cap, rotor,wires, plugs and ignition control module.
Do you think the 100psi pump is too much for the stock fuel regulator?
