I want to get into some lower level desert racing. I may have an opportunity to get a 1600cc joyner buggy for very cheep!!!.(http://thunderinc.com/)FRom what i can tell i could get into the sportsman class w/ some mods to the buggy. Would i have to practically rebuild the thing or would it be a good platform for a cheep race car?(i'm getting it for next to nothing).

The structure, especially the cage LOOKS a little light to get through tech... What is it made out of (dia/ wall/material)?

That thing is a direct chinese copy (rip off) of the ATV Racing Tazcar (http://atvracing1.com/tazcar.htm).
Whiplash might let you run it - very hard to say. You'll need to do a lot to it, though.
Joyner uses roll pins in the steering u-joints, if that gives you any idea of the quality.
Personally, I'd not risk my life in that particular vehicle.
Remember, you get what you pay for - and I'm guessing that you don't pay much for a new one.
I'd look into a vehicle that at least has a real reputation behind it.

I am with kfab on this one. I would invest your money into a car with a reputation that you know you will survive riding in.

I considered one of these buggies also. Joyner appears to be the most advance of the Chinese buggies. This was my conclusion, after considering how reliable they probably are, how hard it would be to get parts, how few aftermarket parts will be available and the low resale value. If I wanted something to race, go with a VW based buggy. If I wanted something to play, go with a VW based buggy or a Yamaha Rhino.

Read some of the old forums about the new cage regulations for SCORE before you buy anything. If you want to race off road and your on a budget, Class 9 is the way to go. Racing is never cheap but we are the budget race teams. Check out www.class9race.com. I might be selling my car soon. PM me if your interested.

We modified a Joyner buggy for a friend....his rollcage was bolted together in places, and the tubing is thin and cheap.....I would think it would take a considerable amount of work and money to get that thing SCORE legal.....yeah, you MIGHT be able to race Whiplash, but would you really want to put your life in the hands of a buggy made to be as cheap as it can be?
They are OK for farting around on the trails and stuff.......but I'd be terrified to be out on a race course in that thing....
What you need is one of these.........:D
