I think I have finally decided to get an ls1 but now my question is what should i do about the wire harness? do I need to get the wire harness and ecu fromt he car they came out of? or is it better to get like an aftermarket harness and ecu such as the umi orone of the others on the market? I wont be using the harness for anything but engine management and fuel. Ill also be using a manual tranny. so that has no electrical contection.

its better to get the aftermarket ecu and harness. redline has a good setup that mounts all your ignition, fuel pumps, fan relays all on a bracket by the motor it runs about 1800 .then you just have to run a few wires back to the motor.

I have an LS1 from a junkyard and I used the stock computer and modified harness. Speartech can do the harness mods for around $300 and a mail order tune is anywhere $100-$300 depending on who does it. Painless sells a fuse block as well. www.ls1tech.com is a great source for info regarding ls1 swaps. Just do your research and you should have very few problems

That is just what I did too.
You dont need to waste your money on an aftermarket computer and harness. The stock computer has more capability then the aftermarket ones.
I used http://www.wait4meperformance.com They can tune to your application and can modify your harness.
