View Full Version : re-building a E-4OD

I might have to rebuild my E-4OD ..
during the Past 1000 I was in puerteticos when it started slipping in low gear..

It seems to be slipping from a stop until I reach around 2500 rpm & also starts slipping as I slow down..

Seems to slip hardly even noticiably in high range.

I've been told it might be the front pump or maybe even the tourqe converter..
I'm looking for ideas on what it might be & who might be the best shop to bullet proof the trans for me if I need a full rebuild.

I dont race it.
But I do pre-run it & chase with it & also enjoy taking it on some of the slow twisty mountain trails from time to time..

Thanks for any help you guys can offer me.

I'd contact Steve Culhane to rebuild it. He will also be able to answer your questions about Ford E4OD racing parts. Steve built my E4OD in my F350 and I'm real happy with it.

Funny that you mention him... I spoke to him earlier today.
Seems like a good guy & was very helpful on the phone. http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/cheers.gif

What do you guys think about just getting a tranny from Ford with a 3 year warrenty for $2400.00? http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/shrug.gif

If you get a new one from Ford or if you rebuild the one you got, be sure to thoroughly flush the cooler lines and the in-radiator cooler. In fact, you might even want to get a new radiator. Over on FSB, a few folks reported a leak within the in-radiator cooler that caused the E4OD to eventually take a dump.

Also, Ford TSB for E4OD's calls for an external in-line filter. It's not the cartridge type, but another type that is supposedly not as restrictive with respect to flow. I don't remember the part number, but I can look it up for you if you want. Mine cost about $60-$70 from the dealership.

Lastly, be sure to add the biggest auxiliary trans cooler you can fit after it's all said and done. I bypassed the in-radiator cooler and installed a Haynes Part No. 679 stacked plate cooler and a Haynes 408 tube and fin cooler in series after the external in-line filter. So far so good after a year or so on the used junkyard E4OD I swapped in after the original one took a dump (cost about $600).

I do already run an external Filter with cooling fins & I just bought But not installed yet a B&M Cooler & its the largest one B&M makes with a built on fan.

& sure I'll take that part number for your filter...
& a Picture of it might be helpful too.

My finned external only cost me like $27.00 Its like a Raybates or whatever its a universal trans/power steering filter.

I don't have any pics of it, but here's the Ford part number:

XC3Z-7B155-CA

It looks alot like the magnefine filter - http://www.magnefine.com/default.html

And who knows? Maybe it is just a magnefine filter rebadged by Ford? If so, I found 'em online for about $14.

Anyway, I found out about the filter in this forum that's supposedly frequented by trans techs:

http://www.network54.com/Forum/260730/

They claim that the best trans filter to get for the E4OD is the one that has the least restriction on flow. According to them, good flow and pressure is just as important as controlling temperature, and they claim that the cartridge type filters (like the ones used for engine oil) restrict flow too much. Whether that's true or not, I have no idea, but Ford's own TSB requires the use of this kind of inline filter after rebuilding/replacing the E4OD.

Either way, let us know how it goes with whatever setup you decide to go with.

The Ford one or the Magnefine one? If you paid only $27 for the Ford one, then I guess I got ripped off big time! Where'd you get yours from? Anyway, like I said, I saw the Magnefine one for about $14 online. I may get that one when it comes time to replace the old Ford one next summer.

Oh, and one other thing. Considering how expensive it is to rebuild these E4ODs, have you thought of swapping yours out for a C6? I realize you'd give up overdrive, but they're supposedly stronger and much cheaper and easier to rebuild.

Whatever you do, if you get the E4OD rebuilt or do the C6 swap and decide to reinstall it yourself to save some money, DON'T LEAVE THE REAR WIRING HARNESS DANGLING NEAR THE SIDE OF THE TRANS!!! I made that mistake and paid dearly for it when it got caught in the front driveshaft and spun itself around it til it was violently yanked out - effectively killing the Bronco and taking the brakeline, MLPS and shift cable linkage with it - leaving me stuck in the middle lane of I-20 with Dallas traffic and 18-wheelers trying to swerve around me at 70 mph!

I meant the magneefine.

I guess I might of been the one to over pay? :o

& no I wont go C6 Due to my axle gears..

I have a great combo right now.

Wow that had to suck for you about the fwy shut down...

While we're on the subject, what does a C6 swap entail? I've got an AODE in a 2001 supercrew and I know I'm on borrowed time with it. Everytime I cross the border I get anxious about it.

Well I'm sure you'd have to custom legnthen or shorten your drive shafts assuming the trannys are not the same length & of course the mount is probably different.

I'm sure theres more.....

The 2001 is a 5.4l?

There is no adapter I know of to put a c6 on a 5.4.

Will on the subject of the E4OD and I believe Blanco has got his Transmission back, it made me wonder what I should do since I'm adding a remote filter, temp gauge, and cooler in the near future.

What have people done to the internals of the E4OD to make them last longer?

I just got off the phone w/ Culhane and he recommended if I wanted to put a shift kit in it all I'd need is a stiffer accumulator spring, made by Superior, to firm up shifting. He suggested not using the Transgo or BM shift kits.

Has anyone used the superior products or have advise what I could do while the transmission will be drained and I'll have access to the inside of the trans?
