Can anyone tell me what the fuel pressure should be on my 98 Ranger 4.0?

441 ±55 kPa (64 ±8 psi)

Thank you for that. That explains a lot. My pre-runner has been running poorly, and 42 psi would explain it.

That will definitely do it!

You may already know this, but put a Motorcraft pump in it. If you don't, you'll probably regret it. If you don't have a good source for it let me know and I'll sell it to you at my cost.

Why does it have to be motorcraft?

I work at a large independent repair shop and we've tried every brand available to us. It's been a long time since we stopped using aftermarket fuel pumps. We just got tired of doing jobs twice because of inferior parts. Not to mention the fact that if the fuel pump we installed fails, we pay a tow bill and have to deal with an unhappy customer.

At least a couple times a year I get a vehicle in the shop that just had the fuel pump replaced and is still running poorly or not at all. The first question out of my mouth is "What brand pump did you install?" The answer is never an OE pump. Then we do some diag and find out it's a junk aftermarket pump. Usually the customer (usually another shop) argues with us and tells us we're full of... and calls us liars and takes the car. Eventually they figure out we're right.

Ok, I'm rambling. Bottome line....

Buy the Motorcraft or OE. The difference in quality is night and day.
