Could I put a 5spd tranny in place of a 4spd tranny just by switching the tranny, in a 1990 toyota 2wd pickup?
Thanks

well you would have one extra gear right? 5th gear.... :)
yes the trans will bolt right to your motor, you can use the same clutch, shift lever, driveshaft, yada yada.

jessro,
some toyotas came with a 4 speed for watever reason, i guess the really basic models. Those trannys are actually very good, stronger then the 5-speed, the best part is that the trucks with a 4-speed have an 8" rear end, even the 2wd instead of the normal 7.5. Keep that in mind if your going to do a re-gear, buy the right gears, I learned that the hard way.

the 2wd's with the 4spd/8" rear ends were the "1 ton" models.
and as an aside.......the 2wd 8" third member is NOT re-gearable. you must get a 4wd 8" third member and gear that.

I re-geared my 2wd 8" to 4:88 gears, the only problem i ran into was the housing, the pinion hole was offset way too much to accomodate the enormous ring gear that was there originally. I had to go pick a 4wd 8" housing, which cost me $50 at a junk yard. But i agree with you the vast abundance of toyota third members it is not worth the hassle, better just to go pick up a 4wd 8". If i knew I would have done the same
