not to talk smack but is this car way over priced, how much does a used class 10 go for, sure it is prepped, ready, and beautiful but $125,000.00 Dlls. seems pretty pricey, how much does a new class 10 cost and from what top notch builders...

Its a little high, but on ricks deffense it does come with trailer and all the spares. Plus if you went to jimco and tryed to duplicate that car you spend 150k plus. So being a done running car, with all the spares (And raced by Rob Mac) I would say thats not a horrible deal.

so, it would cost about $150,000.00 Dlls to get a new Jimco 10 car, wow, can't you almost have a 1 car built for that price?
Which is more expensive to run, a 10 or a 1?

sorry I just saw that the trailer is included, so take off about $15,000.00 for the trailer, it is still about $110,000.00 Dlls, still seems high, it is about the best you can get though, top of the line EVERYTHING...

There not far off, If you put a stock ls1 in it, it would be cheaper. But to build a full on bad a%# class one you gotta figure 200k plus. (All these prices reflect paying for a turn key car ready to race)

Are you asking if this one car is over priced? or are you asking is racing over priced?

I'm asking about this car, seems to be quite expensive, it is top of the line though, I just thought that 10 cars were a lot less expensive, especially not new.

I believe that it's matter of supply and demand. Most builders have a back log of clients with money in hand ready to buy a new car. So that would drive the price up on used cars from the same builders. I'm not sure how many awards and trophys Jimco cars currently hold but that is part of what your buying. Your buying peace of mind, knowing that these builders have been around for awhile and have a race "Proven" car. Just because some one may have a chop saw and a tubing bender does'nt make them marketable.

I bought my class 1 car in 1999 turn key from Jimco, it had the best of everything available at the time, scat v-4 fortins best 5 speed etc. after tax I paid 105K. almost seven years later i have recieved offers to sell for 125k +. a new car will cost you arround 200k from any builder who has a reputation and a waiting list. they are basicaly the same car. i understand supply and demand but lets get real. the major builders are getting rich and this bubble will burst. it all started when Neil Kline sold his class 1 to kory sheeler for 155k about three years ago, about 25k more than he paid jimco for it. we can all thank him in my opinion for pricing racing out of most peoples pockets. is this 10 car worth the money?? it is to somebody!!

"the major builders are getting rich"
I'm sure there are several "major builders" who would disagree with that.

No offense guy but you are way off. You need to price out all the pieces and parts for your car. Then add in all the time to ship, pick up, deal with the vendors, fix f-ups, and reprep all the new parts you just bought. Then the cost of the chassis, suspension and geometry(btw the only things that makes your car go fast). what you are paying for is experience! plain and simple. This sport is dominated by part time racers (not a bad thing just a reality). So a guy that sells funiture, or lumber,or whatever they do comes to the builders and tells them how much it should cost. Just put that situation into whatever your job is and see how ridiculious that is. I would recomend anyone who has that oppinion on these cars to spend some time at a fab shop and see how much work it is VS how much work you "Think it is". This post is not made to offend but to educate. For example: 4130 1 1/2" tubing was like $2.30 a foot 2-3years ago. Now it is almost $5. Aluminum is double! All these materials go into every part on the car from shocks to steering wheels. so everything goes up! Not to mention the Plain simple cars of yesterday are not good enough anymore. People want bells and whistles. well that is money! I have to go now my limo is here to take me to my vacation home in the alps.

Hey Derek, I have major respect for you and your business!!! I like to think Simple is on its way back! Look at the championship cars in SCORE last years, some pretty old cars in the list, plus some pretty simple ones too!

The Alumicraft that DH drove so well in the mil, looks simple and I love the fact that he used an old (simple), trusty V-dub motor instead of the high zoot Hondas. Darren, can you shead any light on the cost of your car. No specifics, but some relative idea, and what the cost difference between running a VW and the Honda are.

Are you looking for a 10 car to purchase or just commenting? If you are, Doug Fortin's single seat 10 car is for sale for far less than 125k. It's growing old, but it's still very fast and handles beautifully. Just ask Hardesty what he thinks about it:D

My point was that the majority of the customers dont want what we want. It is totally monkey see monkey do. You know that. Its all timing. When we ran the aircooled package with Will starting in 01 we got 2 Baja 1000 2nd's, 2 Baja 500 2nd's and a 3rd. We were 3rd in Pro 10 but everyone said "you have to have a honda" So we built one. We will build whatever the customers and market want. Whatever the flavor of the month is. Racing will always be trendy.:)

No doubt about it Darren and Mark are flying fast. Only a couple hours behind the overall at this years 1000. He started waaaay back and had too pass a lot of people and deal with a lot more dust. Top 10 with an aircooled VW. Not the most trendy, probably not even a carbon fiber dash. Just straight go fast and forget the flash. Gotta say that really appeals to me. Think about finishing 2 hours behind Robby with a VW aircooled engine, I mean sit there and let that sink in for a while. WOW!! that's what I call a Desert Assassin!

What is the horsepower difference between the Honda and the VW? If the air cooler makes more torque, how much?
nimrod
January 30th, 2007, 15:00
You gotta PM Darren for that. I know they have more torque but less top end. I don't know exact numbers. Plus, he was so slow that he was the Score class champion and finished 1 hour and 35 minutes behind the Herbst Truggy at the 1000. Wow! that is sooo slow. I wonder if Larry Roesler knows he was only a hour and a half away from being slow?

I agree 100%...I am just a garage fabricator (bajabug). But added to what you listed I summit machines, tools and other shop costs. Not many blacksmiths under shade trees in the race car building business. Never let a lumber guy tell you how much it should cost they are all living in a fantasy world.

Fortin's car is very fast !!!! Plus has a stellar resume. How many cars are for sale today with multiple overall Baja 1000 wins? If I were in the market for a used 10 car, I would be talking to Fortin!
I've been asked many times about the HP of our V-Dub and the performance specs. Truefully, I don't know! We never dyno tested it to find out. The water cooled motors have more "HP" than us I'm sure. But, we have a different aproach and didn't design our program around max horse power. For our race program it is all about traction, balance, & gearing.
I believe the real test is on the race course, not the dyno machine. At San Felipe last year I pushed a Honda powered car up hill in a sand wash for 100 yards, so I guess we had more power that at least one Honda!
As far as cost go....racing is expensive!
Superfab
January 31st, 2007, 09:40
It doesn't take max hp to win a race. A good light consistent car like Darrens has an excellent chance of winning every race. They drive smarter...not harder. Many of the high hp cars get driven way too hard all the time. Sometimes having a little less hp makes you think more when you drive. You tend to not overdrive the car and tear up stuff. Plus a properly built light car is easier on many of its components. Having a clean consistent run is usually the key to winning. Kreger said it best about the costs. Shop rates and materials costing what they are plus people think stuff just falls together. Building the chassis isn't the expensive part, mounting all the little things and making the package clean and easy to work on takes time and thought. And time is money!
