im going to san felipe and cant go where i need to be in my stock 2wd toyota. im thinking of grabing a rental (more then likely a jeep or somthing). anyone have experiance with this?
obviously you have to keep it on the DL that your taking it to mexico, but if i buy Mex insuerance does Enerprise get anything saying Mex insurance was purchased for it? i dont really want to travel down without the coverage...

also if i tell the rental company i need a 4wd do they ask alot of questions?

anything im not thinking of that i should consider?

I have experience in that field....as I know of people doing this all the time.

They don't ask questions if you ask for 4wd so no worries there and if they do perhaps you are going into the mountains and expect snow. Often rentals also come with no car registration and some Mexican border Insurance places refuse coverage because they suspect that you are taking a rental illegally into Mexico, but there are plenty of insurance places that take just a VIN.

Get every rental insurance option there is as it makes it easy to return a car with obvious offroad damage.

When returning make an extra sweep to make sure you have no Mexican grocery or toll-road receipts laying around.

Some cars can be taken into Mexico legaly and you can avoid some of the above listed workarounds if you ask them ahead of time. You might be able to purchase Mex-Insurance from then at the time of rental. This might be more true for San Diego rental places. ymmv

when my truck was stolen I rented a car at enterprise I told them I needed to go into Mexico, they told me I needed to buy the insurance they provided and not to try to buy mexican insurance from other agencies. They said they would not cover me even with the other mexican insurance. The insurance they provided was also expensive but having to pay for a rental car is more expensive.

There are certain cars they do not allow to go into Mexico. Usually the ones that are popular by car theives which rent them and drive them to Mexico never to return, escalades, jeeps, etc... And usually 4x4's.

;) I rented a JEEP from a place called Baja Car Rental. Phone number is 619-470-7368. It came with Mexican insurance. It was the week before the Baja 1000 last year and I had not yet done my pre-running. I told them I was going down to drop off things at the orphanage (that part was true). I returned the car clean and with two new tires, got lost on the way and ended up hitting a rock on Old Puertocitos road. (That's my story and I'm stick'in with it).
Cost a little more than I had expected but I knew my section of the course when the time came and the children at Malcolm's orphanage got some new clothes.
And thats all I have to say about that...

We took a little saturn car to erendira last baja 500. Got it from budget, I let them know we were taking it to mex and they gave me some extra paperwork to take along. They charged us like an extra 15 bucks for that.
Make sure you get the insurance. Word of caution though, read the policy very carefully. While waiting to return the car, I started reading through the policy and found out that while most of the car was covered, the windshield wasnt. Thankfully we had an uneventful trip and everything was intact. Good luck.

I rented a 4wd Excursion from that place to take to mexico. Other places do legit baja rentals as well (one that I used to use is now gone). Keep in mind that the mexican insurance you get from the car rental place in the states will cover the car while it's in mexico, but is likely not valid in mexico for liability. You need mexican liability insuance issued from a company setup in mexico to offer this. If you get in an accident without legit mexican liability insurance from mexico, it could be big trouble especially if there is an injury or death involved. When I last rented a 4x4 to take to mexico the insurance they offered was not mexican liability insurance, it was insurance to cover the car after you got home but the lady at the rental desk did not understand the difference. Just beware.

I rented a truck from a place called rent4less (www.rent4less.com) in San Diego for last years B1K.
I know the name sounds kinda cheesy but I would rent from them again. They offered (required) the Mex insurance and they knew I was taking the truck South of San Felipe (Gonzaga Bay).
I rented a 2WD F150 but they also had Jeeps, H2's and a couple of other SUV/4WDs to choose from.

I have rented a 4x4 explorer from Hertz in San Diego (airport location) - it was about $75.00/day with insurance including mexican insurance. I told them up front that I was taking the vehicle to mexico and I needed a 4x4. It was a nice explorer too - had about 2000 miles on it.

I've done this twice, I always get an older hunk of junk. first one was a Geo Metro, and it pretty much got thrashed since we took it down past Puertocitos, ended up going through two or three tires a radiator and needed some bodywork in Burger King parking lot before I returned it but gosh dam ned we got our $20 a day worth out of that thing!
Don't remember what the last one we got was, some 4 door sedan, got it stuck near Borrego and luckily Klaus came to the rescue.
I'm always upfront about where I will be taking it and am happy to pay the insurance.

I heard a story a few years back, of a now TT team that uses this site regularly, they rented a couple of new at the time 4x4 expiditions, got the rental insurance, and took those thing pre-running for the 1000, hard pre-running, driving it like a rental pre-running, in Baja. You can only imagine that the things were damn near totaled by the time they got back to the rental company. No problems on the return.

Renter insurance is great..........they told me, "all you have to do is return the keys". All i was thinking was, you just said that to the wrong dude.

A friend of mine has done that twice. Brought them the keys since he actually lost the car. Gave them the keys and left.
