Sorry flat billers its not a sicky gnar Jeep but my girls '98 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 has been losing power on the road. She just rolls to the side and gets it towed somewhere that tells her they need more details before they can do anything. The electricity(radio, gauges) stay on when the motor goes off but I don't know if that neccesarily means that the battery-alternator are ok. Where would you start looking for gremlins? I'll get more info from her but I'm thinkin I'll start looking for bad ground connections. Any ideas are welcome.

What kind of things would make a truck completely lose power, but then drive away from the shop?

I had the same problem once with a yota. Thier were some wires that kept hitting the cat back and popping the fuse. Just my .02

My jeep does the same thing you drive and it dies you leave it an hour and its ok. I swaped the standard fan attached to the engine for aftermarket ones and this sorted it out. I know that the engine will switch off if it thinks its being over worked. Also air mass meter will do the same thing get that checked or replaced. Failing that jeepforum. lol.

Jarvis is your signature an ali-g kickback?

Thanks man that is helpful. She got it towed twice now but at the shop nothing seemed to be wrong. Are you telling me that you switched from the mechanical fan to electric or just replaced the stock mechanical fan blade. What would the mass air flow meter be telling the car that is wrong and also how can that meter be checked short of installing a new one and seeing what happens?
Thanks again

Yes its a Ali-G quote i have been busted i knew sum one would get it now im gunna have to change it.

Im not a jeep expert all i know is that the little computer people that live in my car dont like it somtimes and turn the car off. There are NO mechanics where i live in the middle east so i had to manualy go found trying to fix things. I replaced the stoke blade with an electric one. The engine was not overheating but this seemed to fix it for a long time. Then i accidently drove it for a trip without the filter attached opps. And a load of sand got in and this kept killing the engine. When the sensor was removed it ran fine. You have to options replace AMM or just do what i did and unplug and tape off not good for the engine but with the way i brive mine i dont think its gunna last long anyway.

If i was you take it to a dealer get them to do a check that cant cost much you dont have to get the work done by them or even at all. Failing that by a trailer so you can go and pick ur gf up and then ull be her superman. lol.

when it dies the first thing id check is fuel pressure. if thats in spec then id be looking at an ignition related issue, crank sensor somethink like that.

moabwalker & jarvis ...I had the same problem w/my jeep prerunner...its so simple you want to kill yourself
not 100% sure because you have a different engine but on mine it was the crank position sensor($24)...i spent weeks tring to figure it out and finally some old guy told me to change it and sho nuf...problem solved...i keep the old one as a spare/reminder
if that doesnt work go to the jeepspeed.com forum those guys really know jeeps
good luck

I was having power issues with my 98 Grand Cherokee and all it needed was a tune-up. Everything has been ok for about a year now.

Thanks everybody. I made a list of things I'll go through but she's talkin about sellin it. I don't really blame her but if it doesn't die anymore maybe she'll live with it and I'll be the hero. Ha thanks again.

jarvis btw I read an article on line a while back about a guy who had a cherokee project in the middle east...he was trying to get the most power out of it he could(i-6) I cant remember the article or the web site but i will track it down ...the dude knew jeeps, i think he ended up with some thing like 270hp at the wheels ...but he did do some major building to the motor....but all easilly accomplished...I think it was a stroker motor with some jacobs add on's
