Michael Waltrip Charged After Vehicle Accident Saturday: #55-Michael Waltrip is charged with reckless driving and failure to report an accident after a crash on Molly's Backbone Road in Catawba County. The Highway Patrol says Waltrip was driving about 70 miles per hour in the 55 mile-per-hour zone when he went off the right side of the road in a curve around 1:50 a.m. Saturday. His car then traveled back across the pavement and off the left side of the roadway, sliding sideways and striking a utility pole as it overturned. The car then rolled over and came to a rest on its side. Troopers said a witness saw Waltrip crawl out of the vehicle and leave the scene. When a trooper went to his home around 2:30 a.m. no one was there, but when he went back at 8 p.m. he found Waltrip, who admitted he'd fallen asleep at the wheel. Waltrip, with scratches on his face and some deep cuts on his finger, spoke with Eyewitness News about the crash. He said he was on his way home to Sherill's Ford from Charlotte. "I was almost home. I relaxed a little bit and ran off the road," he explained. "I woke up with gravel hitting the car and I tried to correct but it was too late. The seasoned driver says he instinctively got out of his car, and then decided to walk home because he often runs the route and was only a mile away. Waltrip will be in court in Newton on May 14.(WSOCTV.com)(4-10-2007)

From Jayski.com
UPDATE: Michael Waltrip was uninjured in a single car accident Friday night near his home in Sherrills Ford, N.C. The 43-year old was returning from Charlotte, N.C. when he fell asleep at the wheel within a mile of his home and ran off the road, striking a telephone pole. “I am really embarrassed about the accident, but I feel fortunate that I wasn’t hurt,” said Waltrip. “For 25 years I have had a great driving record. I consider myself to be a courteous and safe driver on public roads. I never expected to fall asleep behind the wheel of a car.” The North Carolina Highway Patrol ticketed Waltrip for reckless driving (admitting to falling asleep at the wheel) and failure to notify authorities of an accident in a timely manner.(Waltip PR)(4-10-2007)
I love the "for 25 years I have had a great driving record" Apparently he is referring to off the track where there are speed limits and he his well within his element, traveling at a snail's pace.
I can tell you this, reckless driving is often charged when alcohol is involved, but levels are too low to charge DUI, or when alcohol is likely involved, but the driver leaves the scene- Seriously, had he wrecked close to his home, I could see walking home and calling police, but to walk a mile after wrecking at 70mph takes some motivation- FEAR! He wanted nothing to do with talking to the po-po that night.

Of course this clown was drinking. There would be no reason to ditch the scene of the accident if he wasent. A witness saw him bailing from the car. And the police went to his house and he was not there! Where was he? If he was still walking they would have found him. Whats his explaination for not being there. He said it was only a mile from his house. And if POS did walk home why did he not call the police to let them know he was in a single car wreck and he is ok and the car need to be towed. Oh Ya because drunk people dont think clearly! And the reason they cant bust him for alcohal is the officer went to his house and he was not there and then returned at 8pm. The accident happend around 1:50 am. The officer went to his house at 2:30am and then returned at 8pm. Theres no way they could do a alcohal test on him 16 1/2 hours later. POS knew he "F"ed up and he was hiding out. Where was Buffy and his daughter at 2:30am that they could not hear the police knocking on the door? I hope someone at where ever he was ratts his butt out!
And about what DW will say is he will talk about how glad he was that POS was driving a safe Toyota when he crashed. And he will say that the Toyota is what saved POS's life. He will spin this to make Toyota look good. It's what the Waltrips do. "They sit and spin!"

From The Associated Press at 10:48 PM Eastern Time
SHERRILL'S FORD, N.C. (AP) -- Michael Waltrip has been charged with reckless driving and failing to report an accident after hitting a telephone pole and rolling his car about a mile from his home over the weekend.
Waltrip, who suffered scratches to his arms, hands and face and cuts on his finger, said he fell asleep at the wheel right before he wrecked his Toyota Land Cruiser early Saturday morning. He left the scene of the accident and walked the rest of the way home.
Police found him at his house several hours after finding the car at the accident scene.
"I am really embarrassed about the accident, but I feel fortunate that I wasn't hurt," the two-time Daytona 500 winner said Tuesday.
"For 25 years I have had a great driving record. I consider myself to be a courteous and safe driver on public roads. I never expected to fall a sleep behind the wheel of a car."
Police said the accident happened before 2 a.m. when Waltrip lost control of his SUV while driving around a curve and overcorrected. His car rolled and hit a utility pole, said Sgt. Brian Sharpe of the State Highway Patrol in Catawba County.
The vehicle, which was on its side, was abandoned and there was blood in it when police arrived. Witnesses reported seeing the driver crawl from the car and leave.
"He left the scene," Sharpe said. "We got the plate number, realized it was him and tried to locate him."
An attempt to locate him that morning was unsuccessful, but police reached him later Saturday. Waltrip was not arrested.
It's the latest troubles for Waltrip, who is having a horrendous first season as a car owner.
He was caught cheating during Daytona 500 preparations when NASCAR found a fuel additive in his engine, and was docked a record 100 driver points. His crew chief was fined a record $100,000 and suspended indefinitely, as was his competition director.
Meanwhile, he has failed to qualify for the five races since the 500.
Dale Jarrett, who drives one of Waltrip's cars, has needed a provisional to make five of the six races this year and is currently 37th in the points. David Reutimann, his other driver, has failed to make two races and is 43rd in points.

I think it's one thing to wish him the worst of luck on the track, but outside the track is different. I kinda feel bad for the guy.
Glad to see he's ok physically, as far as him drinking and driving? I'd say yes and he doesn't deserve any sympathy for that.

Good points. He is under a microscope right now in a very bad way. He also has a wife and kids at home. That being said, a little common sense with the issues he has had this past season would have kept him from having the issues he has had. If there was nobody at the scene, (which we now know there was) and if he was in the middle of nowhere, leave a note with info on it for the police to find. As far as cheating goes, do not cheat. Those two things would have saved him alot of stress. I have a hard time feeling sorry for a guy who uses the media to attack others he may not agree with and then is caught trying to cheat and evade situations that the "commoner" would have to stand up and be responsible for under normal circumstances

Yeah, just ask Scott Peterson about that......Death penalty for all circumstancial evidence. I realize they are two compeltely different issues, and are not comparable as far as the crimes committed, but the court of public opinion had him guilty before he stepped foot in a court. Mikey's circumstancial evidence looks pretty damning.

Witness Surprised Waltrip Survived Crash
By JENNA FRYER 04.11.07, 8:43 PM ET
The witness who discovered Michael Waltrip's overturned car initially thought no one survived the accident until the NASCAR driver wiggled out the back window.
The witness, an 18-year-old college student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, requested anonymity during a phone interview Wednesday with The Associated Press for fear of reprisal from Waltrip's fan base.
But she said she lives near the two-time Daytona 500 winner in Sherrill's Ford, and stumbled upon the accident when she was returning home around 2 a.m. Saturday. She saw an overturned Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people ) Land Cruiser in a ditch and rushed over to check on the occupants. She didn't see anyone in the car and no one answered her shouts, so she called 911 for help.
"After I got off the phone I was walking around the car again and somebody stuck their foot out the back driver side of the window," she said. "That's when Michael Waltrip got out. He wiggled out the back window. I knew immediately it was him. He just got out the back driver side window and stood up."
The witness said she asked Waltrip how long he'd been in the car and he told her about 10 minutes.
"He was bleeding from his forehead and had some cuts on his fingers and arms," she said. "I told him `You are really lucky you are alive. I didn't think anybody was alive in there.' We sort of talked for a minute or two, and I told him 911 was on the way, and he just turned around and started walking home.
"I didn't know what to say or what to do. He had a T-shirt and sweat pants and socks on, he might have taken his shoes off in the car, but I wasn't sure. And he just turned around and started walking home in his socks."
Waltrip was charged Saturday evening with reckless driving and failing to report an accident, both misdemeanors. He told police he fell asleep the wheel and woke up to find his car overturned in the gravel.
Waltrip has a May 14 court date in Newton on the charges.
NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said NASCAR would talk with Waltrip on Friday in Texas.
Waltrip had a scheduled interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, but a representative, Brooke (nasdaq: BXXX - news - people ) Hondros, canceled it, saying Waltrip wasn't feeling well.
But in an interview with The Charlotte Observer, he said he was embarrassed for leaving the scene.
"I just feel stupid," he told the newspaper. "I feel like an idiot because this one is all me."
State trooper B.L. Buchanan said he arrived on the scene to find the wrecked SUV - which had also hit a telephone pole - but no Waltrip. He said he went to Waltrip's home to speak to him around 3 a.m., but was unsuccessful in locating the driver.
Hondros said Waltrip was showering in his pool house and didn't hear the police when they arrived.
Buchanan said his shift ended at 5 a.m., and he finally made contact with Waltrip at 8 p.m. Saturday when he returned to duty and Waltrip called him. The officer met him at Waltrip's home and issued the citation.
Waltrip told The Observer alcohol did not contribute to the accident.
"I didn't go home to avoid anything," he said. "I just went there trying to figure out what to do."
Waltrip is having a rough first year as a car owner.

Here is a link to a news station that did a story on Michaels wreck and there are five pictures of the truck taken by a witness to the accident. And from what the 18 year old girl said about how she thought he was dead and then he just climbed out the window. She then said I have called 911 and then Michael just started walking home! You have to wonder if he was trully impared and maybe it was not alcohal. He could have been on something else if you know what I mean.

It just occurred to me that if Toyota deems this MWR's (also known as POS Inc.) "third strike", he might have trouble dumping his team. Typically, people sell teams/points for money- If he is still negative on car points and he loses his team, he might have to move out of his pool house and rent it out to afford to pay someone to take the negative points. Man, this could get ugly.

The Michael Waltrip story gets more and more odd as more reports come out. We all know the story by now-DW's little brother wrecks his Toyota Land Cruiser at 2AM; walks home in his socks, showers in his bath house and is not around to be interviewed by the police until 8PM that night.
A lot of this sounds strange. I can understand walking home, I guess, but I wonder where his shoes were. Driving in his socks? I guess. Cops come by his house at 3AM and they can't find him because he is in his bath house showering. Sounds odd. I guess he didn't want to wake Buffy and the kids; maybe he lost his keys in the accident. I guess it could happen. Made no effort to locate his car? Didn't try to talk to the police? Police had to track him down at 8PM to talk with him? Hard to explain that one.
Some things he may have told the 18 year old witness.
-The #55 NAPA/Dominos Toyota Land Cruiser blew a right front.
-The #55 NAPA/Dominos Toyota Land Cruiser was loose all night; I just lost it.
-Something broke in the #55 NAPA/Dominos Toyota Land Cruiser.
-I had a great car. My crew did a get job getting the #55 Toyota Land Cruiser ready to drive. I was doing great until that dummy Robby Gordon in the 7 car turned down on me and took me out.
Seriously. I'm glad Mikey is okay. I do think there is more to the story than we have heard or that Michael is telling. It has been a hard few months for him and I hope that this was just a case of him falling asleep at the wheel and not a case of drinking too much and (foolishly) getting behind the wheel of a car.

Michael Waltrip What he may have told the witness.

It is good to see him not seriously hurt after that crash, fun to make fun of him, but not fun to see the guy hurt. It really could be a sign of stress, and he really could be cracking under all the pressure, anybody with the self induced crapstorm that he has been through might be in danger of the same thing. Big time stress causes odd things to happen to people.

Boy it sure seems like he is self destructing. I'm no where near feeling sorry for him but I sure don't wish any harm on him.

I belive it was the #7 Hummer that spun him.;)

I heard they found an empty 6 pack and some drug Paraphernalia in the back of the car. that came from a good source.

I'm sure Fox/speed/nascar/Toyota will make this all go away after this weekend. This is just as damaging to Nascar as it is to Toyota. Nascar doesn't want one of thier poster boys being associated with a DUI.So I'm sure they will sweep it under the rug and act like it never happen. On the other hand, I wonder if he will be on "inside Nextel" this Monday?

i missed the race. what did DW say about POS?
It was joketastic. You woulda thought OPOS was running for Congress. I just caught a snippet in the pre-race show. Chris Myers (?) did the little blurb about what happened and turned to DW and asked, "You're his brother, what has he said?" To which DW replied: I think he may be spread a little thin- Owners have responsibilities and drivers have responsibilities... and he has work to do in his organization....and whole lot more of nothing about the question asked....
And that was basically a summary of the 10 seconds of air it got. That and the fact that Nascar met with POS.

DW's words were; " I spoke to Mike and I think Mikey finally realizes being an owner and a driver is just too big of a suitcase for him to carry".
It's not like Ol'DW is going to be very supportive of him. Afterall when DW tried to be an owner/driver he couldn't make it work either... Soooooooo Ol'DW may actually be loving this too.

They will probably use this as an oppertunitt for him to step out of the drivers seat and concentrate on being an owner.

"Due to the recent events which have occured, I feel that I am spread to thin to do the job necessary as both a driver and owner of MWR. Therefore, effective the day after Dale Jarret uses up his final Past Champions Provisional, I am designating Bill Elliot as the Driver of the #55 Napa Auto Parts Camry so I can focus solely on the issues facing me in court and with my ownership of MWR. WHen our Toyota Teams do become competetive or when Bill uses up all of his Past Champion Provisionals, which ever comes first, I will kick him to the curb like a used up ally cat and drive the #55 once again. If we are not competetive at that point, I will use another past champion, Darrell Waltrip and ride his coat tails yet again to get one of my cars into a race, or at least 6 races. We have recently signed driver developement contracts with the following.......Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Cale Yarborough and Ned Jarret, all former Nascar Champions. We will keep them on staff and use them on an as needed basis. Thank you to Toyota, Napa Auto Parts, UPS, Dominoes and Burger King for your loving support of my little ole race team. Buffy and I sure do appreciate it. And whoever was driving that Black H3 with the funny green writing on it that pushed me into that telephone pole was, I saw you, even though no body else did, I saw you and I know you pushed me into that pole." I think they might bring it up. I don't think they will let the fans down and brush it under the rug. Talking about it will help the show's rating. Its what the fans want to hear about.

Yeah I was surprized... Not bad at all... Did you see his hands> they were pretty scratched up... Did you also notice his hair was way down over his right forehead? I'm sure that must have been covering a nice rasberry too. I would have loved to be in that Thursday NAPA meeting....

I'm sure that the Napa meeting was an *** ripping session. Don't be shocked if he's on his best behavior from now on. He handled everything fine, but I still don't think there's a chance in hell that POS will drive more than 4 races this year. Too many other teams have had the track time to learn with. DJ is the fastest of the bunch, and he runs in the 30's consistently. I see Toyota pulling their stakes and going to another team.

Vickers is the best Toyota... 3 races and he is the highest Toy in points. He has had all decent runs.

I agree. THe races that he can actually qualify for, Vickers has been strong. His teammate Almendinger however, not so hot, in stock cars anyways. I see him leaving Nascar and "working" towards replacing Scott Speed in F1. It may take a little time, but Almendinger's calling is in open wheel.

You look at the guys around Vickers in the standings and none of them can compete like him when they make the races. He's got to get himself locked in the 35.
Wonder why they qualify so bad...

I used to race at Cajon Speedway ans I can say that qualifing is a completely differant animal. I couldn't qualify to save my life but have won some races.

No way, the window in F1 is only open for a micro second and AJ missed that a while back. AJ will make it work in Nascar but it will take time. He is actually doing good considering the difference in experience between Vickers and AJ.

if anytime the window in F1 will be open at the end of this year. Sure red bull is a back of the feild team in F1, but Scott Speed isnt that good, and always crashes. I had hope for him in the past but not anymore. If they were to give Scott Speed the boot I really think allmandinger or a few others would have a chance.

No way, I disagree. Almendinger is in the Red Bull Pipeline and they have 4 cars with Red Bull and Toro Roso in F1. And he has been horrible in Cup so far. He is young enough, He has the talent, and he can drive the wheels off of an open wheel car. Do not be suprised one bit if you here about him doing a test or a step up program in the next year to 2 years. The window can not close on him if it has not yet opened. My fathers company does some developement work for the Ferrari F1 team. And they even know who AJ is and speak highly of him. They also wonder why he is trying this "silly stock car thing".

Almendinger has made it very clear that his goal is F1.What better chance does he have then filling a seat for Redbull? Yeah it's neckcar, but they also own an F1 program! It's very hard for these open wheel guys to get use to the weight of a cup car! I'm sure he won't be too much of a story this year but, like RGFan said, you will be hearing of him doing some F1 stuff hear soon!

I hope you guys are right but I have my doubts. AJ has a great personality for Na$car and I am sure would eventually do well with A team Toyota equipment. F1 is so political (although this year is a breath of fresh air) that I would hate to see him go over there and run around the back for a couple of seasons but then again, it is F1. Even the backmarkers are big racing mojo.
