Check with the tracks, they usually know of people or they have their own to rent but they may want you to take a class with that fast of a kart. See ekartingnews.com for a listing of tracks. There is a guy with So Cal Sprinters that rents karts in the American Sportsman class for race weekends. He had three rented last race and may have something available. PM me if you are interested.

Don't know if you've ever been there, but check out dromo1 in Orange. Also K1speed in Irvine is tons of fun as well.

PM sweetdevil (rhiannon) she used to run one of the karting organizations or something like that. she might be able to point you in a good direction so you can get in a higer end kart.

I dont think Dromo1 or K1 are quite what everyone says they are. they are only fun cause its only $25 to play bumper cars with something cooler then the family fun center cars.

Speaking of karting.....here are some pics from the last Pro Kart Challenge race. It was held at California Speedway at the CalSpeed Nuevo track.

Mazda just came on board as the title sponsor. Scott Speed's dad and mom have been at every race this year. They are in the black CRG clothes...I believe in the second or third pic standing on the grandstands. Karting kicks *** and more people should get involved. It is a very mentally, physically, and mechanically challenging.

My kart is the # 7x First Kart ICC.

Hey Dom, let's just buy one. I don't want the challenge of racing... I want to "go fast and take chances" for the fun of it.

Anyone been out to the relatively new indoor Kart track in Corona? Over near Eibach?

Aloha

Yeah, that is Pole Position, a lot of fun and a cool place to check out. They have a lot of racing stuff on display....and they are building a new K1 track east of Ontario Mills.

Jeff - We need two karts to "Shake......and Bake"

So I went to FUll Throttle karts (1 block away):
~$7500 brand new, done deal for a TaG (electric starter, cent clutch) and I'm told not to do a brand new but rather a used one and redo/buy new motor.

Low Fric - Arrive and Drive whatever. I'll race, I'll play...I don't care "I wanna go fast"

Full Throttle Karting is a great shop. Andy knows his stuff. He will guide you in the right direction. Andy is big on the Rotax series which is a better engine for reliability than a Tag....12,000 rpm vs 17,000 rpm.

If you know how to ride a dirt bike I would say get a shifter. A tag car may become boring to you. Most the kart guys think a shifter is tiring, but all of us that came from dirt bikes know that there is nothing more tiresome than a long set of gnarly whoops. Shifting a go kart is rather easy. You dont even use the clutch to shift.

Dangit Dom, it's a shifter Kart or nothing!

Time to start hitting up the Kart classifieds. I came pretty close to buying a Kart a few years ago but nobody in my circle wanted to do the same.

Just call me Mike Honcho...

Tried to go to Adams to drive a friends TaG and HPV. As soon as we got to Riverside it started pouring rain. Beaumont and Perris were raining/hailing as well.

Went to K1 in Irvine to take out my aggression. K1 has electric karts and is way more fun than Dromo. Those little electric karts are perfect for the short/indoor track.

If you go with tag go with the rotax. The motors are strong, the only weak part is the starter, they need to be rebuilt every couple of races. The rotax is competitive with the other tag motors it just makes power in different rpm and will be geared accordingly. If you go with a shifter stay away from icc, go with a stock 125 and replace the top end periodically

Ahhhh....the old debate about moto or ICC.

Read this post if you want to see what karters have to say regarding this topic:

I'm reffering to just the weekend warrior that goes out to perris or adams and burnes laps. I have no problem at all with icc motor package, at least are orginizations are in line with CIK, but even with both motors being stock u cant tell me engine parts for a 99 cr are going to be the same price as a TM or pavessi. Now if there race motors there guna be money pit either way and it will be a never ending argument between icc and moto.

A few years ago I was looking into getting into Karting part time between off-road races, and what's nice is it is something you can do without having to have a whole team and support behined you. I was looking at all the differant classes and the one I felt was the best was the TAG / Rotax class. The reason is there pretty much a spec class. You dont need to worry about racing part time or just for fun and having some guy dump a ton of money into his motor or kart, making you uncompetitve. The Rotax class your Kart has to meet a min weight, spec fuel, and there are 2 or 3 tire choices to choose from. The motors are sealed and tagged and must only be worked on by an authorized dealer. Also I found that most guys were getting about 2 seasons on their motors and a complete rebuild was only about $1,100. Way cheap comparied to my 1600 motor! A full set of wheels and tires were around $300. They main reason I have not done it yet was here in San Diego SDKA (San Diego Karting Assoc.) raced at Cajon Speedway and when that got closed they lost there place to race. Currently they are racing at the Stadium and I'm not sure if I'm really into parking lot racing. I know there are some tracks in North County and LA, but I was looking for something close that I could go to and not have to drive all over to do. Now I did hear that there were talks about Borona Reservation looking into building some sort of track neer the drag strip / dirt track. Also If you are looking to get into this I talked with the guys at Acceleration Karting in Vegas. They know about Rotax and they have a track there so they could fit you to your Kart. Also they were saying since I live in Cal and if I bought it out of state then I would not have to pay sales tax.

I love the fact that karting is so cheap too! You can show up the day of the race as a one man show, win a race, and drive home that same evening.

The Pro Kart Challenge Series seems to have found the best compromise between cost/driver skill/speed. They have a novice and expert class for each of their three motor packages: TAG, Stock Moto, and Unlimited.

Everyone has to run the same tire compound which is handed out the morning before the race....so no tire doping. The fuel is spec and tested after each heat/main if you finish in the top three. ANd every class has a minimum weight.

Then there is the stock moto class....1997 six speed CR125 bottom end (must be completely stock) with you selection of 1997-2001 STOCK CR 125 cylinders and heads. Everything must be stock in the motor...you cant even run a wiseco piston or Hot Rods Con Rod. STOCK GENUINE HONDA EVERYTHING

If you win the main event you better be prepared to hang out in tech while they take your cylinder off and completely check your motor.

But for the weekend warrior who does not race....get in the seat and drive whatever has a motor, steering wheel, and a seat. It's just whether or not you value a shifter kart (Front & Rear brakes and a gearbox) or a TAG kart (Rear Brakes Only and no gearbox).

I believe in the Rotax class you can now run front brakes. I know SDKA has allowd the front brakes per CIK rules, but you must add wieght to your kart. But your so right about showing up the day of the race as a one man show, race all day, and drive home that same evening. The times I have gone down to watch the only time you might need some help is getting your kart on the stand, unless you have one of those tilt and pull up kart stands.

Right on! I did not know that about having the front brakes in Rotax. I know that a couple chassis builders were making special chassis for the DD2 motor, but I did not know they had front brakes. The DD2 Rotax is a two speed also...so it is begining to sound like a hybred TAG/Shifter setup. I heard one run at Moran and that sucker BARKS! It makes a real crisp deep BOOORRRRAAAAP on acceleration....a lot different than the Leopard's high whining Beeeeerrrraapppp.......if that makes sense.
