Very impressive! I've had many lengthy conversations with people regarding the potential of a bell crank and hope to see more of them in the near future. I would like to know Jason reasoning behind the design. Is it strictly the benefit of an increaing motion ratio or is there more, such as the reaction force caused by the shock force changing the overall handling of the vehicle? Also curious, what is the motion ratio at full bump, unless thats secret. Again amazing craftsmanship and design; anti roll bar incorporated into the bell crank pivot, genius!

I will say this, when we changed the back of our old Class 8 truck from quarter-elliptical to coilover, it totally changed the handling of the truck. The quarter-ellip setup would have a similar reaction to the chassis as the setup on this buggy. I preferred the way the truck handled with the quarter-ellip setup. I can't wait to hear the feedback on the handling of this. I think it is very cool that someone is finally incorporating this into a buggy.

No that was a piece of 4130 we machined up that is similar to the center section in our 2.25 hubs for the bearing races etc. to work with the rocker setup.

Kinetik Internal By-Pass shocks. :)

How do these Kinetik I/B shocks differ performance wise from say a 2.5 c/o & 2.5 by-pass or even a 3.0 by-pass? Like the ideas on this car!!!

Jerry Zaiden
June 8th, 2010, 21:07
The internal by-pass has its advantages. In this car there is only 1 shock per wheel and has over a 3" diameter piston. There is no way to mount 2 shocks per wheel on this car with its features. I would say the internal by-pass shock would work better than a 2.5" coilover and a 2.5" by-pass. These shocks are very similar to the shocks on the Riviera TT, Goodman's Bronco, etc... one of the smoothest ridding off road vehicles in the rough I have been in was Goodman's Bronco. Simply amazing! Great slow speed control and able to handle the bumps very well.

Looks cool Jerry.

I built a rocker rear suspension on my buddies on his '54 Ford truck, hot rod. The picture attached shows it, NOTE: the frame is up-side-down. And the sjock will be converted to a C/O airshock so that it will ride good but have some load carrying capacity.

What is the deal on the IBS's. Will you be making 4.0's?

Jerry Zaiden

As for these shocks they are 3.5" shocks and we are not building them to sell them. Just for some personal projects.

Thats cool Jerry. I made some 3.5 external bypasses about 4 years ago. They have welded top caps that look like yours. It was a ton of work. I made enough parts for 10 shocks but only used them for 8 bypasses so I would have spares. They work very good! I did consider making an external 4" can that would slide over the 3.5" body for an internal bypass shock... But like I said it was a ton of work.

I forgot about the patents.. You might want to accually look the patents up because I'm pretty sure no matter how it was done, (regardless of the years) it is patented. If your not selling them then the point is mute except that you will get some mileage out of this. Your," quality and modern custom parts" In shock production might explain every one elses failures in racing and your success.

I do not see many failures in these shocks on the teams that run them. They are quite simple when you know how they work and from what I have seen and ridden in they work quite well. Roger Normans truck runs the same type of shock and is at the top of the game he owns one of my favorite trucks. Goodman's Bronco runs them and is the best ridding pre-runner I have been in. If I recall Fortin Jr. won the Baja 1000/2000 on the same type of shocks made by Sway-A-Way had all the fancy/crude parts in them as well. Also when I worked at Rod Millen Motorsports we built shocks like this back in the early 90's out of Bilstein and kuster parts. Not to mention these shocks were in use way back in the 80's way before my time building parts... So I really don't care, they are cool and I like them! :)

And you are right it is a mute point as we are not into selling them anyways....

Well as of 1am tonight is started and ran on its own for the first time. Jason's gotta finish up a few things so he can get it down to Turn Key and put it on the chassis dyno so they can tune the ECU a little and get it dialed in for Glamis in a few days.

The car was at Turnkey today getting the computer all mapped in, the car made 310 hp to the ground but has a Fields Automatic taking away a little power. Everything went really well on the dyno and Jason is putting his finishing touches on getting the car ready so his family can have some fun in Glamis this weekend. THe car will make it but is only 70% finished. I expect him to put just about the same effort in the final touches like paint, plating, and bling... lol Look for him and say high if you see him, you have to see this car in person it is fun to look at!

Really liking how this is turning out, especially the linkage and rear swaybar.

Well we got it buttoned up enough last night for Jason to take it out to Glamis. Thing sounds mean and looks scary fast in the parking lot haha. I would say it 70% there, still lots of work to be done, but he wanted to get it drive-able for the family to finally use. Lots of time and $$$ thrown at this ... mostly Jason's personal time after hours. Awesome to see his vision come to life of 5+ years ago.

Here is a little video of the car in action last week in Glamis. All in all the car works great out of the box. In the woops the car works insane. In the dunes Jason wants to make some inner cans with a larger bumpzone. The car/shocks work awesome and it rides like a Cadillac!
