I do not get as fired up about it. But it is a big piece of Americana. Years ago we would have it playing in the back yard on the radio...must be why I still think of it fondly. Anyways here is some info about pole day coverage.

Indianapolis 500 Time Trials on ABC and ESPN2 This Weekend: Drivers will run for the pole position for the 91st Indianapolis 500 this Saturday, and ABC and ESPN2 will have five hours of live coverage of time trials beginning at 12noon/et. ESPN2 will have more than three additional hours of live coverage of the second day of Indianapolis 500 time trials on Sunday. Saturday’s coverage of Pole Day begins on ESPN2 at noon for two hours. After an hour off, coverage will resume on ABC at 3pm/et and continue until 6pm/et returning to ESPN2 from 6-7pm/et. On Sunday, ESPN2’s coverage begins at 12noon/et and runs for two hours, then resumes from 5-6:30pm/et. The 2007 running of Indy 500 from famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway marks the 43rd year of coverage of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” by ABC, the second longest-running relationship between a TV network and a major sports property. Only CBS and The Masters have been together longer. ABC and ESPN2’s coverage of Indianapolis 500 time trials will also be on the air the weekend of May 19-20, including coverage of Bump Day on Sunday, May 20.(ESPN PR)(5-8-2007

No matter what it still is INDY and as I said last year I grew up with up and every year I'll still watch it. I think I'm rooting for Michael Andretti.

We have a local SoCal driver racing the Indy 500 this year. His Dad, Garrett Giebler owner of G-Factory karting shop, installed my new seat in my shifter kart.

Here's the write up from Ekartingnews.com:

What a difference a year can make. Roughly one year ago, Phil Giebler was preparing for a Stars of Karting event at New Castle Motorsports Park, enroute to a Eastern Division championship. This weekend, the California native will be preparing for his IndyCar Series debut in the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 27. IndyCar.com just released the official news that Giebler has signed on with Playa Del Racing to team with veteran Jaques Lazier in the motorsports spectacle.

"It's the biggest race, the Super Bowl of racing. It's an amazing feeling," Giebler told Dave Lewandowski of IndyCar.com. "I've wanted to do this for years. I got the opportunity to do the Indy Pro Series car with Playa Del Racing, and we hit it off great. Everybody wanted to do the same thing – go to Indy. That really came up fast for me.”

Giebler won his inaugural Indy Pro Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2004, has twice competed in the Freedom 100 at the Speedway. He finished fifth in 2004 and 16th in '06. In two Indy Pro Series starts with Playa Del Racing this season, Giebler has a high finish of seventh – advancing 17 positions – on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla.

"It's been huge," Giebler said of his Indy Pro Series experience. "In racing, you could race anywhere in the world, but when you get to do it in front of the IndyCar Series owners, it's a chance to show them that you can get the job done. The cars aren't miles off; they're very similar, and you get to run the ovals. That's a big part of moving up to the IndyCar Series. Running the Indy Pro Series cars smoothed things out for me. I knew what to expect when I jumped in the IndyCar Series car. It was just a heck of a lot faster."

Giebler passed his Indy Racing League rookie test on April 23 at Kentucky Speedway. The 2004 Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by IndyCar ICA national champion has also competed in F3000 and has represented America in the A1GP series. The Oxnard, CA veteran will drive the No. 31 Playa Del Racing Panoz/Honda and is participating in the Rookie Orientation Program at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 6-7.

I'd add in the "soft" headgear as well, but I don't want to get banned for personal attacks..LOL

I don't get to excited about the 500 but,it is a good time around town. This is pretty much the only thing this state has to offer so it's a month long party. I will proboly swing by the track tomorrow and check out some laps!

I think that Tony George has absolutely screwed up the Indy 500. Starting it later in the day, locking the nascar guys out, hell the IRL for that matter. CART(Champ Car WOrld Series) and the IRL need to put aside their differences and get back together and race ovals, road coursed and street courses. I know the IRL is starting to do all 3, but they have not been able to shake the title of the "Triple A CART Series". Both series are struggling to have 20 race cars in their series. Put them together and 20 + 20 = 40 give or take. Now That is a series. Instead of trying to go head to head with Nascar, race on Saturday, be smart about it. I know I would start watching again.

Back to the 500, start this thing earlier, Tony Stewart sans 30 pounds, Robby, Casey, with the attention that they would bring, I think that would help matters alot..... Pole Day used to be huge, I would watch every year. Now, I did not even know it was today....The Indy 500 is bigger than Tony George and his ego, somebody needs to tell him that.

Sorry, just really loved watching the 500 and hate seeing what it has come to because of poor management. That goes for Open Wheel Indy Car Racing as well, both sides. They are tearing each other apart. Enough is enough already.

Just one fans perspective

I totally agree! He said his goal in the next 7 years is to make Indianapolis the racing capitol of the world again. He is trying to get all the teams to move to this location and bring some new form of racing to the speedway. Such as endurance races,AMA,Formula Ford/3000 and even tap into the import market with 1/4 mile and drifting events. He even mention maybe taking out the golf course to add some events. IMO,I don't see happing. Cart and IRL is a slowly dying breed. Americans can careless about F1.The import market around here is 5-7 years behind the rest of the world. Now the super bikes and Formula bikes would be huge here. I still wonder why they haven't made it here.

It breaks my heart to say I agree. I grew up with the Indy race being the pinnacle of motorsports and Cup was just something they did in the South. Of course that was 35plus years ago but it is the way it was. Indy drivers were household names. Now not the case. There may be some hope for the future though...the Cart chassis (Panoz I think) is the same chassis used in the A1 GP cars and, in my opinion, could be utilized by IRL to standardize both open wheel classes. Then some powerplant rethinking and maybe, just maybe, a combining of the series-well I can dream can't I?

The event is not what it was but I'm still drawn to it. I posted last year about indy 500 memories the thing I notice the most is my own lack of emotion. I used to get a lump in my throat when it went green, not anymore. Last years race was a good one for sure hope this one will be as good.

What was the deal with that start almost single file.

TK dosn't sound too happy about the restart...says more rain in 45mins.?

Should be good, go Marco Andretti!

ps...What a drag when they showed RG running out of gas on the last lap during the rain delay...biggest race in the world?

Dario wins it....Actually that was a pretty good race. I was worried about Marco, especially seeing him slide towards the grass upside down. No telling what could have happened if the car would have dug into the grass while upside down. The curse of Andretti continues.
