I'm looking for some opinions and advice on buying a new bike for me to ride with my 5 year old son. I haven't riden a motorcycle in about 20 years so I'd say I'm back to being a beginner. I'm 5'9" and weigh 190 lbs. I plan on riding a little bit on a track around my area that is more like a supercross track than say an outdoor national type of track or hare scrables. We'll also be riding in some fields and trails. I will not be racing competively or trying to do any triples. I'll be lucky to make any doubles. So, I've narrowed it down to these two bikes and wanted some other thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks.

erik

without a doubt if you're set on those two bikes go with the 230F! Not even a question... Are you looking to buy brand new? If used is an option possibly check out the honda XR250 line also. Very similar bike...

So why not a CRF250x? For your size the 150 is waaaay too small and the 230 is small and gutless compared to the 250.

I'm open to buying a used bike. I narrowed it down to these two because of price and power. Since I haven't riden in forever, I'm a little scared of the power of the 250x. :) I have a feeling that if I go down in power initially, I'm going to be bumming after I get my riding legs back so I'm torn.

Thanks.

There is nothing wild about the 250x.

forget those bikes, they're for people way smaller than you. Get a 250 or you'll get real bored real fast.

Lots of issues with what you want. I know trying to ride with kids or even adult beginners on a big bike with tall first gear etc gets really old. Trying to ride a supercross track on the two bikes you picked seems kind of dangerous too if you want to jump at all. If you go with a smaller bike dont expect to use it for much but transportation to help your kid learn and it will be more fun. Your kid will be faster than you in a couple years anyways no matter what you do.

If you are talking trails and fireroads with your 5 year old, the CRF 230 would be a great choice. The bike can put around at 2 mph.

The CRF 250X is a great all around that can serve you well on trails and the occasional track day.

The 250X is very hard to ride at 2 mph behind a 5 year old. It wants to go....

After a full day of riding, you'll be wishing you had more then one of those smaller bikes........its like.....riding........a.......bike! You'll get back into it quickly and will want more power, not that a 250 four stroke is a whole lot of power, its not, but its enough to really have fun with.

250X without a doubt, they certainly don't have too much power.

250x for sure!
the power is great and its not TOO fast
in addition, as u get better there is alot more aftermarket stuff for it
for your size a 150 is without a doubt to small and WAY too slow

If you want a little lighter bike, you can go with the 250R.

I have a 450R, its a handful.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I found a brand new from the dealer 2006 250x for 4900 out the door so I bought it today. Plus, I got a CRF50 for my son so now all we need to do is find the time to ride.
