I dig the fact that they are giving some love to Class 11. They are the true "Ironmen" of our sport.
This will likely deal a final death-blow to Class 10, but Class 12 should be incredible to watch next year.
It is great to see factory support like this; and they don't make pickups any longer.

Good question, but I think it would be ALL races
"Beginning in 2008, Volkswagen will offer a season-long contingency program for SCORE
International Off-Road racers competing in Volkswagen-powered vehicles. Funds totaling up to $100,000 will be available, including a special bonus for the highest points position finishing VW."
But that would leave 11's, 9's and 5-16 out of the points for the "highest points position finishing vw"...

We had Clark in a chase truck at the last 1000. Due to bad luck, he got the chance to go in on the course and observe us a couple of times repairing and retrieving a broken race car. He was so jazzed with the 11 and the 5 cars, he was like a kid in a candy store. Look! Look !! He kept saying pointing at cars and taking pics to show the VW guys back in Michigan. It was very cool seeing his enthusiasm for the sport.

Clark announced that this year's SCORE Baja 1000 Class 11 Winner will take home $9,000 dollars from VW. That rocks!
Sal said,"Eric hasn't won $9,000 in his entire career racing Class 11."
I can see the dust coming off some Class 11's, Class 9's and 5/1600's right now-
SCORE-Lite may be the one of the best classes in 2008...
Many thanks to VW for stepping up huge this year and especially next year!

Actually, If you read closely the top 3 finishers in Class 11 will split the $ 9,000.
That's still really good.
Hopefully, soon we could be racing with 30-40 5/1600's:) . Like the turnouts they have in TT, Class 1, and 1/2-1600.
I'm sure the 11's entries will now be in the double digits. Just like the 80's again.
Will just have to get them to come over from RECORD and CODE.

I think if you look at the the Hardesty Motor-sports Alumi-Craft class 10 championship car from 2006 you will see that a Major Performance VW air cooled engine can be more than competitive in class 10. Spend less (compared to other class 10 engines) and win more........Hummmm......Even a Nimrod can figure that one out.
Time to Call Major Performance if your in class 10!

Good for VW.
I think this is a precursor to rule changes allowing VW water cooled motors next year or in 09.
AFAIK, the air cooled motors are no longer in factory production anywhere. Not even for industrial purposes. It makes no sense for a factory to support the use of motors it no longer makes.

I am really glad to see everyone's enthusiasm towards VW. There were a lot of people on this forum that were bad mouthing these guys thinking they were going to come into SCORE being big and mighty, take over, and call themselves kings.
Now you guys are starting to see what an incredible company VW is. They are completly different and have a different attitude towards sponsorship, marketing, and getting involved in this sport than any other manufacture I have ever dealt with.
As I was reading all the posts from before, during, and after the 500 and some of the negativity I just kept on saying just wait and see what they want to do to give back to the grass roots of this sport. Be patient! Rome wasnt' built in a day and things like this do not happen over night. It takes a lot of time and effort to put this together.
Once again, glad to see everyone's excitment. When you guys see Clark around, go up to him and say hi, introduce yourselves, he is an incredible person and completly approachable. He is one of us.

Yeah, gotta be light....That's where the Alumi-Craft part is very important.

And how about a TT with VW power and a Touareg body on it? Someone's going to do it

I was planning on entering a Rabbit pickup from 1982 painted sky blue in TT. Try to keep it on the down low though. If I win the VW contingency money it's Coke Lite for everyone at the Office. See you in Cabo.
Can you imagine the Short Bus towing that thing back up the peninsula? What a sight.....LOL
What's even funnier is how many of those freakin things were for sale on Ebay!

I may be wrong (it's happened before) but I think the air cooled 4 cylinders are still being made in Mexico i believe. The have been producing a new "old style" beetle down there for a while.

The only air cooled blocks and heads that I know of that are still in production are aftermarket.

They stopped production on the old bugs a year or two back.

Damn, I got trumped by a NIMROD!!!
I did not know what type of motor Hardesty had. I guess I should have done my homework.
Okay, how about this: This will likely deal a death blow to the water-cooled engine in Class 10. But, the air-cooled engine builders are going to be stoked!
Nimrod - Please tell me I got it right this time
