Pistol got fastest lap today in the race. He started the race was leading by lap 2, came in switched out w/ Deegan, then the car had power steering issues, Mike fixed the problem, finishing the car 4th.

Thanks Woody, but I can't take the credit for driving. The driver was Steve Raskett from Mentone and I was the co-driver. Steve and I will be switching driving and co-driving after the first of the year.
We had a great race. Pistol was fast those first two laps. He nearly landed on us around mile 7 of the second lap. We figured they changed drivers or had some problems when we pasted them just after the start of the third lap. After that we justed tryed to stay smooth and fast to bring her home. We can't thank everyone enough at Larry Jacinto Racing, High Performance Helicopter and our friends and family that came out to help and support, and Mark thank you for those great shots. We thought our day was over on the first lap at the Hill. You probably noticed that we did not hit the hill fast again. And to awnser another quote: Yes Steve and I were pretty Puckered, don't know how we pulled that off.

Our hearts go out to the friends and family that were involved in that terrible accident. It happened just after our camp/pit around mile 42 sometime just after midnight. Some of our pit were the first to get there and help. Out of respect I will leave it at that. OUR HEARTS AND THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU.

This was released early this morning from San Bernardino County Coroner-

Coroner Case #70707349--- On September 29, 2007 at approximately 12:54 AM, Steven Harris, a nineteen year old resident of the city of Murrieta, was the right rear passenger in an ATV Rhino in the off road vehicle area of Anderson Dry Lake. Per witnesses, Harris was standing upright in the bed of the rhino that was traveling at approximately 20 miles per hour when it collided with an off road Toyota pickup. Paramedics pronounced Harris dead of his injuries at 2:20 AM. Three other passengers in the Rhino were transported by air to local hospitals. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

LUCERNE VALLEY
Man killed, others injured in crash
A Murrieta man was killed and several other people injured in an off-road vehicle crash early Sunday.

The crash occurred at 12:56 a.m. in the Anderson Dry Lake bed, north of Camp Rock Road.

Matt Helton, 30, of Yorba Linda was heading west in an off-road Toyota pickup with two passengers standing up in the back of the truck, the California Highway Patrol said.
When Helton reached the top of a hill, he slammed head-on into 21-year-old Curtis Young of Murrieta, who was driving an 2005 Yamaha Rhino all-terrain vehicle. Steven Harris, 19, a passenger on the ATV, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Young suffered major injuries, as did Matt Field, 24, of Imperial Beach. Troy Wilson, 23, of San Juan Capistrano, had moderate injuries, officers said. Field and Wilson were passengers on the ATV. All three men were taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

The CHP said both Helton and Young had been drinking, but Helton had not consumed enough alcohol to be considered under the influence, officers said. Young's level of intoxication is not clear, pending toxicology tests.

The SB Sun's article has the WRONG facts. 4 people in the Rhino, two in Matt's Toyota. Matt and co-driver were buckled up and had helmets on. Two people were standing in back of the Rhino.

Horrible job SB Sun.

THE spot that it happened made it clearly an accident.my heart is with the families of all.if traveling in either direction on the course you can not see over the crest of the hill. i watched the race from the south side and as the copter for jacinto approached all we could see was the blades and he had to be at least 50 feet off the ground and thats all you could see ,making it impossible for people traveling in opposite directions to see each other if they were on the the course.my heart is with all but its truly an accident with no one at fault.

From what I was told, Matt had all his HID's on while in 3rd gear pinned, so the Rhino should have seen his lights coming or even heard his little 22re screaming. But I dont know exactly where the accident took place?

The accident took place on main pit. There is a hill/rise that splits main bit in two sections. The hill is about 30 feet high. Going up and over from both directions is blind.

I dont think there should be anymore discussion about this tragic accident. Its total pointless to talk about what should have happend. Accidents in the desert sad but true happen all the time. There nothing anyone can say or do to change the choices people make. No one was at fault regardless of intoxication or how big the hill was or how loud an engine is. The only thing you can do is make sure it doesnt happen to you. My heart goes out to everyone involved. :(

I want to say there was an accident like this about 4-5 years ago at a race in this same area you are describing. it involved a toyota going head on i belive with another vehicle and there were pics posted of it. just a bad spot in general.
terrible accident in both cases.

if any good comes of this it is I will definitely be way more cautious on hills where i cannot see on the other side.

I don't want to sound accusatory, but one point I have not run across in any of the online discussions of this so far...Someone was going "the wrong way". I spoke to Matt out at the wall Saturday...Nice guy. No evidence of canned stupidity. I don't know who was going which direction at the crash and this section of course gets used in both directions, and has for decades. But at this event, the direction of travel posted for the race course in the area of the crash was southbound. Note again, I wasn't there and am not pointing a finger. Whether we are there to race, or watch, or play...we need to pay attention to the posted direction of travel. And sitting in seats buckled in with helmets on would have left 6 live people to talk about this nasty crash, instead of 5...I've done Tech Inspection, raced, watched and played since the mid 60s. I learned a very long time ago that racing is inherently very dangerous, very few people ever get substantially hurt actually racing since around the time I started Teching, but most of the injuries and deaths happen during play. My friends think I'm a nut for wearing a helmet and buckling in when I go for a little play, but I've seen deaths from NOT taking simple precautions. And I agree that nobody gets in if they aren't sober (from the view of someone else who actually IS). "When you pop the top, it's time to stop!" No "Liquid Robby" allowed...

And, this has nothing to do with Desert Racing, this has to do with how people act once they get a few Drinks in them, and he acts just as bad if not worse than these DGAF'ers running around the desert

Excuse me. Don't tell people to SHUT-UP. A course is set up one week before a race and course markings are not removed until Wednesday, or at the earliest, Sunday morning. At the wee hours of Sunday morning, there was course direction markers. As long as there are Posted race signs, the course is closed to being an open OHV area. That is why BLM sets a time limit, ONE WEEK, for picking up the race course. Once the course it picked up, (signs and TRASH), then your are correct. My heart bleeds for the families of all involved, but we all have to make sure we protect our teams and pit crews. They are precious.

The race was great until we went by the stupid flatbillers at the rock pile. I can’t believe these idiots actually threw rocks at us. It also was not fun dodging the knuckleheads on their 50's riding on the course in the main pit. There also was an idiot in a red truck racing around on the course during the race. It had numbers on the side (I can’t remember them) and was not entered in the race. If you know this idiot please post a pic of his truck and number. This guy needs to be called out and told what a jacka$$ he is. I would be happy to do it if I could find out who it is. It’s a real shame that these clowns may end up ruining it for the rest of us.

We went out there to have some fun and we did until the accident just after midnight. It happened a little over fifty yards from our camp. I personally watched the guys in rhino almost wad it up several times through the whoops prior to the crash.. I apologize to anyone that knew them, but what they were doing was beyond stupid and they should not have been driving that thing in their condition.
