A 609 usually refers to a front axle that's built with 9" housing and Dana 60 knuckles. Dana 60's and Ford 9" rear axles can both be built with 35-spline axles, and many semi-floating Dana 60's are built with Ford 9" housing ends because of the price and availability of parts.

We prefer to call them 960's instead of 609's....... (Grin)

Its actually a great package for the guy who wants that flexibility.
You have your choice of several different types of 9" cases, spools, lockers, etc.
You can run any gear ratio in a 9" and still use the same carrier. You can install 35 spline axles, or larger in the 9" case, and you can even get a high pinion version if you so choose.

The Dana inner C's and knuckles are quite strong, and the hub assembly is easy to get parts for. It makes for an awesome package.

The Hi9 website points out several advantages of running a 9" over the dana 60 center section.
