Posted this on Dezertrangers but want to reach a wide audience. I need to see some setups of I-beamed trucks with rack and pinion steering setups. Start posting them up.
I was going to build a single swinger setup since the box is on the outside of the frame and the pitman arm faces forward, but I don't like the way it looks mocked up. I also think I can do better on lining up the tie rod ends with the beam and radius arm pivots to minimize bump steer. This is going on a I-beamed Scout.

I'm thinking of a setup where the rack acts on a set of swingers and from there its a traditional crossover

Another setup would run a reverse direction rack (turn left goes right) acting on a set or rocker arms in place of swingers. this would allow to mount the rack on top of the frame for clearance

Who's rack would be a good choice?
Any street driven trucks good donors for racks?
Would a hydraulic ram assist help a rack live?
Any other advice or things to keep in mind?

We (i use this term loosely cause I haven't worked on the truck much lately) took the rack off Billy's truck and have replaced it with a single side side swing arm and a box from full size ford....steering Problems seem to be solved....The Engine WELL....

So what kind of problems were you having with the steering? rack failures? linkages?

Since Billy or Chris haven't chimed in, I'll help a little.

There was some internal valving/shim problems that could not get worked out. Other problems also, but the internals were the main problem. Getting it to where it would work right, and STAY working. Also, it was a stock car type rack, so that may have made the problems worse
