View Full Version : Budget 9" ?

Are there any companies that make 9" rearends at a budget cost? I just bought a Bronco and need to get it on the wheels ASAP but I need to put my money in the right places to do it so I can't spend it all on the rearend just yet. But I would like to get a new one to save the hassle of going to the junkyard(s) and cutting one out and then getting it back to the shop and having to cut stuff off of it and/or have it beadblasted. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, maybe just a stock reproduction unit or something but I need a complete rearend. Is it possible to get one for say... $600 or less? I need the 3rd member and axles and everything because I need to set it on the wheels as soon as I can. Or am I better off going to the junkyard?

Thanks.

Didn't all the Broncos come with 9"s at some point?

Speedway Engineering and Mitler Bros. are fairly cheap.

Yes they did come with 9" up until '88 or something like that, then they switched to an 8.8. Mine came with one but the guy I am buying it from is using it for another project he has. Plus I want one that will be wider than stock anyway to match the front end.

You didn't mention what year you have. You'll need a special sensor in the rear if you've got an electronic auto (only in the 8.8). There are at least three 8.8 in this website's classifieds alone the most expensive had a locker and 4.56 gears and was still only 325 bucks. The other two where like 100 bucks. That would get you on the road quick and cheap. Even the cheapest floating nine is gonna run you well over a grand and a junkyard nine will be 300 then you'll need to gear it, lock it, weld on spring perches, buy U-bolts, etc.

Do a search for cheapest 9" or cheap full floaters, you'll get more info than you need.

Search the classified here and at FullSizeBronco.com for an 8.8 that already has the gears you need in it. Here's a few current ones...

$100, 8.8: http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/trader/atl.cgi?ct=2&mct=&md=second&id=16146

$325, 8.8 with 4.10 and limited slip: http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/trader/atl.cgi?ct=2&mct=&md=second&id=15888

Thanks everyone for the help. That is the plan now, to get a 9" out of a 1/2 ton van. Also didn't the 3/4 and/or 1 ton vans come with Dana 60s? Any advantage or disadvantage to running a 60? It's harder to truss because of the cast center section but if it's a full floating rearend with disc brakes I think it may be worth it. I am running leaf springs anyway so I don't anticipate really needing a truss. However I still can even with the cast center section. The only thing I am not sure of is if a 3/4 or 1 ton is still 5 on 5.5" lug pattern or if they are 8 lug?

schreiner floater looks pretty good.
Pricing is good too.
Anyone uses schreiner floaters??
I'm thinking in getting one for my bronco.

We use the Schreiner floaters as the budget axle for our prolites. We have aluminum hubs for them as an upgrade. The steel stockers are very strong but a little heavy.

We reccomend tubeworks rears if its in your budget.

Bajafand, 3/4 and 1 ton are 8 lug and have drum brakes. Converting to discs is easy, but converting to 5 lugs is pretty involved and requires a lathe and mill.

Thanks for the info everyone, I now may keep it 8 lug and go with a Dana 50 TTB setup.

The Dana 50 TTB doesn't really work well for good wheel travel. A better option would be to use the D50 end on the D44 TTB housings. That way you keep the tried-and-true D44 TTB geometry and get your 8 lug hubs.

In your first post you said you needed to get it on its wheels asap.

Keeping that in mind, I recommend you get a used axle from a 1980 -1985 f-150 or bronco and bolt it in. Cheap, quick and easy.

Thanks for the all the info guys. I just got some 5 lug wheels and 35" tires today so I may not go with the Dana 50. I already have D44 beams for the front and hopefully going to pick up a rear end over the weekend.

Do't forget about the speed sensor in the 8.8:
