Well yesterday i went out to nellis dunes for a few hours and was wearing all my protective gear except boots(i dont have 250$ right now) and when racing up a dune i hit a rock and the front tire ran over my foot. I knew i had done somthing so i rode all the way back to camp(that was the most painful time) and when i got back i took the sock off and there i saw my foot was pretty much skinned and there was a little hole in my foot and u could see bits of bone.
so went to the ER and saw what happend, he said it was just a spraing and he would just stich up the hole in my foot
all in all i know i need boots, how would tech 3's hold up?

Betcha those $250 boots sound pretty cheap now.

Any boots are better than no boots, I'm sure that even the $90 fox trackers would be alright protection. I have a pair of Tech 5s that I bout used for $80 of a guy on criagslist. They aren't pretty but they get the job done, and with $5 save-on shoe inserts they are really comfortable. Good luck!

Back when I was living in Vegas, I loaded up my bike and gear one day and headed out to the rock quarry in sloan. While gearing up I realized I had forgoten my boots.
It was about a 45 min drive back home so I decided to putt around for a while and call it an early day. Well on my last stretch back to the truck, I turned it up a notch and coming around a turn tapped a buried rock with my heel. The entire impact went right through the nearly non existant sole of my shoe and shot through my leg.
It hurt so bad that I could barely load the bike up when I got back. I didn't have insurance so I didn't get it checked out. I doubt I broke anything but I did have to hop for about 2 weeks and couldn't put weight on it for over a month.
Leason learned: NEVER RIDE WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GEAR.

NEVER RIDE WITHOUT PROTECTIVE GEAR.
Even with protective gear...bad stuff happens.
My foot got folded upward between a rock and the footpeg while out trailriding in the dez (the top of my toe area in the boot was against my shin for a split second). I thought it was just a broken toe or two so I quickly rode back to camp about 15 miles hoping it wouldn't be so swollen that I couldn't take off the boot.
You can see on the nails where there's marks from being smashed and folded back quite a bit. I ended up with a bunch of broken bones in the foot, and had to say bye bye to my big toe after it died off in about two weeks.
I ride motorcycles for a living and was wearing all the proper gear. If it wasn't for the boots, I'm sure I would've lost the foot and not just the toe.
Luckily it doesn't have any negative affect on walking, and I can still wear flip-flops!

Ouch! doesn't do it justice. I'm glad you made a good recovery.

Kbach66,
You are very right. That same thing happened to my dad back in the 70s. He was racing enduro when he did something similar to what you did. His right foot hit a rock which caused his old school steel toed motorcycle boots to fold straight up at the toe. His toes were trapped in his boots, pointing to the sky. He finished the race, shifting must have been a b*tch, then back at camp had to use plyers, alcohol (the drinking kind) and a buddy to fold the front of his boot down. His toes were so swollen, but being a tough guy he never went in to see if they were broken. His next pair of boots did not have the steel toe. My riding boots were the ugliest things I ever saw, but I was forced to wear them and looking back I'm thankful for it now.
Glad you can still do the flip flop.

YIKES! My foot hurt just looking at those pictures. Bad stuff does happen no matter what, but still, things could be worse without 'protective gear'.

Where'd the edit button go? I meant to say braking, not shifting. Sorry.

If I don't put anything else on, I'll ALWAYS at least throw on my boots and helmet.

What kind of boots did you have on?
I have hit buried rocks dead on at speed with my Tech 8's and although had to stop to let my bell unring- (it shuddered my body all the way up) no serious damage other than a damaged boot tow plate.
My Tech 8's have saved me more than once.
I will not ride with anything else.

I was wearing Tech 8's as well. The problem was that when I tried to lift my foot to avoid the rock, the back of the boot hit the front of the foot peg and that's what why my foot folded over. The force bent my footpeg bracket back about 10 degrees.....so there was some serious forces there. If it just hit the rock, it would've been the same old thing....damn that hurt...I'm gonna have a black nail for a while!!
I think what did the most damage was when the toe of the boot folded backwards/upwards it made a crease along the top of the boot. This pretty much acted like a vise and crushed my foot doing alot of blood vessel damage which is why the toe died off and had to be hacked off....loss of blood flow to the toe.
I still wear tech 8's and probably won't ride with anything else. The boots did they're job to the best of thier ability and I don't think any other boots could've prevented it.

I am a big believer in tech 8s. I tried sidis, tech 8s, gaerne and oxtars all in one season and the tech 8s came out on top. Hell the pair I was wearing last time I raced before injuring myself (6/06) are a pair worn 1 race from paris to dakar by Chris Blais...
Some heavy duty hiking boots from big 5 or even combat boots will do the trick if laced up tight enough and you dont have the money. I wouldnt suggest more then trail riding on a quad with them but its better then tennis shoes.
Your toe pictures creep me out. I took a rock one time and it pulled my toe under the peg and smashed it hard enough to rip the metal toe protector off the boot. This was about 100 yards out of the pits in a national...needless to say it was a long 2nd loop.

I've had that happen. Kind of like getting hit on the head but from the bottom. You find out that your head really can ring.
In the old days there were no folding pegs, all solid. Bent many with feet and ankles.
It may sound trivial, but I found out long ago that it can really pay to keep the toe nails very short, especially the big toe. Nails are the first thing to catch when things go wrong. If short, the toes can slip around a bit.

I think quads are even more dangerous on the feet/ankles.
I can remember launching off a dune on my 84 Kaw Tecate and losing my right foot off the peg upon a hard landing. Needless to say- it ended up under the right rear axle and I rode it down the dune. Even after stopping, I had a hard time pulling it out.
I ended up with a slightly sprained ankle (thanks to my O'neal Ultra-Lite 2 boots-I still have them on the shelf)
Had I had Tech-8's at the time- much less pain I am sure.
No boots- mucho pain and damage.
A little duct tape over the sock- good to go for the rest of the w/e.

There is no replacement for riding boots..period.
Hiking/working boots do not have the ankle support, shin protection or even a stiff enough sole (you can break your foot by flexing it over the peg). You are just fooling yourself into thinking they help, its a false sense of security.
Boots, helmet and gloves at a min and then pants and a jersey is the best way to go. Jeans are a abrasive material plus the little rivets can cause even more injury.
Buy boots even if they are an inexpensive pair, it will be money very well spent. Most emergency room co-pays are 50-150 bucks :)

I'll bet my feet on my tech 8's best investment I've ever made...I know, I know...there expensive but, of all the crap that they have saved me from its not even a question, i'll never buy another brand of boots!!!

i have seen more broken ankles at the track with people buying in-expensive boots.
my deal is-
if you dont have the extra $600 bucks to properly equip yourself with quality safty gear, you dont deserve to own a dirtbike. I will not spend low dollar on a helmet to save my head, there is a reason certain helmets cost so much, the company does their homework. Helmets are also replaced once every year or so also. Alpinestar boots are THE ONLY boot for me, comfort, protection, and size (14) are a huge reason i will spend extra to save myself from pain. From tech 10's to vectors, now to tech 8's, i will not trust any other boot.
Good rule of thumb, if your boots flop over when you take them off, they are only worthy of the fire pit, not your feet.
I would say park the bike untill you can fork out money on some decent boots.

the tech 3's are good, but just wait alitle longer and save some more and go with the tech 8's or 10'su will be glad u did, my last pair of boots were tech 8's and they lasted 4 years untill i just couldnt stand the holes in em' any more so i got some tech 10's and they are amazing, there is not a better boot out there.

Like everyone has said, you need full boots. Just today, I had a really bad getoff. Well, not really a getoff as I ended up getting slammed face first into the sand. I was doing all of about 5mph when it happened. My leg ended up getting pinned by the bike. The swingarm was resting just above the ankle. Without the protection of the boot, I can just imagine how bad I would have been injured. I walked away with just a sore shoulder. Did a self recovery and rode home. If I hadn't been wearing boots, I would more than likely had to pull out the cell phone and call for rescue.:D

yea boots and a helmet are the least saftey apparel to wear... if your going to ride put those to on and more... if possible... all it takes is one little pebble and your on your head with a broken next or ankle.

I'll stay away from the foot injury details... We've all had them. Wrapped mine around the peg ripping out a stump I didn't see in the shadows.
Anyways... I went in the store to buy the Tech 8's about 4 years ago. I tried them on and personally didn't like them. Tried on the Tech 6's. Same thing. Tried on the Tech 3's, loved them!!! I went in to buy the expensive boots and walked out with the cheapest and money had nothing to do with the decision. Just personal preference. 4ish years later I'm still wearing them with no complaints!!!

I've worn Astar boots before and they were ok but once I tried a pair of Garne SG-10's I was hooked. I can't stand Astar tech 10's, so ugly. The new SIDI's are real nice also. If I showed up to ride and forgot my boots I would go home. Always dress for the crash.

And I'll also add, spend more money on your riding gear then your first bike. The pain you save is worth it in the long run.

My first pair of boots were Tech 8's.. comfy from the first day, finally wore them out after 6 years. I had one ankle injury bad sprain, couldnt put weight on my ankle for a month, my leg is just too skinny! Just bought Tech 10's, I think they look sharp myself, especially in white :) but the real reason I got them over new 8's is the inner booty, even more ankle support for my chicken legs and ankles.

papajohn that sounds gnarly!
I always wear boots. They saved my butt from a broken ankle for sure last race. I was going through a technical section into a right hand 90* turn in silt with a big boulder in the middle and fell over. The bike fell on my leg and I twisted my body in reaction and my boot stopped my leg from rotating all the way. Just a hyperextension, could have been nasty.

I always wear helmet, boots and gloves. Never really wore any other gear besides riding clothes. When I didnt wear boots and was wearing shorts I burnt like my whole calf riding a YZ125 on a dune in the summer, was not fun. I got some Oxstars in December and I love 'em. If I don't wear boots, which is rare, I will ride very timid. When they're on all hell as broken loose. There has been countless times my foot would have been amputated by doctor rock without boots on, just plain dumb to ride with out them.

not wearing boots is just STUPID ! countless times of racing and kicking rock/boulders, running my feet over, the hot header on my leg, rockings getting pitched up front the front tires...boots are # 2 right below a good helmet... you can be cheap on riding gear, IT SAVES YOUR LIFE !! plus wearing a new set of boots can help you bust out a robot dance !!! hahah a:D
