19 bike and quad riders signed up to solo the 1296 mile, 53 hour time limit, 40th Annual Baja 1000.

All of these riders have my respect, my question is, are there any Mouse McCoy's in this group?

If any of the riders read this, how have you trained and what are your expectations?

Bottomline, I hope everyone has a safe race.

See you in Baja!

I can't believe there are not more comments about 19x riders attempting 1296 miles by themselves.

Now there are 21 bikes registered as 'solo' !

It would be nice to have an Ironman class for bikes. Cut the entry fee, and use numbers everyone would recognize. Only sportsman and class 22 have more 2 wheeled entries...

I've heard rumors of 2-3 guys planning to sign up the night before....sort of a tactical move. 1 in 8 bikes is a solo rider!

1300 miles....

Godspeed all solo riders!

Agree Dusty Husky.
Casey has that class at BITD and gets a good turnout.
I think Sal does not promote that class because he does not want a large turnout.
Too much potential for a tragedy.
We will see how it turns out this race.
The amount of solo riders is unprecedented.
The 53 hr limit will help many for rest and sleep.
XR650 would be my pick.
I would leave the 450 at home...

Not trying to be a smart-a but what would be the tactical advantage?

Mental advantage to those 2-3 guys planning to sign up the night before.... kind of like wearing your lucky green socks for the big football game .....only an advantage to you!

I saw that too on ADVrider.
Thought he was kidding.
Guess not.
Good luck to him.
Crazier things have happenned.
The first silt bed out of Ojos should be interesting.
Even if he and the bike holds out- he will probably time-out.
Although the course looks fast down south.....

Not trying to be a smart-a but what would be the tactical advantage?

The 20+ solo riders will have trouble keeping track of who is where on the course-because they are spread out between sporstman and open pro and other classes....but if ya sign up open pro class the night before the race, you have the tactical advantage of knowing where you are in relation to the other fast ironman racers--but they have no clue you are a solo rider.

If after 895 miles you know you have a 2-3 hour lead--you can make the decision to pull over and catch a few winks.

At the same time if you know you are 90 minutes behind the first ironman bike 347 miles from the finish--you know ya cant go to sleep--keep riding--and hope the leader calculates he can safely pull over for an hour or two...

The other advantage is less tactical and more like 'reputation insurace' -- if your name is Pastrana and you fly low on the radar by signing up the night before--if ya DNF its not like the whole world was watching. Most other racers wouldnt even know he was in the race...unless they read race-dezert or have inside info.

Anyway--there are some significant reasons for not signing up in advance if you are going for the ironman win. An ironman class would help close these gaps.

Saw and talked with Travis Pastrana last nite at the FMX event/party at Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel/Casino and he confirmed that he is racing B1K solo moto. He assured me he was gonna keep throttle in the safe zone and is looking forward to finishing the race, something that has eluded him in a 4-wheeled vehicle. BTW, he was not on a bike at this party -- it was Cowboy Kenny Bartram and his FMX buddies putting on a kick-*** show in the Hard Rock parking lot. Slednecks snowmobile crew were also there, but a guy crashed big time underrotating a snowmobile backflip-75 ft gap ramp jump. That shut down the snowmobile action for the evening. Goooooo TP!!!

WickedGravityVideo broke the story, 1st confirmation I heard of. The media frenzy around TP will be fierce. If anyone can do it, he can. Just don't know if he has the loooong distance experience and stamina. TBC.......

Are you riding a Honda? Are you using Honda pits? Will be pit crew member near San Ignacio. I live in Santa Clara, Utah. Glad to see a Utah competitor!

Gary

I am using Mag7. I am on a Honda but Honda was full when I signed up for pits and when some spots opened up I heard they weren't taking any solo riders, so I didn't bother. Maybe I'll stop by and say hi, bum some food or something.

Chris Deavers and Kenny Atkins (and 2 others I think) from Provo (I'm in Provo as well) are also racing - 18X - they are using Honda Pits.

Have Fun!!

Best of Luck to all the solo riders. I know Mike Kay will make it!

Just know that a majority of the soloists finished between the 30hr - 40hr mark last year. ;)

See ya'll down south! Let's get this thing going already...

I soloed the 500. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Does anyone out there know that they gave a award to the overall solo rider? No?

That is because Score did not know who it was. Acerbi at the last minute put up a $250 gift cert and a crystall vase thing. You signed up for it a contingency. I thought I had a shot at winning it so after calling Sal and co and Acerbi multiple times I sat down and made a list of the solo riders per the program and there times and sent it all to Sal. He called a few days later and confirmed what I thought. Eddy Garcia won it on a yamaha wr 45o in about 11:50. I think I got second. I have never seen anything on the score web site about this. I hope Mr Garcia got he awards.

Their was 37 solo entries in the 500. They made a class for 2 Volkswagan. Can't something be done for to get a solo class?
