Tacoma CV Boots

My buddy just blew out one of his front cv boots so we are gonna be taking it apart and putting another one on this weekend. Does anyone have any tips, links (already have the ttora one), or other helpful info that we could use. Thanks for any help.

Truck is a 04 4x4 TRD Taco with 2.0 SAW replacements.

As far as swappin in new boots goes, very easy. The thing that takes the longest is cleaning out all the old grease (MUST DO THIS! the new grease might react with old grease..unlesss you can insure its is the same type of grease)....and popping the dust caps off the hubs without destroying them.

You need a 35mm socket (I think that is it) and A big breaker bar to get the spindle/axle nut off. Don't take the brakes or spindle off before you do this...someone needs to hold the brakes while you turn the nut. I don't think you even have to remove the brakes anyway. Just loosen the nut, , remove the 4 bolts that hold the spindle to the ball-joint, then use a mallet to knock the axle out of the hub.

For the inner CV, you need a 3lb hammer, and a piece of tube or a big screwdriver. Put the tube/screwdriver/drift (which will act like a punch) under the lip near the where the cv boot clamps to the cv, and keep tapping it (away fro the diff) until it pops out...its only held in with a little spring clip...which I have found to be fine to reuse. Make sure you don't bend up the dust shields on either cv.

As far as blowing CV boots goes..you will be changing cv bots annually unless you limit your lift in the front to 1". Putting the diff drop spacers in the front will help you get about 1/2" inch more...thats it!

I used the 930 cv boots from Kartek on the outers, and they only lasted a year with 2" of lift.....so I don't know if I would bother. On the inners, i used some super flexible boots from and online off-road shop like Front range or some place. They held up, but the inners always last longer.

Get the axle nut real tight when you put it back in...somewhere around 200ft/lbs. You can just hand push the cvs back into the diff, just rock them around a little while pushing. Remember to refill the diff.
