This may be very basic for some of you, and then again some of you will be able to use this help you out. I was trying to explain this to a friend who bought the wrong wheels at a swap thinking they would fit his truck. I found this picture on some odd site i went to on accident. So perhaps you will find this useful, and perhaps not.

You measure from the center of one lug to the center of the one opposite it. Or on a 5 lug, the one two lugs over.

Or on a 5 lug, the one two lugs over. Not quite. Especially now that half the vehicles out there are running metric bolt circles.

Measure from the center of one stud to the outside of the the stud accross the bolt circle. Test in on a bolt pattern that you know to verify.
