I am looking at running an ls-2 built by Greg @ Total Perfomance(appx. 585 hp) behind and Albins 5speed. I have been away from the sport for acouple of years, but it's starting to sounds like a lot of guys are putting on an LS bellhousing and running a GM performance clutch. Also many are running a torque converter.

My question is, on a 3500lb prerunner, is the converter really necessary if you aren't normally trashing the tranny? I have heard you lose about 40hp. And it's more expensive to build out. How much more would be another question. Thanks.

Ok, "Jacque Cousteau" doesn't seem to be getting the reply's. What is the average age on this site? He was a classic. Can I get away without running a torque converter and still be reliable? Will be running an albins 5 spd./ls-2 585hp. 3,500 lb. buggy.

I think you should be fine. We have run the base Redline LS2 in a class 1 (around 3300lbs race ready) and with standard clutch no problem. Do replace the clutch every 1000 miles or less. Recently upgraded the motor to around your hp range, we have yet to put a lot of miles on it but don't think it should be a problem. As far as I know 550-575hp is about as much you want to put through the clutch in a racing application.

We run a fortin wide gear 4 speed, torque converter was around 3-4k more. Most people that run the converter like them and really have good reliability now that the bugs are worked out. Should make drivetrain parts last a bit longer as well. If your starting from scratch and have the money I would say go for it but its not absolutely necessary.
