Groggy but still standing, I confirm today that the adventure is not over. We believed in the 2008 Dakar. We wanted a demanding, tough and intense thirtieth edition. You had chosen to register for it, to spend time, energy and money. Our common challenge was wrecked at the precise moment when it was shaping up. The shock was brutal for all of us and the consequences heavy for most.

After measuring the disappointment of everyone, a certainty remains: the decision to cancel the 2008 Euromilhoes Dakar was the only reasonable alternative based on the information that we had. The terrorist threats that weighed on the security of the rally failed to leave the slightest choice for responsible organisers. There was no hesitation and there is now no regret.

Shaken by what happened, we were mainly touched by the dignity that the competitors showed in Lisbon. This mature attitude looks like the image that we have of you. We interpret it as a sign of confidence that we will in no way betray.

It is now our turn to deliver a message of hope because we have taken the habit of looking to the future. That is where our energy will be useful. For the teams of the rally, enthusiasm and readiness to fight have already beaten the greyness. We now want to plan a meeting with you in the weeks to come. The next rally that we will offer you in 2009 will be your challenge. It is already ours.

Director of the Dakar Rallye

See, take that all you ASO and 2009 doubters....

God I can't wait to see where and what kind of route they will use next year.

that sounded pretty weak. i 'm not sure i would'nt have gone ballistic if i had as much invested as most teams did. especially the privateers. their timing is the main issue in my mind. they had to know beforehand. i'd be hard pressed to believe in the aso at this piont.

Doesn't sound weak at all to me. I totally believe they knew the ramifications of their decision for all the competitors of the rally. Now if the rumors of having the rally in South America are true, we're going to have one heck of a rally next January...

Who cares if it won't be Dakar? It might end up being better than Dakar. We'll have to wait a year to find out. And of course RGM will win. He was going to win this year's rally before it being canceled. Assuming he races next year, he'll win that, and if it goes back to Dakar the following year, he'll win then too.

They should do it in the states! Start the race in Barstow and run it over the rockies then down to new mexico!!

who cares? the people who were gonna fork over the 4.5 Million so RG wouldn't have to..

09 rally? if its NOT Dakar.. who cares? there are long distance rally's all year long.. but how many does RGM enter? only one that I can think of. Dakar has MASS appeal this is why Hummer, Monster and Jim Beam are on board to begin with.

assuming fly is correct, congrats! stellar accomplishment! No offense taken. We stay pretty well under the radar. For us, just starting the rally was a greater accomplishment than what our stage finishes were.
