If it doesn't start, finish, or run through Dakar Senagal, it shouldn't have Dakar in the name. I have no problem with having a multi stage marathon rally somewhere else (South America hopefully) but don't call it Dakar whatever. Its like how the Euros call the off road rallys "Bajas", its just wrong.

Darren stated that it will probably still have the Dakar name due to name recognition.

Agreed ... The Dakar Rally name and history belong to Africa ... keep it there in hopes to be revived some day !! ... A New Great Rally for '09 and beyond should have its own name/identity !! It's time for a new rally venue , I for one belive it can be as great as the real DAKAR with its own unique challenges and rewards !!

I think calling it something like "Spirit of Dakar" rally or something would work well in my book.

How could I possibly forget the race where American Danny LaPorte finished 2nd to Stephane Peterhansel with only minuets between them after 22 stages!
But correct me if I'm wrong (and I sure some one will) but back then when the rally was called the Paris to Dakar rally, and they at least started the 92 event in Paris.
They should drop Dakar from the name title just like they dropped the Paris from the name when they no longer started in Paris.

Here's the RallyRAIDio call from Charlie Rauseo, team manager for Rally PanAm a few words about the "make up" rally in Europe, as well as the team's plans for the rest of the year:

Oh, and apparent confirmation that the Rally will be held in South America next year (per the ASO)!
