FIA is at the forefront of motorsport safety and regulations.

The Rally drivers require adequate head and neck movement to be able to successfully pilot the vehicles around very technical courses. They are securely strapped in the car. I also believe the seat technology is a quite more advanced. I have also seen nets setup inside the car.

The Hans has just kicked in this year. There has been a mad panic today as the supplementary regs for the Saudi Baja stated that seeded drivers were required to wear the Hans system... until this morning when an e-mail came around telling everyone that it is mandatory!

Look up the actual amount of force developed with the additional weight of a helmet on a neck. Overly adequate/damaging head and neck movement can be achieved in the event of an accident without proper restraint.

I was no way implying that they should not use or that they dont need them. I am in no way a Rally expert, and was just trying to provide info on why they were not commonly used UP UNTIL NOW.
Thanks.
