Ok so I just got back from glamis where I had the chance to experience a Rhino with a Yamaha R1 street bike engine conversion. It is very fast and very fun. It was the first weekend out with the new engine conversion and there were problems, as was expected. The worst of it was the rear end blew out during the sand drags. I was wondering if there was an aftermarket company making new gear sets or a heavy duty rear end all together. I just don't think those stock gears will ever hold up to the increased horsepower. I apperciate any help!

Best advice I can give you from being an ex-rhino mechanic..... build a real car

Yea I agree with that one! It's not my toy but I get to ride in it and repair it when it breaks. So no one out there makes stronger gear sets or complete rear ends for these things yet?

This is the rearend I was going to use for my rhino when I was going to use a streetbike motor. Very nice gearbox with reverse.
You may also want to check with Gear-One. I think they were working on something also.

We went with a direct chain drive for our sv12000 rhino (and CBR600) - we couldn't afford a NICE FNR box, and we didn't know if any of them would really hold up for the long haul.........check your gear ratios in those FNR boxes, too - you want your gearing to be set up well for what you are doing....

Thank you everyone for the help. I think we now have a good idea as to what we are going to do for the rebuild. 450grl you're Rhino has a CBR and you race it? Will this R1 Rhino be class legal?

That was my Super Rhino (desert racer) we actually swapped out the CBR motor with an SV1000 (v-twin - much better torque!).......I race short course now, so we built a rhino-motor short course racer, which is what I race currently. But I was able to race my Ssuper Rhino in BITD, Whiplash and SCORE.......and I would have been able to run it in an MDR race I believe (the Powder Puff race), as well......usually I ran either unlimited or sportsman.......I'd just give whichever race organization you want to run in a call and see if you can run it. Everyone was pretty receptive to my rhino, as long as the people I was racing against didn't feel I had a huge advantage.......

Well that's good to know! He built this thing for Glamis but he's already talking about wanting to race it. I'm assuming that you're CBR motor is mounted as it would be in the motorcycle where as the R1 Motor is facing 90 deg. with the output shaft (sprocket) facing aft. I don't think I'll be able to run a chain drive.

Yes, both of our motors were mounted in the stock rhino location (custom mounts, of course) - just like in the bikes..... and we ran the chain straight back to the rear drive setup (jack shaft setup to support electric reverse). We took out the whole rhino drive setup - no diffs, we used custom drive shafts to drive the rear axles......

i would recommend mounting the engine sideways and going with the drive shaft (my plans) just for weight and simplicity reasons. but corry i saw the picture of your carrier setup and its pretty clean. but any ways good luck and well see ya out there.

most R1 's are using a jeffco diff box with reverse.

Come on Mike, maybe others that are just now encountering the problem could use the solution.

That Rhino is a handfull! We saw a car at Glamis with the jeffco gear box and a 'busa. That's a pretty sweet piece! We would have to pretty much start from ground up to get it to work in his though. He had problems with the Rhino all last season and the start of this season. He built a sandcar and now the Rhino just sits.

you dont wanna dump a rediculous amount of money in a rhino to go fast, you want a street bike motor in a off-road car? im bbuilding a 2 seat truggy weighin in about 1200 lbs. with a suzuki hayabusa motor, 4 link rear a arm front for about 30k out the door turn key ready to mob. with full long travel coil bypass per corner.. thats the way to go not a sxs although they are fun as all hell
