so i am thinking about getting back into mountain biking, not that i was really into it before but i did have a cool bike (foes). i am a crappy rider and like going down more than i like going up but my reason for getting a new bike is to make my @$$ get some exercise. i am looking for a all mountain/free ride bike, full suspension in the $1000 to $1500 range. i saw some "kona" bikes at the local shop that were nice, what's the deal with those??? any recommendations and why??? thanks.

Kona makes a decent bike. Youll always want your Foes back though.

I was looking into this as well, hardtails for trail riding. First look was at Kona's but the shop was trying to push Jamis' as "a lot for your money", not sure on quality etc. Being somewhat new to the sport not sure which direction to go as well.

Specialized bikes have always been great bang for your buck. Just make sure you can get the fox shox and not the private label. I cant imagine you(Ollie)riding a stock bike though. For a just a little bit(ha ha) more you can build a new foes fxr or intense 5.5 and have a great bike also check out the turner and ellsworth. mtbr.com is a good place for some deals, also socaltrailriders.org.

The Deal with Kona:
Kona started making bikes in 1988...the are a half US and Half Canadian company. Most of the bikes are built in Taiwan with some being made in Italy. Compare them to any other top ten company and you will find they have the least amount of breakage. They have always been known for the burlyness.

How freeride do you want to go? The Kona Dawg fit your bill last year but this year they have been made into more of a XC/AM type of bike except for the base Dawgma. The 6" Coiler's have been replaced by the CoilAir that now has 6" of travel for AM riding but automatically adjusts to 7.4" of travel when you start heading into Freeride terrain. But they start at a little high price.

Ollie, How much travel are you looking for? Front and Rear?

I have sold and owned every major brand (Special Ed, TREK, Cannondale, Santa Cruz, GT, Turner, etc.), I own a Kona, an Eastern, and a DMR. The Kona has never let me down. I can't say that of the other brands mentioned.

Foes are beautiful! I have a set of Foes levers Brent gave me sitting here on my desk. He has made bikes that pedal pretty well but the frames start at the price of most people's completes.

noticed your from culver city. check out wheelworld.com i am pretty sure they are in culver or near by. they also have some good deals on kona full suspension bikes right now i think?? my buddy rides a o6 kona coiler and he hasnt had a major problem with it. the only thing he wishes he did was splurged and got the better forks. Those marrizucci Drop off 4s are no good. hope this helps some

jb - you know me to well but i really need to buy something reasonable since i like the idea of riding but don't really know how much i will do it.

motojojo - i think i am looking in the 6" travel range but i am kind of new to all of this.

I'm more than happy with my Commencal bike. I think they make some of the best looking bikes out there and they work well too. Check them out here: http://www.commencal.com/news/ I've got a Supreme Mini DH and it's bearable going up, but loves the descents.

Which ever bike you chose, I would try to find a good price on a 2007 bike. There are usually some really good deals to be made.

Good luck.

If you go up as much as you go down check out the specialized epic. The rear shock has a brain that requires an upward force from the ground (bumps, rocks) but remains locked out for climbing, which eliminates the bouncing of the rear while you are peteling uphill. I have an 05 and i have loved it. The 07s have a few changes to the rear shock which i guess makes them better. the specialized bikes cost more than the konas, but you are definatly getting your moneys worth.

Ollie,

If you are looking for a complete bike for $1,000-$1,500, you can't go wrong with the Mongoose Teocali. I was in the same boat as you. I used to race Dual Slalom/DH, used to own a Foes, had all kinds of nice bikes. I just wanted a fun bike that I could ride cross-country, downhill, whatever for $1,000. Every bike store I went to had a $1,000 FS bike but they looked cheap and didn't have 6" of travel.

Anyways, I found the Teocali for $900 at Performance. It comes with Sram/FSA/Avid components, disk brakes, air fork and shock (suntour, but fully adjustable and, honestly, pretty decent). The bike has good geometry for freeride stuff, handles nice, pedals nice (compared to my other race bikes with road cassettes and 9 gears!) and is fairly light. GT also sells a simmilar bike (I think the 4.0) if your not into the Mongoose brand name.

The Mongoose Teocali is not like the bikes you see in Wall-Mart. It is a frame that has research and development put into it by professional riders. For the price and build it's hard to beat.

Here's an old picture on the Foes - for old times sake!

I just bought a KONA coiler. It is heavy enough for light downhill, but not too heavy that it is a pain to pedal. I live in Minnesota so an extreme downhill ride like the Santa Cruz V10 was not necessary. I am pretty hard on bikes but have been impressed with the coiler so far, even when I had it out west (bootleg canyon NV.) The trip ended in a shattered coller bone, but the bike is fine. I would definately recommend the Konas for the type of riding your talking about and the price your looking to spend.

You will have a tough time getting 6" on a bike b/t 1-1.5K new at least, maybe check out craigslist for a used one until you think you are ready....then build one of these...

Whatever you get, just get out and ride it...

I will be renting a Kona at Whistler this summer, can't wait...

Ollie, Now is a good time to buy. If you buy last years model the shops are trying to clear them out for the 08's. Giants are midpriced and decent bikes. I have a Foes weasel that Brent made for me (I'm 6'4"), that rides sooo nice I'll never sell it. I call it "the couch" because your butt never leaves the seat.

I have been riding Santa Cruz bikes sense 2001 and they have been great bikes, wouldn't mind having that white Nomad pictured above. I think you would spend a bit over 2g to get into a Santa Cruz though.

Like JB said, look into the Specialized line of bikes and personally, I think the Trek Fuels seem like a nice bike. Kona makes a good bike as well.

If you don't know your components figure them out before you go and buy something with complete junk on it. The quality of the rear dealer means more then having fancy handlebars. I know you aren't a novice but just pointing things out.

what components should i stay away from???

Lance T

Any Shimano component under LX and any SRAM component under X.7 We have had problems with Truvativ cranks but other than those items it is really a lot of preference.

X2 on the Haro X6. Great bike! The X6 LT is about $300 more but you get a lot for the extra $.

One more component to avoid...Lycra!

Well, now that you ask I guess I am a bit rusty on my info :)

I run XTR and XT but I have heard that LX is a good kit, just a bit heavier then the others. Some of this big hit stuff is just a waste IMO and hard to use. A friend has a line of Shimano that has a funky through axle for the rear wheel. I am sure its just great if you plan on hucking the bike but it makes trail repair a ***** and a two person thing. The new SRAM stuff seems to work good as well.

When looking at bikes make you sure you are getting a good base with a good frame and fork and decent components. Also, ask if you want to upgrade down the road or if you break a part do you have to run the same part. Like mentioned above with my friends bike his rear derailleur only works with his rear wheel and shifters so to replace to a different rear wheel would require a complete drive train swap.

You don't need to buy top of the line stuff and truth be told my current bike works 1000% better with a Shimano drive train then my bike in the 90's with all the trick, billet after market stuff did. Most companies mix build kits with there house brand and Shimano and Sram.

Anybody remember the old Nishiki Alien???
:D

And I think something was said about it already, but if I had to replace my newer Giant NRS, I'd get one with the rear shock lockout. Essential!

Lance T
February 12th, 2008, 18:12
I remember the Alien! Square tubes.

IMO, lockout's are band aids for poor suspension design. If you are going to pull the weight than use the suspension. You will be faster uphill and down with a properly tuned suspension.

Alex, sounds like your friend has Shimano Saint. The cranks are cool but I agree...everything else is a waste.

Saint sounds right, I am not up on the huck parts just the good old standard XC stuff.

I have a lock out on my Superlight and the only time you would really want to use it is when on pavement but when I have done that it seems really, really odd, I lost the bob I was use to. So unless you ride a lot of street and get use to it I don't think its needed.

I like these threads so much more then the current crop of political ones :)

Ollie, go with as much of the XTR groupo as you can get. XT is ok for cranks & chain rings, but for derailers you want XTR. LX is cheepo. Best thing is to find the style of bike you want, then start comparing the different models in the "name" brands, Kona, Haro, Trek, Specialized, whatever of that style. After you get that sorted then try to maximize the most bang for your buck by comparing the components. The most important thing is to find a mom & dad shop to buy from and you'll be loyal to, so you'll get good service. Once you pick the shop & bike, have the shop properly fit you to the right sized bike and set up the stem length & height, seat position (front to back) etc.

I just had my knee worked on last Monday, and I'm looking forward to getting back on my Trek Fuel 100 after almost 3 years of being injured. Lots of great single track around Simi, I could show you loops of 5 to 50 miles. We'll get Sean to join in and he'll carry all the heavy stuff in his pack!

I would say go with a Kona, Good bike and they usually come with a good component set. I know that alot of the freeride stuff(stinky, the new ones petal better than they used to) was comming with alot if not all Saint components. That bike is probably a little out of your price range unless you find a screaming deal or its used, check the shops for a demo bike. You might also want to check on is Foes new line they have a ton of awsome bikes, and some new ones that go up as well as down. I also know that both Santa Cruz and Ventana are both designed and built in Cali, you might pay more but at least you know its made in america.

Dont quote me on this but I heard that Shimano is discontinuing the Saint line which sucks cause alot of the parts work really well.

Good luck finding a new bike with XTR components. Your looking at $2,500-$3,000, at least, for a new bike w/ XTR.

The new crop of Shimano and Sram components are great. The derailures are much better than a couple years ago, even on the lower end components.

The other guys discussed frame and suspensions, so I'll share my experience with components.

For a DH/Freeride bike, XTR is the not always the best choice. While it is superb stuff, it just can't take the beating and bashing of a freeride bike. I've got some old XTR cranks that I bent the arms on (this is back when most stuff was still square taper, and these were innovative with their splined interface)

You'll want strong cranks to start off with, I agree with the TruVaviv stuff lacking in durability. I broke too many cranks for a while (before they went to the pipe spindle, external bearing design) and wound up running Profile and Azonic CrMo cranks for years.

For brakes, something with disc 8" rotors is what you'll want (especially if you're a big guy). Hayes, Magura, Avid all make good brakes.

Shifters - I always ran a cheap road deraileur in the back. I liked the short cage, and I was breaking them pretty often, so I didn't want to spend much. Just make sure that the ratios between your shifters (whether a trigger type, or a twist type) match the ratio of your derailleur.

I ran a bashguard and roller that I cobbled together to keep things on the front (I ran a 2 chainring setup for a while also, that was a weird roller setup)

For a headset, I ran a King. Some guys ran FSA stuff, but I hated it, it's cheap crap.

Seatpost - get a good one. Nothing can ruin a ride faster than a broken seatpost. I ran Race Face and my favorite was Thompson. Both super strong, with good retainer systems

Wheels -
Hubs are entirely up to you. I've run several different ones over the years. Paul, King, XT, XTR, Phil Wood, Atom Lab, etc.

Rims are another personal preference. Finding that delicate balance between strength and weight is the hardest thing in the world to do. I ran a 24" 36 spoke rear for a while, but went back to a 26" 32 spoke in the end. I like the Atom Lab and Mavic stuff best. I do prefer to buy the parts, and have a shop lace them for me. I find I get a much stronger wheel this way. If I do buy a set of machine made wheels, I'll still have my buddy at the shop break them down, and re-tension them more uniformly and true(er) than most any of the machine made ones ever are.

I do miss riding as much as I used to, but since the birth of my kid, and my promise to my wife, I pretty much don't get to anymore. I've got a nice Mountain Cycle Rumble in the shed that I seldom sees daylight anymore. I had 13 bikes when I got married, now I've got 2, and one's for sale...

Now you're talking...that nomad is my sons that we just built, 31.5 lbs. I still ride my old school DBR3.2 fs I built in '97, state of the art at the time...lol. I have updated it to SID and Risse shock, still running the 10+ year old XT, not a problem since...we go round and round, old school vs new school, light vs heavy, sqeaky brakes vs grinder brakes, 2.5" travel vs 6"....we have as much fun with that as we do riding...

We ran the Lemurian race in Redding last spring and let me tell you my 26lb bike is better for a race like that than a 32 lb rig...

Before you buy decide what type of riding you will do most of the time, that will tell you what direction to go...good thread.

Sense we are going down memory lane,

I started Mt. Biking in 1982 on a Ross. It was black with gold rims and bull-moose bars. Then in 84 I got a brand new Stumpjumper, which I still have, its pretty complete, most of the Suntour stuff is still on it, original wheels and what not, it sits in a shed, its really not that much fun to ride anymore.

Then I got an 87 Rockhopper and built that up till I bought a Klein Rascal frame in 1990 and moved all the components from the Rockhopper to that. Rode the ish out of that bike until the head tube became out of round so Klein gave me the new Pulse which was cool. I think it weighted in around 21-22 lbs with a Rock Shock Sl Carbon fork, Cooks E-cranks, Avid brakes, Grafton Brake levers and White Industries hubs. It was a pretty cool bike.

Had a Cannondale Super V, what a pile....

Didn't have a bike for a few years in the 90's and now my 01 Santa Cruz Superlight with an 03 frame as I craked the first one. By far the best working bike I have ever had for half as much as some of my bikes. I just need to ride it more ;)

My bikes...

1999-Present - Kona Roast
2001-2002 - Foes DS
2003-2005 - Gack (Chromolly Hardtail DS)
2005-2006 - Haro (Sold to Sirhk100)
2005-2006 - Cannondale Gemini
2006-Present - Mongoose Teocali

Now I have (2) kids under 21 months and can barely make it home from work without falling asleep, so the bikes are collecting dust! Plus the fires in Santiago Canyon closed all of the trails that I just started riding.

A few of the highpoints for me:

Diamond Back Sorrento
Specialized Rockhopper
DeKerf Generation (single speed)
Kona Kaboom (single speed)
? Beach Cruiser (pub crawler, rattlecan paintjob, junkbin parts assortment)
Brisa 26" trials rig
Monty mod trials bike
Rocky Mountiain RM6
Redline 24" cruiser
Diamondback 24" cruiser
Mosh Lux 3
Mountain Cycle Rumble

Somewhere along the way, for a short while, I also rode a Scott early 90's mountain bike (purple anodized parts anyone?) and a CrMo Stumpjumper from the same era.

Trails around here, are mostly loops, so they get old pretty fast. We (I rode with the guys from the local bike shop, most of them were wrenches there) would do epic urban rides, 3-5 nights a week. Usually around town, to rack up 20-30 miles a night. A few times a year we'd do a long ride all the way to Fort Worth or Dallas (50+ mile round trip). About once a month, we'd do a pub crawl.

Ollie,

Get a bike from 5 years ago that is in good condition used.. I bought 2 used bikes over the last few years. I would say they are $3500+ bikes that i bought for around $1100 each. The bikes I bought are a Ventana Marble Peak FS and an Intense Tracer. I like the Ventana more for what ridding I do so now I am selling the Intense. The Ventana is a 19" better for my height and the Intense is a med 17-18". Go used and get a made in the USA bike with good parts over a China made with who knows what kind of aluminum. There is a big difference in quality.

best part was kicking the crap out of the kids after they said they would dust me
their only excuse was... at least i can jump... my reply was 240#'s was not made to go in the air LOL

I bought her a nice Giant bike, KHS's are also nice too
i did take my Redline through some mountain bike trails, only problem was long crank arms, low ground clearance, meant i at some dirt, bark, and leaves.....

when we move to Yuma, i plan on biking to work :) or walking, either way, i want this wieght off me. too old to carry it around... dammmm Italian food here on long island LOL

No on the San Andreas...That is a porpoising DH machine for sure. I got rid of all the DH stuff after they closed Summit and ride a ti Dean x-country bike now...keeps me in good enough shape to get back to in-n-out every week.
Konas are great bikes, Ellsworths too.

*This is all opinion*

The San Andreas is a funny looking machine, and is a single pivot. The folks that love them, really love them. I couldn't get past the looks, and I'm not a real big fan of single pivot bikes, I personally don't like the way they pedal (lots of bob, even with a good aftermarket shock)

http://www.bikemagic.com/news/images/ib05_dna_sml.jpg

Go ride it. Then ride a few others that you're interested in. Get the one that you can't quit grinning when you get off of it, that's the right bike for you. Don't make your decision based upon your wallet. A bike that sits in your garage, is more wasted money than a more expensive bike that you ride the snot out of.

Bikes have poor resale value, you get your money out of bikes in fun.

For an all mountain, I personally like the way that the Santa Cruz Nomad rides. I love the VPP geometry, and it's a good size and weight for long pedals. I also really like the Specialized Enduro. They've spent years dialing in their design on this bike, and every year it rides a little nicer.

Tracers are exellent bikes. Bummer they stopped making them in 04.

May I suggest a couple of things?

1)Shop around, there are many good shops in your area that can probably get you on the right bike.
2)Make sure the bike fits. A crucial part of you enjoying your ride is making sure the bike is your size. If the bike shop is legit, they will not just point you in the direction of their "blowout" bike. They will take the time to ask you what kind of riding you do, what you plan on doing with the bike (what kind or riding), and they will make sure the bike fits perfectly...as in swapping stems, adjusting bars, adjusting the seat to the proper height, ect.
3)Make sure you get the right kind of bike. These days there are so many different purpose-built bikes...and not really many true "do-all" bikes (although some are damn close but cost $$).
4)The brand is typically not an issue, most well known brands will deliver similar quality build and design...with the larger (Specialized, Giant, Jamis, Iron Horse, ect.) tiwanese comapnies providing the best package. Trek and Cannondale also get nods for quality/value (USA made on their higher-end models). I've been in this game for awhile and ridden for many companies and I can tell you that the tiwanese frames are in most cases better quality/bulid/material/design than MOST "US made" frames/bikes.
5)In the price range that you are looking at, assuming you are looking at new bikes...I would recommend: Giant Trance, Cannondale prophet, Specialized Enduro, Jamis Dakar, Iron Horse MK, Trek fuel ex.

I ride Cannondale bikes myself...but thats because I signed a contract saying I would ;)

Can't go wrong with an Iron Horse MKIII. Great rear suspension design with the DW link. Don't really need any platform at all which makes the rear plush if you dial it out.

so i pulled the trigger!!! i went with a giant reign 2, i read some reviews and talked to a few different local bike shops and decided it was a good way to go. it is a 2006 model so it was over $1000 off and i stayed within my budget. now i just have to start riding again.

Good choice Ollie. I have my Foes and only rode Specialized in the past. A friend let me ride his Giant and I liked it so much I bought a VT frame and built it up. The linkage design on the Giant is super compliant without too much bob.

Sorry for chiming in so late on this. I live inPpark City and ride a lot, I had a Giant Trance 1, before some dirt bike swiped it, and loved it. It was a great all around XC bike. I ended up replacing it with a Yetti because I was too impatient for the local shop to get the new Giants in. The Yetti works great but the Trance was way more comfortable for my big azz. 6'1" and 235. You should be way stoked on the Giant. If anybody is in Northern Utah this year and wants to hit up Park City to moto or mtn. bike, let me know. That goes for skate and snowboard too.

Jordan has shown me a few places, so far ridden in O'Neil Park in RSM, The Fullerton Loop, and in Wood Canyon (screw Cholla lol). I try to ride on mondays and fridays when i'm off work.

I would like to ride anything that wont kill me on a hardtail. Trails local to me for mid week riding are bonelli, mills/marshall, chino, fullerton...I can do any of those during the week.

I bought a used Giant AC-1 recently so I could go out and get some exercise doing something I would look forward to, as opposed to staring at the wall on the elliptical machine. I've only done two short rides so far, I thought I was going to have a heart attack climbing the hills. I need to change the set up a little to make it more xc friendly.
I hope I will stick with it, I think it will be fun and good for me. This summer I'd like to go up to northstar or downieville and do some cheater downhill stuff (shuttling / chairlift).

Ollie, In my opinion a light mounted to your helmet is best. If you ride technical stuff at night you need to look where you want to go not necessarily straight in front of you. Also riding on off camber stuff with a bar mounted light freaks out my equilibrium but that might be just me. The only thing to remember with a helmet light is not to look at people when you talk to them. LOL

We could always set up a group for next years 24hrs of the Old Pueblo ride, it would take a lot of planning but it could be done.

Longest ride on the road for me was 100 miles. The thing that sucked, sort of, was I was alone, but I guess I had a good time.

They say the mileage in the dirt is as much as twice the mileage on the road. So 20 dirt miles is 40 road. I sold my roadie last year but have kinda wanted to get another but thing I would rather have a new mt bike first.

We're actually looking at both options- w/Lifts or just riding the fire roads, etc. What's the deal with them having so many regulations on bikes? Limiting travel/weight/etc? It used to be a good time up there, now I'm not so sure what you can even ride on(based on the map.)

WoodyW
August 28th, 2008, 11:52
Basically Summit got sued for negligence when a guy broke his neck during a race...because they had a course marker and he hit it as I understand it. Years later...if you have a double crown fork and too much travel AKA weight...you must be going too fast for them. Unless you buy beer.

Have any of you guys tried the Garmin GPS units? 205,305, etc.? They look like they could be useful, but haven't found anyone who uses them.

Offspring
August 28th, 2008, 17:24
I have a 305, and it works great even up in some of the deep canyons we ride in up here. It basically records your routes using satellites. The 305 isn't like the gps you use in the race cars where you watch your track as you drive it. It comes with an okay mapping software, but the ticket is to use motion-based mapping system that garmin also owns. You down load your ride, it collects the weather for that area for that day and it makes some corrections mostly to altitude, and it cleans up the gps readings. At motion-based it then allows you to overlay ride on google earth. Now the new versions are different, but I haven't really looked into them because mine works just fine, and I wont pay what those are going for. Never had a problem with mine. Go to mtbr.com and read up in the gps forum, good info there. my buddies that use wired systems always get more miles ridden and I think that is the function of the gps points, but like I said motion based cleans this up. Good luck.

Big Bear was great. If you guys are on the fence about heading up, I say to go for it. Garmin 305 is cool too. I downloaded some trails online to test the unit, and it's extremely accurate.

Have any of you guys ever looked into a helmet cam? The guy I was riding with decided to yard-sale it right in front of me. I wish I had it on video and am now a little interested in them.

Helmet Cams are awesome when riding in big groups. I did a trip to Brian Head Utah with a bunch of people and one guy in the group had a helmet cam. It was cool to go back and watch the ride on tv. I have to find out what he used. The video quality was great.

Buy used. there was a newer Santa Cruz blur that went for $600 on Craigslist. You'll get way more bike for your money.

Anybody here ride a 29'er? I want to get a single speed niner but I am looking to hear from some guys that ride them first, curious how they accelerate since we are pretty hilly over here. I might have to get a geared one if they feel too slow out of the hole.

I ride a SS 29'er. Gary Fisher Rig. They accelerate as fast as your legs make it accelerate. My climbs range from 800 ft to 2500 ft and my gearing is 32/18. I started out 32/22. I'm an animal on a bike. I plan on doing sart with it soon. Thats out your way so when we do it I will make sure you know about it. The 29" wheel is like adding 2 teeth to the rear sprocket in comparison to the 26" wheel.

I would stay away from eccentric bottom brackets. My next SS will be a kona or something copying konas rear drop out design.

Marshall Canyon was fun but I'm in terrible shape. A few more rides and hopefully I won't feel like death at the top of the hill. The downhill was fun but it'd be kickass if I was in better condition for the ride down... I got to watch Kritter do a 1-footer "off a sweet jump" - turns out it wasn't intentional. Kritter has I dunno how many pounds on me, only has 1 freakin' gear on his 29' and still manages to whoop my butt to the top.

And that wallpaper is nasty. It's bad enough in person, but man, it's really ugly in photos too.

I think I'm gonna run the SS. And good heads up on the BB.
Def. let me know ahead of time on SART since the trailhead is only about 20 min. from my house. I'm in for that ride, probably get a few other rdc guys from out here to jump in too. I'm gonna try to get up and ride the lowest part this weekend (below the post office). It's a little overgrown because not many come down that far but there are some really fun sections.

geez kritter, 260 makes me feel good at 220. You've got 40 lbs of lung and leg on me.
What size frame is your 29' I like my bikes a little tight, but I'm 6'2 220 and a large is usually a little tight.

Charged hard on the Sunset loop tonite with the boys. I love hearing the roadies talk about how gnar it is and we ride it in reverse (down the easy side and up the hardside) on the DH rigs with 3.0 and 2.7 tires. Got in some fun little chutes and ridges too. Got a donut and a coke too in town at the halfway. Anybody close to this end of the valley that wants to night ride...let me know, we're always up for more company. Must eat donuts with us afterwards though...no exceptions.

Havent posted in here before, but I just bought this bad little B---H today. Walked into jax in HB and it had been a return because the guy who bought it didnt get permission from his wife and had to return it, so i got it with zero rides on it for 1600.00, they normally run 2200.00. So I swooped on it, i used to ride alot in high school on an old giant with some OG marzocchi forx. This is to relieve the stress of the business during the week when I cant make it to the dezert and maybe shed a few pounds too while I am it. Its a HiFi Delux with fox floaters, juicy five hydro brakes and a genesis carbon fiber rear frame.

I rode a Spot single speed today, the one with the belt drive. The 29's were nice but I missed my gears and full suspension. It was a neat bike but I think if I went the 29" route I would get a full suspension 27 speed bike. I will say I was pretty sey on the next bike being a longer travel 26" but I would consider the 29'r route like mentioned above.

Really the belt didn't seem any different then a chain, just really smooth and quite, I don't know if it made a huge difference or not. I did go look at the new Gary Fischer 29'ers and I am going to demo one next weekend. The wheels made a HUGE difference in riding efficiency.

I demo'd the HiFI Deluxe 29'r from Gary Fisher this weekend and it was a really nice bike. The 29' wheels make a big difference for XC riding. It was a bit different going down hill but I think after some time you would not notice the difference. I really like it and would recommend it for someone ridding XC.

The 29'er in hard turns, technical obstacles, small drops, squqare hits has a lot more wheel flex side to side and on the fishers the front wheel is offset more so it gives a sensation of pushing. Takes some time to get used to. It could also be due to my size and the wheelset on my rig is fairly light.

As for the belt drive I wonder what the tensile strength is. I go thru chains faster then any other component on my bike. I put a new chain on for saturdays 12 mile race...its now 50% and I even geared down for the race. If I would have kept my normal gearing I probably would have used the chain up in 12 miles.

After missing my old Schwinn Rocket 88 (before they got bought out) for a few years, I finally decided to buy a new (to me) bike to hit the local trail. I picked up a Cannondale Jekyll 900 with some newer components for $500 off craigslist...which I would call a decent deal. It doesn't have the lefty fork, but the Head Shock it has was just rebuilt (known for blowing seals) so I'll probably leave it for awhile. Been really enjoying it and the lockout/disc brakes are enjoyed upgrades. Anyone who rides Whiting Ranch trail shoot me a PM and we can ride some time. I go Mon, Wed and Fri just before dawn (start off running a light but finish up with it off).

This Saturday! Death March!....SART from Hartbar to Yucaipa, and possibly across the Crafton Hills loop-if there are any survivors at that point. Last weekend I scouted a bunch of the lower (below the post office) sections and they haven't seen much action. I am prepared to give them action! No we aren't riding up from the bottom...but my DH rig feels like I'm pedaling it up even when we are going down so It'll be a wash. Lance T
October 22nd, 2008, 12:46
Shimano for clipless and Easton Flatboys and Kona Wah Wah's for my platforms. The egg beater are a real love or hate pedal. I would more recommend the Time pedals because they won't have problems getting clogged like a Shimano, work similar to a Crank Bros. pedal, and I have never had a customer have problems or dislike a Time.

Not sure if the make was mentioned, as I did not read the many previous pages but...

...u cannot go wrong with a Turner. Great quality and a rockin good time. We'll ride from town up Gibraltar, down the other side, down canyon, then back up near San Marcos Pass, and drop Painted Cave road back into town. About 46mi with 6k vert. My Turner Burner has never left me stranded!

Ollie I run the greatest pedals ever made on my DH bike...Primo platforms. On the hardtail I'm running old GT platforms but will def run a clipped pedal on the new SS. I was a BMX guy first so I have had a thing for the flats for a long time.

Turner is an awesome bike. The '09 DHR is gnarly.

Gummi Bear
October 23rd, 2008, 14:07
I switch back and forth between flats and SPD's.

Sun Ringle ZuZu's for flats and Shimano 636's for SPD's.

I really liked the AtomLab Aircorp pedals I had before, as well as the Trailpimps. Super smooth, very thin profile made for a lot of control, especially on a park or trials bike.

I have had tons of SPD's - Ritchey, Time, Eggbeaters, Shimano, Specialized, and some others. They're very personal, and everyone has features that they're looking for. Try out several at your local shop, and see what you like.

JBO
October 26th, 2008, 22:47
the crank bros. MALLET pedals are a good compromise....clipless, but still have a platform....you can ride your bike around with regular shoes, or un-clip before a section where you think you are gonna need to put your feet down.

Death March took it's toll. Lost 1 guy a quarter of a mile in when he broke the bottom bracket spindle on MY loaner Dean Ti hardtail. He hiked out. Mexi "jumped" off the bike a couple of times in the next 2-3 miles...was attacked by a crazed squirrel that was pissed he was on his trail, and later cramped in a high speed, high altitude corner causing him to exit the singletrack and cling to a vertical face roughly 100 below. He climbed out slowly. Other guy TORE up a stanchion on a brand new 888rc cup fork, and shortly after smoked a front brake line when the fitting came apart. Front of his bike was junk.

Oh, and Blake and I had smoke inhalation (BAD in my case) because as we were loading the last bikes up some kids lit off a ravine by Mikes place. Guess who sprung into action to cut line around it and keep water on the flames...that's right. Never shoveled so fast in my life. Whole bike crew doubles as fire fighting team. Loaded up and went riding afterwards, I just couldn't breathe for 10 mi or so.

I have wanted to buy a new bike for some time but I keep telling myself that I will wait until I start riding a lot, which I still have yet to do. I did decide to fix up the old Superlight a bit with a new XT derailure, a new Fox rear shock with Pro Pedal, some new Geax Sturdy tires and an XTR cable set. The bike was working ok but kinda tired so now it should be good to go for another 4 years :)

Bill contact me if you have any questions. I have done several 24 hr races and will do many more 12-24 hrs races this summer. My business partner has done moab 7 times. I may race it this year I just dont like all the hype moab gets so I have not raced there yet.

Good to meet both of you guys! Thanks for the ice cold TKT after my deathmarch! Stoked with 3rd since that was the first XC race I've raced in about 15 yrs or so. Riding the singlespeed was brutal on that course! Both guys that beat me had gears....that's what I'm attributing them beating me to... ;)

Sagebrush Safari Race report- Well I got 2nd in Cat 2 clydes behind the same dude that beat me last week. I lost by 8 minutes which isn't so bad considering he rode a geared Specialized Epic and I rode my Single. He also is a dead ringer for Dolph Lungren and has about 2% body fat. Felt pretty good about it, but am a little bummed because I never saw him until the finish line...he did the stealth breakaway and I never knew to catch him. The course had super fast insane flowy singletrack probably 1/3 of the course...it was fun to ride and I made up alot of time there. I'll catch Dolph at Sea Otter.

That's about the height difference too Kritter! You and Skyler would dig the course for sure...next year.
Smoked a chain...2 races and it's done. Smoked my new seat too...bent the rails 1st race out. Tire lasted 2 races. Bottom Bracket is wasted. Being a clyde ain't cheap.

Hey Skyler...I missed Santa Ynez this weekend because of circumstances but I heard from my cousin it was windy as crap anyways. I'm gonna race the Spring Challenge in Idy. this weekend, and next weekend there is a racers and chasers xc race at Vail Lake in Temecula- planning on that too. Then I go to Co. springs for the Kenda cup finals, and a showdown with Dolph Lungren. (He won Santa Ynez). I have been putting down a lot of miles lately...I want to beat that guy bad.
