Is anyone going? I haven't really heard too much talk about it around this site. Will there be any "do-not-miss" displays there this weekend? Was thinking of going - anything off road can't be bad...:D

I didn't go cause I'm working my ars off doing taxes..PLEASE do not call me about taxes....unless I know you or you are a fabricator or parts guy and will help me with my future 1 car. (I'm a little nuts rights now, sorry)

I hope this 2 shows a year BS doesnt ruin the expo in october. I think it was a real stupid idea. The only people making money with all these shows are the people putting the shows on. People paying to go to this show are going to be disapointed and not come in october thinking its going to be same crappy show.

I hope I dont have to say Advanstar ruined it for me...

That is an awesome little truck. I spoke to them at the Oct Off Road Expo and they seemed very cool. Are they still building them for shortcourse with 31's? Or have they started to look at mini-metal?

Agreed, and agreed. 4wheel parts is pulling the same bs.

Fewer better shows works much better for the vendors and the customers.

I know my situation is not what they base their dates on. But there are some of us,(like me) that come from out of state, and make a whole WEEKEND out of going to the EXPO. When I heard there was going to be TWO, I though it was a bad idea.

I think I would compare it to having two Baja 1000's in a year

I like the 2 show idea but, they definitely need to change the way they do it in order to make it work. You all know that we like looking at all the new parts and cars/trucks in there different phases of work. That’s why there are so many “prerunner meets” try to get together. That’s why contingencies is so popular or what ever method you look at what others are doing.
The way I see it the 2 off road expo Idea as it is now will and should not work because it is “to high price”. It’s the “sema” of off road. If they make some changes to the off road expo (lower the price** or leave the fall show alone and make another show some other time in the year with a different name and with a different type of marketing {less expensive for venders and attendees**, it could work. Some ideas for the second show {besides price** I would like to see would be more trucks on displayed. More projects, new ideas, show prototypes and get feed back. Companies getting to know there clients needs more. I guess I would make it more of a car show/product show. Something like the Pomona swap meet thing added in. the main thing is for the second show to succeed is to lower the price for venders and allow more public involvement. How many people go the expo and spend just as much time in the parking lot then in the expo.
What would you do??

I hope I dont have to say Advanstar ruined it for me...

It is a first year show, that's for sure. They say they have the same number of vendors the very first October Expo 8 years ago at this one. (90 vendors) They say there are 400+ at the October show so I hope those who attend this weekend don't think it will be like this in October and not come back.

I don't know if Advanstar has ruined it for me yet, but I sure do miss Guy and Bob. I know Advanstar is a big company and should have lots of trade show experience, but it seems like the small time guys do a better job. (ORBA, Extreme Motorsports, Sand Sports Super Show, AZ Expo, etc.)

There are too many shows as it is and everyone wants to make more $$, so they put on more shows. I think it's reducing the quality and size of the shows when this happens... It's not good for the industry when companies start losing money from trying to go to 15 small/medium shows instead of 5-7 quality shows a year.

With family, work, races, vacation and other weekend tie-ups, how many of you have enough time in the month to go to a trade show once a month for 4-5 hours? I would think every OTHER month is just fine, if even that!!!

thanks for dinner!

I think the offroad expo in october, sema in november and a sand show around this time of year is all the offroad world needs...3 shows a year that would generate piles of money for everybody but the consumer who is in awe of the amount of vendors, shwag, and cool ish that he blows a ton of money on beer food and parts he doesnt need.

Honestly, it makes the most sense because it's the beginning of the season. I wouldn't mind seeing ONE show at the end of the season or a mid summer wake up show. I really like the ORBA show and the support it gives our industry and everyone involved in the show are great to deal with. February seems to be a good time of year for the show too. (good to get down to San Diego too!)

Well today is much better, lots of attendees. The good thing about more people is it slows down the foot traffic so it takes longer to walk through the hall!! :)

The Toyota Motosphere is pretty cool, lots of people checking that out right now and making lots of noise!

There were very few people last night, making it easy to walk through super quick. I was pretty worried today would be bad too, but it has been great today and we acutally made some sales, a LOT more attendees then I expected! I heard lots of radio ads and they have been blasting out quite a few emails too, they did some good!

Went earlier today. It sucked. One hall. That's it. Pfluegers truck was the only real trophy truck there. I walked the whole place in 20 minutes. I want my money back.
I could have slept in and thouroughly enjoyed my hangover.

The only redeeming part of the day was lunch at Hooters in Anahiem. I spent more time there than at the "show".

So not worth it.

Yea I went to the good guys show at del mar insted. You could see the impact there too. Ford Racing usually has a Semi there and they were a no show, a lot of smaller vendors seemed not to be there either.
Hot Rods up the wazoo as it should be, lots more with For Sale signs too. Some of the original asking prices marked down the one 32 ford was 40k then 35k now its make an offer. Funny how people will not buy a new .98 sign.

I hope they go back to one Expo a year. Now is not the time to expand, elections, economy, fuel prices and people with out the house they refied 2 years ago to buy there new toy.

Have him tell management to pull their head out. Economy is slow, business is slow, disposable income is slow...with that said its no time to put on an extra show costing businesses money to display and consumers money to attend. All they are doing is ruining the prestige of the offroad expo name which Guy built and they can do since they bought it from Guy. Guy made the name and show the best off road show there was, similar to th score show back in the day but better...the show is slowly losing momentum and this exploitation of the name "offroad expo" to lure in consumers and businesses not in the know is why they(advanstar) are ruining it.

I think we should thank the guys at Advanstar/Dirtsports for helping/making our sport grow. I agree that the timing is off for this show as there are not that many booths/displays. The reason why timing is off is because the industry had a show called off-Road Impact just a few months ago. It is very hard and expensive for us to do all these shows as well as attend races and do day to day business. I will say that the October show is by far the best off-road show going and at the same time of year there is an almost as good of a show for the sand crowd called Sand Sports Super show. Then there are all these little shows that pop up from time to time. I fell that if there was not the other smaller off-road shows this months Off-Road Expo would be a huge success. I also feel that if the Off-Road Impact show was part of the Off-Road Expo twice a year then the two Off-Road Expo's would be a huge success. We would have two consumer shows at the same show on Friday twice a year industry shows called Off-Road impact. Camburg would support these two shows for sure and I feel the sport / industry would be able to grow at a steady pace comfortable for all. I also feel that with these two shows put on by Advanstar the manufactures and shops would support them before the other shows making the Off-Road Expo/Off-Road impact the best shows going by far! They have the space, resources and the best staff going in the business. They also have the best magazine for Off-Road Motorsports!
Lets be constructive... What could you guys come up with to make this better? Give them some ideas, I am sure they are listening.

Value for the 20 something dollars spent for parking and entry...

It's hard to swallow spending that money for one buildings worth of stuff, and let's not mention the cost of gas to get there!

I don't get it? What does 4 Wheel Parts have to do with the Off Road Expo?

Nothing directly except they keep having more and more trade shows. They have learned that they are big enough to leverage vendors into attending multiple trade show with fairly high registration prices. It is an income stream for the promoter, but they are becoming so frequent that the return on investment is diminishing for the vendors.

4Wheel Parts and Advanstar did put Off Road Impact together this year and it too was not a great show.

I little feedback from my buddy:
I forwarded him a link to this thread so lets keep it positive.
The second show came up based on a survey taken at last falls show. People wanted a second show..I think and he thinks the timing was off just a bit. As with any new thing let them work out the bugs.. yeah he agrees on the parking thig as well. Maybe they can arrange a parking pass type package with pre-purchase of tickets for the next show.

Wow, I read this thread on Saturday and figured I would go with my pops and check it out, just to go. I wasn't expecting much, but that's what is was. Not much at all! Actually, it sucked!!!! The best thing about the expo, was the discount fee's for the NHRA (Wally Parks) Museum. The museum actually had race cars in it.

This off road expo, by no means portrayed anything at all of an offroad experience. I still can't believe how much cr@p was there. More rhino stuff than anything. I have been to some car shows that have better representation that what was there at the off road expo.

I just hope, the fall show far exceeds my expectations!

I feel the same way Jerry; combine the ORI and the Expo together. Have the ORI show do it's stuff on Thurs/Fri and then the Expo on Sat/Sun. Thurs. they could do their seminars, Friday the vendors and wholesalers do their business and Sat/Sun, it's time for fun with the public. Easier on the vendors, one show and more customers both wholesale and retail. Good for the attendees, they see more booths and get to spend their hard earned $$.

I attended the ORI show last month, but couldn't justify doing the spring Expo so soon afterward. The ORI is a good show for vendors and wholesalers to get together to discuss business and I did that both for my small business and for the 1 magazine I write for AND did it all the first day. The second day was a repeat and we pretty much just walked around saying hi to all the same people we said hi to the day before.

Maybe another solution would be to do the spring expo somewhere else (besides the Expo in SLC at the end of this month). PHX would be a good place for the spring Expo. Not too hot yet and there is plenty of off roading, dunning and racing going on in AZ. Though this solution wouldn't help the ORI show.

I emailed the heads of the show a few years ago and never even received a reply. I suggested they do an off-road film festival. With as many new desert racing flicks that are being made each year (not as many as a few years ago though), that might be something else that off road expo can offer for their spring show.

That is a great idea!! Some type of racing(trophy karts / trophy lites) with a judged Truck/ Buggy car show & a build off contest for the fabricators, with prizes would be cool also, maybe some bands for the evening crowd and of course a "Miss Off-Road Expo" contest would bring some people out. They need something totally different then the October show or impact to make it work. Oh ya, some vendors, food & beer.

I agree they need to spice it up a bit. Last weekends show really sucked, if it wasn't for the free parking I would've really been pissed. Hope the "BIG SHOW" in oct. is better. It seems like the last two years the show was the same weekend as a BITD race, so there were'nt any big teams there. Hope they get it together.

A 3 day build of a prerunner, crawler or buggy. Nothing way over the top but something that would have the abiltiy to be built/modified during show hours. Have it finish an hour or so before the show ends and have all people over 18 who purchased a ticket entered to win it. If you go three days your entered 3 times. You need to have more than one entry per person to get people to the show for two or three days. Also maybe tickets for 5 bones. You need vendors to kick down and maybe have a show produced around the build. Now where to air it.....?
OK hows this, Get the Fab School in on it, they have the tools and bodys to build the rig. Get some of the magazines in on it too. Dirt Sports, Off Road, Crawl or who ever. Build something unassuming, used vehicle or simple kit. No bling, maybe shinny wheels
