Today we just strolled around and went to a Volkswagen shakedown test. Unfortunately we lost the convoy in the woods and where unable to see any action.
However we met up with our resident rdc member Mark Miller and long time friend Dirk VonZitzewitz and chatted for a brief moment.

Budapest is easily one of my favorite cities in Europe. Was the VW team trying to lose you on purpose?

I think it was a case of poor communication on our part. We showed up at a local business they use for staging. We assumed it was something like the RGM or Mitsubishi testing session. We assumed wrong maybe? So they all took of in a convoy. 5 Touaregs and a T4 and various other support vehicles. We followed them what seemed forever. The race cars up front got away from everybody. Even the VW staff was confused on where they went and went in circles. Then they all headed back and we just followed. Ohh well. I don't think they tried to ditch us.

Whats nice now is that the entire town has a race vibe similar to San Felipe or Ensenada on race weekends. There are race cars parked at various hotels all over town.

Tomorrow is tech inspection. Lets see what that will be like. We went today to that area to check it out and seemed very restricted and fenced of.

On a more negative note Europeans seem rather serious and up tight when it comes to rules and adding fun into the event. Coming from a north American desert racing background it seems rather serious. For example it looked like the souvenir are 100% controlled by ASO and there where two total t-shirt stands with a limited selection to pick from. In Baja there are 20+ vendors with countless designs. The actual inspection area is fenced off and secured with guards. Maybe too early to make a judgment call on that...will get more into that later.
