TT's Text From Media Centre, Veszprem, Hungarn.
Wellllll .. with Robby not in the running for the OA the crowd still expected an "RG Show" ... and they were not to be denied. Although the event crown was to being decided between Stephan Peterhansel (Mitsubishi .. yawn .. what's new) and Carlos Sainz' VW ... it was 22 seconds at the morning's start ... the real show was Bobby "BJ" Baldwin and Robby. With BJ starting in the top five ... two minute intervals ... they ahd the crod in the palm of their respective hands.
The first stage --- SS6A ... was a reverse repeat of the previous morning's run ... 150-some km in length ... long enough to gather in the group and keep everyone honest. The "Ojos" rollers suited the H3s, yes. BJ took to the air and showed 'em how it should be done. The little factory cars are quick .. blah, blah ... do I have to repeat this litany? OK, no more. They ARE cute little suckers but I would not want my friends to see me in one thru Calamajue Wash!
BJ got the front end up 3-4-5 feet.
Both of the southwest stars looked on top of their game and had it in spades. Mister Gordon, in particular, did a Baja move when he plowed a soft, downhill, off-camber berm and did the right things: never lifted and went straight ... through some giggle weeds, some grass hummocks, past a cameraman r two, and off a three-foot embankment. A stunt not often scene on Veszprem.
They'll be rerunning THAT clip on HSPN ... Hugaro Sporty Network, ja. Killer stuff. As they used to say in the top fueler ranks: "If you can't win at least let 'em know you were in town."
Robby "Monster" gear will be a big seller this Xmas in Veszprem! Even more so than Soviet military surplus camo clothing. We tried to pretend that we were part of the team! At least we spoke English.
A little Class 3-ish high-CG car became confused o a series of L-R-L switcheroos and went of the road and onto its side. A badly bruised ego was the assessment.
TRUCK TECH
OK, SOME pepple like Deisels, OK? The scoop is that the heavier trucks ... the 9,000 kilos ... use the brakes so bad on the twisty turny downhills that the heat eats up the seals and the oil leaks out onto the brakes making for an environmental catastrophy.
SS6B
The afternoon stage -- SSB6 -- was all RG. Carving the damp dirts, scattering the deer ... winning the stage over Sainz by 00.01 ... the word on the press room is that an official tripped in front of RG who then felt that it was appropriate to stop for ai spell to save a life. Otherwise the results woulda been by an even greater margin.
Boyd has a sequence where Robby is only ONLY the LR wheel. Photos not available, sorry. Jahahahahaaha. A cruel joke ... but watch for the photos in a magazine near you.
SHOCKING SHOCKS
The 135 kph endo yard sale of De Villier's VW the day before was nothing more (?!) than the result of an uncontrolled rebound. Over and over and over. Pitch-poled. The cage WAS OK but ... one more VW bites the dust-a.
BJ was 4th on the Stage ... looked good.

Real results can be obtained somewhere else. I ain't typing that stuff in. OUR interest is that the H3s are killin' the fans. Once again "awesome" is most-apt. Even the most jaded fan yells and screams and squeals. We dig the squeals. Like a pig.
LOCAL CULTURE
Oh, after 22:00 hours the hotel TV shows 110% "hard"-core porn.
Not that we watched it, of course. More of a sociological field trip.
FIELD FIX
We gleeped a piece of Commie rebar and Klaus straightened out the pushed-up lower suspension brace that was contacting the exhaust, causing a buzz at 6,300 rpm. Please do not post to EuroCar, thank you.
One more day ...
