Pulitzer Prize winning author David McCullough has a suggestion for what young people can do for thier country.
"please do what you can to cure the verbal virus that seems increasingly rampant among your generation", he told Boston College's class of 2008 at commencment ceremonies Monday.
He said he is particularly troubled by the "relentless" worrisome use of words, such as like, awesome, and actually.
"just imagine if in his inaugural address John F. Kennedy had said,
'ask not what your country can, you know, do for you, but what you can, like, do for your country actually.' "
Graduates apparently thought his speech was, like, awesome!
They gave him a standing ovation.
Mix this in with all of the OMG, LOL, BFF, IDK and other text/internet slang....imagine what listening to a conversation 20 years from now is going to sound like....

Do you have your caps lock on? I think this site has a tool that capitlizes the first letter of each word if you type in all caps...if not, it must take awhile to capitalize the first letter of each word in your posts. (just a helpful hint, don't take it the wrong way)

Reading on this forum from time to time I see the basic words used incorrectly, such as there-their, backwards. The thing that get me is the "phonic" way which some people write. I though that the whole "hooked on phonics" generation were supposed to be smarter than us older people. Our culture pollutes the education of our kids as well with marketing, i.e. Fox Shox. And further when someone debates using the total lack of intellegence and comes off trying to be an intellect it is rather troublesome to me. There is also a large portion of our society that somehow thinks that because they have a B.A. that they are intellectual superior and the two are not mutually exclusive.
Fact is that if you can't articulate your point and your next action is to raise your voice or get angry, you probably peaked with respect to you intellegence.
Oh... and... I don't mean to offend. Which is another thing that bothers me, the fact that it seems that we have to appologise for having an opinion either in anvance or in retrospect. Which is another sign that points to ignorance and is unconstitutional. And by ignorance I means the Websters definition, not the ignoranat definition that some people believe means stupid.
People... see the way that everything points in a circle. It all boils down to the fact that you need to have a good level of understanding of the english language to function in this country, which explains why it is so hard for a lot of people. Infidel is more articulate then a lot on here, I assume that Tunalgullia is south of the border?? And by that (if true) I assume that english is your second language?? If not I appologise for my ignorance(LOL!)

Yes sir, I am a Mexican Citizen. English is not my mother tongue. I learned it in school and by living oversees. I don’t know if that excuses me , but I really try to be as fluent in it as I am in Spanish.
I find myself constantly putting my sentences in a "Spanish like" grammar….
In any rate, I am much better in a conversation than writing it. :)

AWESOME is an AWESOME word to describe something AWESOME. There is no synonym.
I am not entirely sure and will have to check my books but I believe that the actual definition of AWESOME is "a large group of midgets". If it is not then it should be.
Picture a large group of the little guys and try to find a one word way of describing them. AWESOME is the only word I can think of.
"Did you see that awesome of midgets?"
"No. How many were there?"
"I couldn't tell bet there were a bunch"
"AWESOME!!!"
And for the record if it wasn't for the spell check feature on Firefox all my posts would have misspelled words in them.

Its called Neologism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neologism) and is perfectly valid although unappreciated by the ridgid and sometimes difficult rules of english. To many years proofreading documents has made me bitter.
I purposely named my cat "shrimps" and say "Shrimps's toy" etc. just to give the perverbial middle finger to english rules. Reserve your new word on Urbandictionary.com now! Mine is "croners", born of a funny story. Enjoy!
PS text language is lame BTW.

i think the use of slang will differ geographically[sp?]. it was earlier mentioned by one of our members that he did'nt care for the use of the term "prolly" but if you're from the south, that's exactly how it sounds. to shorten the word probably to prolly does'nt bother me one bit. the point is made. and i get it. mis-spelled words don't bother me either as long as i understand the point being made. especially on forums like this one. people will have different backgrounds and different levels of education. if we spend too much time in our own minds correcting every little mis-spelled word or use of a phrase that is'nt in line with the way we think it outta [theres another one for the purists] be without trying to understand what the intended message represents then i think we might think a bit to much of ourselves. i,ve got lousy computer skills and i type in "prolly" cause, whoops, i mean because, it's just plain easier for me to do it that way. if the use of the term "prolly" does'nt suffice as a shortcut for "probably" then i need to assure the critic that my english teachers did their job well and i do know better. but if my use of that term really bugs him to the extent of missing the point being made, he should prolly concern himself with some of the more serious and pressing aspects of what's going on in his life. there ain't nuthin' wrong a lot of times spellin' words the way they sound as long as the point gets thru.
