Take some photos and post them, I know a couple old surfer dudes that should be able to give you the skinny on the board.

here it is, its 7 foot and says Bill Stonebraker on it. I researched him a little and it says he is a church going man that shaped boards way back in the day. i would like to know how old it is or how to find out when it was shaped.

BGRANT

Look on the stringer down near the skeg. Most shapers will sign and date along the stringer on the foam. Sometimes they will put who it was shaped for. Kind of depends of how old it is.

Looks to be late 70s to early 80s. The lighteng bolt was big back then especially when MR (Mark Richards) was world champ.

It looks like Stonebraker progressed from shaping from home (Island Surfboard Repair) to shaping for Jerry Lopez and Jack Shipley's "Lighting Bolt" shaping brand. He shaped and glassed for them in the beginnig of the company until the mid to late 70's. These lightning bolts were VERY famous boards, ridden by Lopez and many of the top North Shore riders of the 70's.

I google searched "Bill Stonebraker surfboards" and found a 7'8" that sold for $1100 at auction. Your board is worth some coin, don't surf it in crowds. Better yet, if you're still learning, put it on the shelf until you're good enough to not damage it.

Cool stick!

Thank you guys so much for the help, I have surfed it a couple times and only in white wash size waves nothing big at all. I was at the beach a whlie back and i older man offered me a grand for it on the spot. he said he would go to and atm and get cash, i told him no becouse i knew i would see it some were for double and be upset with myself. I have tryed to get intouch with bill but no such luck.

Don't store it in direct sunlight it will yellow the foam and detract from the value. I wish I had all my old boards from the 70's and 80's including an airbrushed Zephyr stinger that was shaped by Jeff Ho. I noticed when McGrath was interviewed about the Cenni wall ride he called it an "off the lip". Does He surf?

SEANY
May 26th, 2008, 19:43
Yea!! I remember in one of the steel roots videos he went surfing and wasnt to bad, also when they would do that surfercross thing he was always one of the better motocrossers at surfing if that makes any sense.

I store it in my bed room, its kinda the center peice of the room.

Stonebraker I believe was the original ghost shaper of the lighting bolt. The bolt on your board is not the logo. Lighting bolt surfboards copied right the logo. You do have a potential keeper like pappawheely saids keep it out of the sun and in a cool dry place. I suggest you don't ride it. In the twenty years I've been manufacturing surfboards I have not come across one of those boards.

I wish I had more time to go to garage sales. A couple years ago I bought a 6'4" Bruce Jones single fin swallowtail for $5.00.

Never buy a surfboard from a garage sale. Could be stolen. I had a friend who bought a surfboard from a garage sale then sold it on ebay. The next thing cops were knocking on his door. The board was stolen. He was arrested but released when He showed the cops the house where he bought it from.

i'm curious about old surfboard companies. back when i surfed almost everyday, the best known outfits were the likes of gordon-smith, dewey weber , hobie, brewer, hansen, noll, surfboards hawaii, challenger. and olympic to name a few. there was a company in mission beach owned by tony and chris ursich [sp]. first named channin-diffenderfer later shortened to channin surfboards. anyone know what became of some of these guys. i know about hobie alter's co. and noll. not so much about some of the others.

They just wanted to get rid of it. I don't think you can never buy a board at a garage sale just because there was a stolen board at one time. Are you from the perfect world society? LOL

When I was surfing in the 70's and 80's we rode what was offered at our local shops but lots of stuff would show up on the used racks where I got most of my boards. I once had a Brewer thruster one of the first multi-finned boards. It had a fin in the middle and a long blade on both sides with channels in between. I mostly rode Russell boards and then Carl Hayward. Does anyone remember the animal tracks eggs?

Nice find!.....My father worked for Surfboards Hawaii and Hanson Surfboards back in the day. Surfing has been a big part of my families lives. Being a competitive surfer
(late 80s early 90s) was an awsome time of my life. I can remember back to Wind and Sea and Big Rock durring big swells and seeing Lighting Bolt mini guns in the line up!

My first board was 10'-4" Vardeman...I rode that thing all through Jr. High and just about everyone I knew laughed at me. The last time I was in OC I swung by a BDay party for an old surf rat friend of mine. There were a bunch of the old gang there and the same question kept coming up...."what ever happened to your old board?"
It went to the same place I got it from 30 years earlier....the Goodwill.

I've seen a couple of "Big Fellas" over the past 25 years.

At Trestles (North San Diego county) The state lifeguards have seen Whites in the
line up for years.

A woman went missing off of sunset cliff durring a night swim. Thought to be a shark
but never proven. (She was never found) circa 2000?

I've seen very large shadows crusin the line up at "Blacks" a couple times. (From cliffs)

I saw three seals just make it to the harbor buoy! (heading out of Oceanside)
Very large splash. Didn't see what made it? Pops says, "he saw a tail?"

We saw 15+ footer while fishing off Catilina! (Half the length of fathers 30' boat!)

Caught a 6' Mako in Mission Bay! Spring of 1984 (Sea World Marina) 14 years old!

Have had that "Sharky" feeling a couple times over the years durring dawn patrols
and glass offs. Thought I saw a shawdow under me once at "Bird Rock" one early morning!(Got so Creeped out!)

I know they've been there the whole time. I just try to not think about it!

Yes, I planning on surfing tomorrow!......lol

I think everybody has seen a shadow or two at blacks. One of the scariest places Ive surfed is Sunset Cliffs. My dad used to love surfing there and he would drag me out with him. I spent most of my teenage years surfing in the La Jolla reefs (big rock, hospitals, horse shoes, ect. Most of these spots were pretty shallow and the most you saw there was a seal or a jagged rock when it sucked dry.

You know your a surfer when?
#1 You show up to 2nd period with wet trunks.

#2 You get nasal drain half way through 3rd period.

#3 The knots on your knees have nick names.

#4 You understand hydrodyamics, can tell your buddy your regular board dimentions,
and why he needs to add volume to his boards, but can't ballance a check book.

#5 You have a flip-flop tan line all year long.

#6 Your haft to find substitutes for the word "dude". Such as officer and sir.

#7 You amaze your race team by accessing the Baja 1000 race course. Using no maps
or gps in the middle of the night. Making Your pit with time to spare. When asked
how? You answer "Oh I surf here!"....

I surfed in Hawaii for a few years, not the big waves but just recreationaly. I surfed on the east side of the island at Kaneohe Bay on the Marine Corps Base when I was in the Navy. You would be riding a wave and then all of the sudden see a hammer head on the wave with you just riding it. The younger ones loved to surf. The Tiger Sharks out there through, SCREW THEM!! Life guards used to blow the whistle all the time because of those people eaters. I used to always go with friends though because if I didn't then my mind would wander while waiting for the perfect set to come in, and I would start freaking myself out about sharks.

I used to stay with this girl in Mission. The speaker from the drive thru for the jack in the box on the corner by the rollercoaster would wake us up every morning.

Basically our alarm clock said "May I take your order please?" The snooze button was "Please pull up to the window"

I had some buddies that paddled from O'side North Jetty all the way around to DMJs. Very long paddle! My father-in-law is ex-military so we get a spot on the beach for the 5th wheel every summer at DMJs. We use to do it at Church's but the wife and kids like the beach better down south. I would way rather be at Church's to surf there and lowers any day. DMJs is not as good as it use to be. Anybody get shocked by the shower handle in the showers at DMJs? We always got the "new guy" with that one.

That paddle is brutal! Your right about DMJs. There are a few holes the sand needs to fill back in. A good southy and it should shift back to normal.
