Heres the release from RGM. Looks like a blank car this weekend, I hope this doesnt become common, seeing as how I think 13 races are listed as unsponsored on the RGM site. Any predictions? RG tends to run ok at Pocono, but usually has bad luck.
Robby Gordon Pocono 500 Preview
Before Robby Gordon heads to Pocono Raceway, he will make a pit stop at Eldora Speedway on Wednesday night for Tony Stewart’s fourth annual Prelude to the Dream, an all-star dirt race benefiting the Victory Junction Gang Camp's new Kansas City wing, the Tony Stewart Foundation, and other charities. Gordon will be driving a 2,300 lb dirt late model stock car prepped by Scott Bloomquist and sponsored by Jim Beam. Sunday’s Pocono 500 will mark Gordon’s fourth race in just over a week and his 13th start at the unique, three-turn triangular track.
For the first time this season, Robby Gordon Motorsports will be racing a “back in black” unsponsored race car. For sponsorship opportunities available for the top-35 team, contact the Business Development department at 704-949-1255 or bizdev@teamgordon.com.
TV and Radio Times – Qualifying is set for Friday, June 6th at 3:40 p.m. (ET) on SPEED TV, MRN, and Sirius. The 200 laps of racing action begins on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on TNT, MRN and Sirius Satellite radio.
Eldora – “I am really excited about this race,” Gordon stated. “We had a successful test session in Tennessee a few weeks ago, and I can’t wait to get back in the car at Eldora. Not only is this a fun event for our team, but it is supporting some great causes. I really appreciate Jim Beam and Scott Bloomquist for helping us to make this event happen.”
Dover – “Our team has really been showing improvement over the past few weeks, and I think we will continue the trend throughout the rest of the season. Pocono is a challenging track, but it is also fun once you can figure out what works best in the turns. Even though we didn’t get a chance to test due to Baja 500 commitments, I think we will be okay,” Gordon commented.

Not good. It's hard to get sponsors these days, just look at Yates.
And without testing there, they better have a good idea from GEM on where to start.

GEM was pretty fast there. As long as the setup is to RG's liking, they should be ok. GEM is being paid to handle marketing/sponsor issues for RG. If they can get coverage for Carpentier, then they should have no issue getting sponsorship for RG. THey need to get on it. I think John menard really put RG into a bad situation with pulling primary sponsorship for the IRL effort late.

Is that what happened? Or did the GEM deal upset John and just not make business sense since Menards is a sponsor with DEI? When it was just RGM, it was no big deal. But to sponsor DEI and a najor competitor like GEM might have not made business sense.
Im not saying Im right, just a thought though. It does irritate me if the money went to Ed Carpenters IRL effort, thats a waste of cash...

Menards was still a primary with RG when he was at Ford along with Paul at DEI, there was no issues then. He even tried to help RG with the buy out of Yates. If anything John Menard has been quoted as saying that RG trying to go it alone was not smart from a business standpoint. RG is no longer trying to go it alone so to speak. So I do not see that being an issue. I think DEI probably wanted more dough, and John really being an IRL man wanted to get back in.

What I think he's trying to say is, since Robby sought help elsewhere, John probably thought he would venture over to DEI and go back to Chevrolet. Instead, he went to GEM and Dodge.

Yeah, especially when that is probably what he is going to do with GEM anyways.....The excuse then was that he did not want to give up control with the Red Bull thing. Ah well, this is not the first time RG has had issues. I would think if GEM was serious about buying into RGM in some capacity, it would serve them just as much to have RG in every race and keep the 7 car in the top 35...So I am not to concerned. If they leave him to flounder financially, then we know that there is no immenent deal.

Did you guys see Jimmie's Power Rankings comment?
Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie should put on a good show at Eldora, but he'd be the odds-on favorite if Tony Stewart had gone along with his suggestion to add jumps and whoop-de-dos along the backstretch.
Jimmie would be the odds favorite if they added jumps and whoop-de-dos? When was the last time he even hit a "whoop-de-do" that wasn't in a golf cart?

I figure if Monster wanted to be in Nascar, they would be, thye have had many chances to step up. I figure they are a dirt company so to speak. They love the dirt and are well diversified from within the "Dirt" industry. Can not make them do what they do not want to do.

Yup, that's the impression I get too. I also get the impression that RGM doesn't want one-race sponsorship deals.
I'm hoping Carpentier will miss the race so maybe GEM will deck out RG's car with the 10 decals.

I talked to Monster Joe at Parker and it didn't seem like Nascar was going to become a regular thing- They have their budget and the bang for their buck with RGs off-road program is awesome... Think about it- Every full page ad from Toyo or anyother sponsor is free advertising for them- They pay to be on the truck/helmets/suits etc.... but the budget for Nascar (compared to RedBull) just ain't there.... maybe someday.

Absolutely- And from the sounds of it, JB was a last minute paint scheme as it was....
As much as I would love to see the big green M on the Cup car, maybe it's better they keep dumping $$$ into the off-road program if Hummer goes the way of the dinasour and that cash-cow dries up....

some different opinions on that - DEI thinks its better to put a logo on their hood when unsponsored, and Yates thinks its better to run blank cars.

Good point- I dunno about the RuR logo if that's good or bad... If you don't have a sponsor, make the car look as mean/menacing as you can....or, save the time on the fancy paint job and put some more time/money into qualifying/runnin up front- LOL!

Well, unfortunately it takes money from sponsorship to run well. In a down economy, the best sponsors are already taken up. Down sponsorhip=down performance. Look at the Yates cars, they have had some solid runs and are naked about half of the time.
There was a time when Kevin Lepage ran well:D

I do not know if I would call Larry Mac an idiot, he is a champion winning crew chief, but then again, Darrell Waltrip is an idiot and he won 3 championships
Ill recommend some good reading for you in regards to Nascar behind the scenes. Larry Macs "success" was due to others in the organization. Some of the best parts of the book talk about his time at the #26 King Racing Quaker State car, hilarious stuff.
I get you the name of the book when I find it.

Your kidding right?
And how do you know RGM went back to their own chassis? Just curious if you had any more info.
RGFan
June 8th, 2008, 13:53
No, he is not in it.....I heard the chassis thing from a friend a few weeks ago.....Then one of the engineers on RGM posted saying the same yesterday. They feel that RGM makes a quality chassis, just as good as GEM. I do not doubt their fabrication skills at all or the quality of the end product. But simple logic states that the more you run a particular chassis, the more info you can gather, which in theory should translate to better setups. RG needs to get on the GEM band wagon and get competetive. Once that is done, he can pick up another team, once they are competetive with two cars, and can become more independent, then consider running their own chassis. Just an opinion.....But isnt that one of the advantages of getting with a multi-car team in the first place. You would think after 4 years he would think that finishing in the bottom 20 is not good enough any more.

Sucks about the video game, but I still play Nascar 2003 by Papyrus; its still the best simulator.
RGM might make the highest quality chassis, but they seem to all lack one key ingredient; speed. Hopefully Sonoma will be good.

I know he wants to build something for the future, but why this way as an owner/driver. I think it has been proven time and time again that the driver/owner thing does not work, has not worked for the better part of 25 years with one exception. This is year 4 now, with sponsorship continuing to fall off, and performances similar to that of the first year. I guess what I am saying is that it just sucks watching him run around in circles finishing 20 and 30 something when he is capable of so much more as a driver.

Agreed. I think if he ever wins a race as an owner/driver, I will consider that a success for this 4 year ride.
It seems '06 was progress, and then the vision was lost. '07 came along with the COT, RGM seemed to be well behind in that catagory, and Greg Erwin took the fall for that. Its been down-hill ever since.
Things might have been different if Robby took the half buy-out option from Red Bull, because to me that team is good right now and on the rise. I think Robby could be doing more with those cars than Vickers or AJ, but thats if he decided to play nice. Chewing through crew chiefs, having childish arguements about who said what on the radio during the race, changing makes every year, and blaming bum motors has got to stop. Who knows if Red Bull would be where they are at right now if Robby was over there; they might be right where RGM is at currently. Unfortunately, thats Robby, and that truly is the reason he will never reach the level of a Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart. The talent is there, but the right mentality is not.
Oh well, thats what makes it fun.

I think the gopher cam is pretty cool.
I can't really put my finger on exactly what it is that makes Fox broadcasts so much better to me. It's Larry Mac's excitement I think...it just seems like they are more into it when it's on FOX. The ticker that shows their positions on FOX is also better than on TNT, (I can't see what lap they are on, all it says is OF 200) but maybe thats just my TV.
i think fox goes way over the line with all that boogity gopher crap. waltrip gives me hives. his insite is so .... 80's. hammond is ok but needs to get over himself. the new guys are'nt nearly as annoying. but donny. why am i so surprised that you like fox. did uncle o"reilly tell you fox's broadcast was better and to bag on the other telecast? yesssss master, as you say. boogity boogity boogity. gag me with a forklift. Also found this today,
MWR in trouble? been hearing that there might be trouble over at Michael Waltrip Racing. It seems that they are laying people off, telling them that it is because of financial issues. The team currently fields three Sprint Cup cars, the #00, the #44 and the #55, and one Nationwide Series car, the #99. This year Waltrip brought on a partner, Robert Kauffman, after suffering huge losses on renovations for his Cornelius, NC race shop and a bad 2007 season. Primary sponsor UPS is also pulling out of the team at the end of this season.(NASCAR Insiders, a site that claims to be two NASCAR insiders, including a crew member and journalist)(6-9-2008)

I guess POS went from 1 partnership car with BDR to 3 cars and a new manufacturer. His 1 car team wasn't competitive and he was hoping 3 would be? I think he relied too heavily on Toyota. After the cheating, they seemed to focus on other teams.
I would like to see Vickers give Toyota a win. He deserves it. I like him a lot more since he left Hendrick. Red Bull gives him a longer leash & he can show more personality.

I could be wrong but, I thought DEI started as the #1 car with Pennzoil. Then when Park got hurt they had a few temp drivers fill the seat. Then they started the #8 car for Jr as he had won a Busch championship and Dale Sr moved Jr to Cup. Then Sr built the #15 team with NAPA and he brought POS in to drive. During this time Truex won a Busch Championship and DEI found Bass Pro Shops and Truex moved to Cup. POS then left and took NAPA with him, DEI then took Menard and the Menard money and gave him the #15 ride.
Then last year DEI buys Ginn and desolves one team, moves points to the #15 team, and kept the #01 team making DEI a 4 car team.

DEI had the 1 car for a couple of years with Steve Park, it was previously the 14 car which RG drove for the first time. They did run a Busch effort with Jr during that time, but that was more of a partnership with RCR. In 2000, Jr and Park were teammates for 1 year with a part time 3rd Cup effort. Park made his rookie run in 98, with Jr in 2000...Park was injured in 2001 after Earnhardts death. POS went to DEI in 2001

Unfortunately most moments in Nascar (of pure brilliance in RG) are not aired on Television. Although we see it in Desert, Dakar and what ever else Robby gets his hands on, he still finds some way to jack it up if he has control. See, the reason he did so good in the Prelude to a dream, is he had no idea what he was doing and just drove the car. I don't see on why he can't see that. He is one if not the best wheel man in Nascrap, possibly in the world. Pay some money for a top crew chief (should have never let Irwin go) and let them do their job. But, that won't happen, if it does, I will be amazed, but could be possibly too late.
Nascrap really bothers me. Last night on the show (Nascar something) with POS and Bug Eyed Biffle was dumb! The only cool part was when they were talking to Casey Mears about the fun he and Jimmy have in their Tatum 4 seaters. I know it's a repeat but still cool. Biffle was talking about what he has and what not. That was the only good part of the show. Then there is POS talking about how awesome Pocono is too watch. That guy is HIGH!!! He really is in la, la land, simply amazing. Now that UPS is going elsewhere, Napa needs to fly. I simply can't believe POS get's that much air time.
Robby's marketing partners need to get to work.
