I know it makes me keep my head around me when winching and recovering other vehicles...

Very sad. But what a true class act from a true competitor.

Unfortunately Phillippe Tonin was also killed:
'Philippe Tonin was killed this morning after his KTM motorcycle was hit by the Kamaz truck of Vladimir Chagin.
The incident occurred at the 120km mark of the special stage between Qaratubak and Torgai. Medical teams arrived on the scene just moments after the crash and treated Tonin but to no avail. The body of the French rider was airlifted to hospital in Astana.
This worst possible news for the first-ever Transorientale was compounded with the announcement of the death of Chinese competitor, Xu Lang who succumbed to injuries suffered yesterday.
Lang had stopped to help another vehicle, which was stuck in the mud. The tow rope used for extracting the vehicle snapped and struck Lang fatally in the head. Suffering from a multitude of neurological problems, Xu Lang was transferred to hospital in Orenbourg, Russia.'
RIP gentlemen - always a sad day when a fellow competitor dies on an event... :(
